Second book I read in this series. First was Goya. This was a very interesting artist and the book really shined a multi faceted light on his life, work and influence.
The three stars for this book are an average. For the beginner, looking for a quick overview of the life of the German painter, this is a fine book, divided into bite-sized chunks and guiding the reader smoothly through his life and career. As such, it would merit four stars. For someone who already knows something of Schiele's life, or for the more serious art reader, however, the quick summaries may be of little use - no-one who knows much of Schiele will likely pick up much new from this work. For them, this book would rate two stars. Overall then, I'd say this is a good "Dummies guide to Schiele", for those who may have seen some of Schiele's art but know little of the man behind it or of the development of his style.
This book was informative to me, but if you've already read about Schiele, a lot of this material might be elementary to you.
I enjoyed that some of his juvenilia was included. Herein is a painting by 14 year-old Schiele which displays a talent for realism that any painter could be envious of.
