The saga continues… In the opening chapter of volume 2, Addy is sheriff of Leavenworth during “bloody Kansas” days. In chapter 7, he and Stogie operate a Pony Express station deep in the heart of lawless Nebraska territory. In chapter 8, after some unfortunate incidents, Addison heads east to finally deliver Pard’s gold to his wife in Cincinnati…when the Civil War breaks out. Addy’s western skills quickly lead him to take on the role of army scout, but those duties eventually cross over into outright spying for Ulysses Grant, as well as Grenville Dodge. In chapter 9, Addy barely escapes the clutches of the rebels and finds himself in a symbiotic relationship with a runaway slave and his son. Using Addy’s knowledge of geography and survival skills and the runaway’s connection to slaves on the plantations they pass through, they head north. Chapter 10 concludes explosively with Addison back on the plains working as a scout for Dodge on the transcontinental railroad but looking to finally conclude his personal feud with Black Wolf. The Brule Chief has removed to Powder River country to fight with Red Cloud and Addy follows him there. When you finish volume 2, if you love the book please consider not only writing a review but also posting a positive comment on Facebook or Tweeting your friends about it. I have been rejected by the New York publishing world dozens of times over a score of years. Help me sell a zillion downloads of Addy and thereby strike a blow at the Manhattan monolith while also sending them a if you don’t know what a good book is, the people will tell you.
My hearing is gone so I read a book every 2-3 days. It’s a long time since I read a book I enjoyed as much as the Addison True series. Craig Savoye has conjured up a rip roaring read with outstanding heroes, heroines, and villains that reach out and grab your heart or throat throughout the whole two books. I am saddened that the last page has passed my eyes. Just wish there was a continuation but that’s my selfishness showing. I know the book ends right where it has to. I enjoyed every hour from start to finish. If you are looking for a great read, start immediately on Addison True!
Five MORE stars for extra credit! It is a rare treat to read a story as well documented as is this in fictional/history. I was riveted. Having lived in the general area of the stories of the Indian wars (a very sad time in American history), the terrain, weather, and history were easily imagined. (BTW: Slavery and the need for the Civil War where hundreds of thousands died, is also a sad period of American History.) I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. The only comment in general is that it has a melancholy feel for humanity. We seem to be always fighting one another and that's sad, too.
In some respects these 2 volumes remind me a bit of “Little BigMan”. I don’t mean to compare them but to recognize that both recorded very unimaginable and heroic events. I certainly can’t speak to the veracity of the events of Addison True’s life, but it is an incredible story and a wonderful historical accounting of events that occurred during that time period in the U.S. and territories. I read a lot of books in many different genres, but I highly recommend this story as not only entertaining but but also educational on some levels.
There is nothing better than to say, I couldn't put this book down. What an authentic voice. I turned the page and it was over. I was stunned.. I wanted more. To the author, you were gifted with insight and feelings. I have never read a book about the civil war I enjoyed until this book. Not only did I enjoy it, but learned much. I don't know how to complement you more. Don't be discouraged by publishers. I can't get over how good it was.
Wow, long but a real easy read, once to recognize the type of talk they were using. This should be made into a multi episode made for TV movie. Hope he writes another one, where True takes the gold to Pard’s widow. Hopeful.
Wonderful long story of Addison True. Hunker down and snuggle up to an exciting story of gold rush, war between the states, railroad building Indian fighting along with love and death. Excellent story which I didn't want to end.
The story was great but the books were to long. Some of the descriptions of area and scenes cold have been shorter, I would have liked more about their lives together with Bo.
The saga of Addison True was so full of life, and love and sorrow and adventure that it took two books to tell it. I found myself immersed in the characters that I felt I was actually there. Excellent writing made for a fantastic reading experience.
