This book was amazing! Hard to put down and so fast paced. The story was full of twists and turns it was hard to keep up. I love things that mess with my mind and make me second guess. This book did that and more. The characters were believable and well written which was an added bonus. I am one happy reader.

**2.5 stars**

Mimicry by Margo Ervand. (2020).

**Thank you to the author for getting in contact and sending me a free copy of this novel, I am very appreciative**

Running away from her parents' home in Clio, Alabama, at the age of 15, Sarah seeks to gain not just freedom, but herself. But the past overtakes her when one day her worst enemy appears at her door. Each of them has her own truth, her own pain, her own goals. But who will be stronger? Who will win the right to become unique and irreplaceable?

I think this was an interesting storyline: twins that apparently hate each other to the point of wanting to ruin each other's lives basically. For me, I think different formatting would have helped me enjoy this one a bit more; it was a bit confusing in places and I think it would have helped if, for example, the chapters that took place in a previous time period were clearly labelled as such. At only just over 200 pages, this is a fast-paced intense read with a lot of twists and turns. I definitely liked Sarah more than Samantha, I felt like Sam was super aggressive and nasty with not a lot of explanation as to why she was like that.
I think the author had a solid foundation here with a good imagination, there's potential for a really great book from the author in the future.

Special thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Sarah has finally made it on her own. After leaving her home in Alabama at fifteen, she is finally living the life she dreamed of, with a career and a doting husband, and dreams of starting a family. However, one day, her sister Samantha shows up on her doorstep and chaos ensues. All of Sarah’s secrets are revealed, and Samantha is determined to take everything Sarah has, no matter the cost.

“Mimicry” by Margo Ervand is two stories in one; one story is narrated from Sarah’s perspective, and the other from Samantha’s (although we don’t always know who is narrating right away as Ervand purposely keeps some parts vague to increase the intrigue) , and eventually the stories converge towards the end.

Ervand has writing potential, to be sure. The writing style was well done, although I found some of the conversations and exclamations of the sisters’ to be juvenile and oddly-fitting (for example, a sister yelling out loud “damn it! What are you doing? I’m going to win this!” felt forced and awkward) but it was very definitive from page one that the sisters have a taut relationship at best. Both Sam and Sarah were equally likable and unlikable, and I had not made my mind up as to who I wanted to come out on top until the very end (and I was pleasantly happy with the ending) .

As the novel is told in alternating viewpoints, and it is not always labeled or identified who is speaking, the storyline can get very confusing. Sarah and Samantha’s constantly-changing roles and identities make this novel one that you have to pay close attention to in order to follow along. The flow of the plot was choppy in places, but it was a very unique novel that I can honestly say I have never read anything similar before.

The characters were intriguing (although the character of David was baffling to me. I don’t understand how he easily falls into bed with both sisters, sometimes within hours of each other. David was the only character who seemed completely unreadable to me) , and although I had no idea what to expect going into this novel (and the description itself was so vague) , I was pleased for a chance to read it and definitely think Ervand has potential as a writer.

This was an unique, mind-bending thriller that goes to some interesting places.

I was at times frustrated and awed by what Margo Ervand cooked up in her mind.

An stunningly written psychological thriller with a new look at the duality of twins.

You will find yourself questioning who is the good twin and who is the bad twin? In the end you are left with an uncanny situation and interesting premise for a book.

The perfect read for the spooky month.

I like my books to mess with my head and I’m obsessed with psychological thrillers and this one was fire !!!!!
Margo Ervand is an evil genius !!!!
This is a twisted story of twin sisters!
One is loved by her father and hated by her mother - the other is loved by her mother but hated by her father !!! I mean what more do you need !!!
When one decides to leave the family home and take on the identity of the sister left behind- things really amp up !!!!
Wanting to remain hidden - imagine her surprise when she comes home only to find her sister sitting with her husband !!!
Try to stay hidden as you may - you are not invisible !!
What follows is incredible ! Hate, family secrets and deceit to the max !!!!!
There is also the subject of miscarriages that is dealt with with sensitivity!
You might think that twins have a special connection but trust me - there is zero love lost between these two sisters !
The depth to which they will go through to make the other suffer is unbelievable!
I couldn’t put this one down and couldn’t believe what I was reading !!!
If you want I have your mind blown and love psychological thrillers—- get this book ASAP
You can thank me later !
Huge thank you to the author for sending me a digital copy !!!

Sarah has been trying to make a way for herself in the world since she was fifteen. Now, in her twenties, she is faking her way through a job at a New York magazine. When she’s assigned to interview architect David Guerra, sparks fly. David is older, wealthy and now she’s got him because she’s pregnant. David marries Sarah, but weeks later she loses the baby. They try again, because David longs for a son, and Sarah longs to be loved. But Sarah suffers yet another miscarriage.

Their marriage is being stressed, so David sends Sarah to his home back in Ohio for rest and relaxation. A knock upon the door leads Sarah to be staring at the last person she wants to see; even if it is like looking in a mirror.

What ensues is a mind-bending, warped tale of vengeance.

I have to be honest, I was a bit confused for the first part of this book. I wasn’t certain if we were learning two women’s backstories or having different memories from one? But once it was clear we were dealing with twins, I was very interested in how this was going to play out. You need to stay alert or you won’t be certain whose life is whose anymore!

Ervand’s writing style is unique. She utilizes shorter chapters, and the narrative is very terse. This makes for a very tense and taut feel throughout the story. I was constantly uneasy, which is great for a psychological thriller.

[ TW: miscarriages, infertility, talk of sexual assault. ]

Thank you to Margo Ervand for reaching out to me and offering me a #gifted copy.

The synopsis was promising on this one and sounded like it was right up my alley, but the writing is choppy and doesn't flow well at all. I'm 25% through and the story doesn't make sense and lacks any sort of direction as to where it's going.

I also couldn't connect with the characters shown so far. They are pretty immature and unlikeable for where and who they are supposed to be. I don't have any interest in continuing this one so I sadly have to DNF.

Wow, what the heck did I just read?!
This was a wild and crazy psychological thriller.
I went into this one not knowing much about it, and that definitely worked better for me.
Sarah runs away from home and goes to New York to make a new life for herself.
While working at a magazine, she meets wealthy, older architect David Guerra and falls in love.
She gets pregnant and David marries her, but then she loses the baby.
They both obsess about having children, but she has another miscarriage and the stress makes things unbearable.
David sends her off to live in his childhood home in Ohio to recuperate and grow stronger before they try again, while he remains in New York to continue working.
As she mopes around, she becomes more depressed.
Then one day she answers a knock at the door and has to face her biggest battle yet.
It took me a bit to get into this one. It was strange, demented and creepy entertainment, and not always realistic.
The characters were quite different and not very likable.
A unique story, the author has a great imagination.
Thank you Margo Ervand for the gifted e-book to review.

What in the bloody hell is wrong with these people? They all suck! I just can’t believe people actually act this way. Some do and it’s pretty horrifying. The problem is I don’t know why these particular characters behaved the way they did. There was a tremendous lack of motivation and zero character development, and I was left confused and a bit disappointed with how and why it all played out the way it did. This is a twisted little tale of deceit, envy, rage, insecurity, sadness, and fear, but I found the plot shitty and convoluted. However, the author pulled off an incredible feat and was able to keep everything straight and fairly easy for the reader to follow. The ending was lame and I didn’t find it at all believable. I don’t have much else to say about this book so I don’t think I will. It wasn’t bad just middling.

Addendum: There is so much potential here and I really hope the author writes a near perfect novel next time. I truly believe she has the talent to do so.

Sarah leaves home to try to make it on her own in NYC. There she meets David and it seems as though she's got everything she could ask for... well, except one thing. And that one thing has the potential to destroy her relationship with David. As things start to spiral, trouble shows up on Sarah doorstep, hand in hand with David.

You really have to put in the work to get the full effect of this one. I was confused for much of the beginning of the book. Once it started coming together (Part 2), I was able to make sense of it. This is definitely the type of psychological thriller that'll mess with your mind! It's a twisted little story. I'm purposely keeping my review vague to avoid any spoilers. But, if you like em dark and twisty, check this out!

I went in blind not knowing the premise. It is three separate stories that eventually ties together. I enjoyed that the female lead shows her vulnerability which led to the crazy events. It’s intriguing & twisty! Thank you the author for gifting a copy. This is my honest opinion.

✨ "It's easier for men to call a woman crazy than try to understand her."

This is an interesting psychological thriller that follows a pair of twin sisters. The story started slow at first as we are introduced to each of the sisters, both so similar and yet different at the same time. I particularly enjoyed how the author subtly portrayed the parallels between Sarah's and Samantha's lives, while keeping their POVs distinct.

Things were a bit confusing for me at times as both sisters talk a lot about the various people in their lives, including friends, colleagues, rivals and exes. However, most of these characters do not play a significant role in the story so I felt like it was an overload of unnecessary info. I would say there are actually only 3 main characters here.

The book picks up halfway through and what follows is a game of cat and mouse. Ironically, this is where I started to lose interest because the story was more outlandish than thrilling while the characters were came across as really immature. It was interesting watching what the sisters each got up to but I wasn't particularly gripped or emotionally invested.

Huge suspension of disbelief is required while reading this book. I also wanted more answers and would have loved to hear more from the other characters.

The real gem of this book, however, is the very last paragraph. That final line? Pure perfection.

Recieved a digital copy of this book from the author for a review.

The first 2 parts of the book tell stories about 2 different women....fortunately both stories come together in the last half of the book.

This thriller is full of deceit, mystery and family drama. With a murder to end the book, this book kept me up as I just had to know what happened in the end.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a digital copy of this book in exchange for a fair review!
I think this is one of, if not the first psychological thriller I have read and it did not disappoint! It gave me A Simple Favour vibes, and I really think it would work well as a movie adaptation! It took me awhile to get into it as the first part was a bit slow and I was unsure of where the story was headed, but all of these cryptic chapters and flashbacks suddenly came to a point that had me going, WAIT! WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! From then my mind was racing 100km/hr trying to construct the picture of the main characters and I love when a book makes me think like that! It was so interesting to slowly learn about the characters backstories while anticipating how this would affect the present situation!
I didn't find the main characters very likeable, but it was interesting getting inside their heads and watching their schemes unfold (was so creepy but satisfying ahaha). I did think some topics could have been explored a bit more in depth, but overall this was a very intriguing novel!

Firstly, a massive thank you to Margo Ervand who graciously shared a copy of her book, Mimicry, in exchange for a fair and honest review! Mimicry was entertaining to read, especially given that I knew nothing about it! It was creepy, unsettling, and disturbing- a winning recipe for a thriller. I appreciated the style in which the book was written, in first person which made it feel like watching someone's life unfold in scary detail. While the ending was exciting and unexpected, for about half the book I did feel quite confused and that frustrated me a little bit. However, the build-up was totally worth it. Definitely read this if you are after a deep thrill.

Mimicry by Margo Ervand ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

description

I've been in a romance spree for about a year, so when I was offered a free copy to review this thriller, I jumped right in. I can't really say what's the book about how I normally do because the whole story is extremely intertwined and it must be read blindly (pun intended).

The book is divided in four parts, and the first-person narration goes back and forth, which makes you wonder how the things that are happening in the past are going to lead to what's happening in the present. Since the author doesn't specify when each scene is happening, you'll feel a bit lost, however I believe that was the author's intention, specially because of the narrator's state of mind when everything is happening. I loved that Margo managed to join the two different timelines she created at the end of each part.

The book is a trip inside the head of both main characters... And what a trip. I also loved that none of them are actually likable, they are completely flawed. They feel anger, jealousy and so much hatred! They're inherently human beings... No, worse than that! They inherently problematic human beings. There's no balance in their mind, they feel too much and they act too much on their feelings and that's one of the best things of this book.

I honestly wasn't expecting much, but I was blown away by the puzzles and their resolutions. This book is an unputdownable thriller that deserves to be read.

I will say it was at least a moderately interesting premise, but the writing felt weak and unconvincing. I found at least two dozen typos, which made it hard to take anything seriously since it was not an advanced copy and I read it on Kindle Unlimited.

A lot of the plot didn't really make sense to me. It seemed like details were skipped over, especially when it was something that didn't really seem feasible. I just did not understand how the several aspects of this story tied together. What did anything have to do with anything else? It was all too frantic for me and just felt almost juvenile in the way it was written.

All of the characters were painfully unlikeable except for the poor mom. And one of the characters was SO INCREDIBLY HORRIBLE to her, I just could not find any joy in the book because of it. They were not characters you love to hate. They were characters you hate so much, the book just leaves a foul taste in your mouth.

I'm honestly surprised I did not DNF, but the chapters were mostly so quick, I just kept reading.

I was contacted by the author and offered a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, and it in no way affected my opinions about this book.

Two stories twisted together to become one. I was a little confused at times as to which point of view I was reading from but the story tied together with many twists. The first half of the book provides the backdrop for all the chaos to start. I don’t want to give anything away so I will just say if you are looking for a twisty dark thriller this is it.

I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really think this book is unique, and I enjoyed the darkness and the psychological thriller aspects of the story. However, I found it quite confusing to follow the characters, and I wasn't able to connect with the plot like I'd hoped. I found it quite a difficult read because of a lack of depth in certain areas, but I believe many others would enjoy it more.

“I’ve gotten used to everyone calling me Sam, but I know for sure that I’m Sarah!”

This was a mental journey, that’s for sure. The book is divided into 3 parts, which is part of the issue I had with it.

The first part begins with an unnamed young woman interning at a magazine. She is sent to interview a wealthy architect, David, whom she ends up marrying. Their relationship is tested frequently, especially due to some fertility issues. David needs an heir to his fortune and family name so this creates serious tension.

The second part suddenly jumps to another unnamed young woman. She struggles with family and anger issues. I was extremely confused reading this part because it seemed so disconnected from the first part I had just read. However, the connection is revealed toward the end of the second part and it is insane.

I enjoyed the third part the most. It was full of drama, craziness, and even a crime. The story finally formed together, but honestly, it wasn’t soon enough for me.

I love stories that keep you on the edge of your seat and are unpredictable, but I couldn’t keep up with this one. The beginning and end were great, but I was so confused about the entire middle of this book that it distracts from the overall plot. Don’t get me wrong, the middle was still interesting, but it felt like a different book completely.

Overall, I’m giving this 3.5 stars out of 5. I really wish I could give it more, but the disconnect between parts is still bugging me.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook for an honest review.

The writing style was different than I am use to in a psychological thriller, but I enjoyed it. Part 2 was a little confusing at moments because I had a hard time figuring out how the flashbacks fit into the story. But once the twist happened, it all made sense and I could not put the book down. It was the kind of twist that makes you go “wait…what?!” This book definitely makes you think.

I thought the backstories of the characters were told in a unique way and that allowed them to have good character development. The domestic drama from the past caught up to Sarah when her secrets were threatened to be surfaced. While Sarah was the focus for me, I loved being able to see into the mind of the enemy once they were revealed. I did not care for them at all, I just can’t understand how someone can act that way. But being inside their head made me dislike them even more, which I oddly liked because I was rooting for Sarah a little bit more.  The ending was wrapped up nicely which I like to see.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I loved that everyone had secrets they were hiding and the twist that revealed them was done in a good way.

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks so much for sending me a copy of this ebook to read for an honest review!

This book took me on such a journey! If you’re not into books that have you literally scratching your head + trying to figure out what’s going on - this one isn’t for you.

I personally enjoyed this read, even though I would get confused at times but the level of evil and betrayal… OH it had me feeling some type of way!!

Mimicry was filled with twists and turns! I didn’t want to put it down because I was trying hard to figure out what was going on and who was who (you’ll get it when you read this).

Overall, it was a good book. I enjoyed the characters and getting to know their back stories. Definitely will read another of @margo_ervand’s !

🧬Spoiler Free Book Review🧬

⭐️⭐️💫 (2.5 rounded up)

“I’ve gotten used to everyone calling me Sam, but I know for sure that I’m Sarah!”

Mimicry is an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, shrouded by the unknown. Written in three parts, from two different points of view (Girl 1 and Girl 2), there are twists and turns all around. Sometimes, that goes over really well, but I tend to have a hard time with that type of storyline as I did in this case. As I always say when a book isn’t a good fit for me, please keep in mind that can speak as much to the reader as it does to the writer.

I liked the premise of Mimicry, saw potential in some of the ideas, and enjoyed the direction things went toward the end, but I struggled with the tenses of speech used at times and with some of the verbiage choices. I would have preferred more character development and details about some of the things only hinted at, whereas the author used a much more plot driven style.

The plot is unique and interesting, which is always nice to see but don’t want to say too much about it because I think fans of this type of story will prefer to go in blind. If you like mysteries like Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough, then you might want to give Mimicry a try.

Thank you to the author for gifting me the ebook in exchange for my honest review.

I thought I wasn't in the mood for this book. But it was on my list for November, and as a person that never does anything according to plan, I really wanted to try sticking to the list this time. So, I read it. In three days. It's the kind of book that pulls you inside and you just can't stop. Almost all of the characters are horrible humans full of secrets. But the interesting part in all of this is that I didn't mind it one bit. I liked the weirdness of it, the confusion, the twins' story. Probably what I loved the most was the way of writing. Its direct, it switches characters, and it makes you engage your mind cells and think about what you are reading and what is happening. Last few reads were a little bit of a disappointment for me with a flat storyline and stupid characters, so this one was a refreshment. It is not perfect -I would like to know more about some of the characters, their history and motivation for certain things, but it certainly is worth giving it a try.

I appreciate the author reaching out and offering her book in exchange for my honest review. I did really enjoy it.
