A deadly foreign crisis looms. It’s effect threatens to vibrate across the globe. The world’s most elite scientists have assembled in Tanzania to work on an impossible resolution. It’s an epic, humanitarian cause.

Honey Honig was good at his job, infiltrating the most dangerous places on Earth, and sweet talking the bad guys into releasing their hostages. A former Delta operator, now running missions for Iniquus, he worked the long, tedious, and dangerous business of dragging victims over the thin line that separated rescue from death. If Honey could figure out the right words to say at the right time, they’d live.
When the bad guy slipped through Honey’s fingers, Honey hunted a lead to Tanzania. That’s where he met Meg Finley.
Bad guys weren’t the only ones that Honey knew how to sweet talk. He’d found his way onto an African safari with Dr. Meg Finley, and into her bed. This wasn’t just recreation, though, Meg sparked something deep and binding in Honey’s heart.
Out in the bush, when the group of scientists was taken hostage, Honey and Meg found themselves swept up in the crime. From the inside, could Honey and Meg save themselves? The others? It was one thing to be part of a rescue team, it was a whole other deal, to be on the wrong side of the metal bars.
Whatever else happened, Honey swore he’d find a way to protect Meg, and get her home safe. Or he’d die trying.
This book is about Rooster (codenamed "Honey"), who is a hostage negotiator and security guard for the secret security organization named Iniquus. He is charged with protecting Meg Finley, an animal migration specialist who is traveling in Africa to meet with a group of scientists who are trying to save the world one step at a time in a number of ways. The name "Deadlock" comes from the difficulty of these scientists who are living in a world of opposites, such as modern vs traditional science, survival in the moment vs survival for the long term, robotic mechanization vs human-controlled, even the deadlock in Washington DC. The book provides a lesson in African geography since 5-10 African nations are mentioned as the plot thickens. In the midst of all the science and geography, Rooster and Meg fall in love. But then they are captured by terrorists whose agenda involves keeping African nations struggling so they are more likely to turn to the terrorists for help. I guess the biggest question is how Rooster and Meg will be able to escape the terrorists and save the other scientists as well. I voluntarily read an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
What I loved about Deadlock so much is that it felt different the Relic and Wasp the action while life threatening and heart stopping, the story didn't feel as gasp worthy which is not a bad thing it's because Rooster is a totally different character to the other guy's, he is a gentle giant who can kill when he needs to and talk about his feelings the next, there was even some light hearted humor infused into the story which had be laughing out loud, the circumcision conversation was so funny. This was a brilliantly written love at first sight story, you felt the shivers when he saw Meg's photo and even though you knew what was going to happen you still had more than a few surprises along the way. I really enjoyed it this series has so many interesting elements that the author has linked together so well. I am so excited to read more books from this author.
This third book in the series can be read as a stand alone but is part of a series. I really enjoyed this story, it had a ton of humor, well rounded solid friendships and some romance. Rooster and Randy are what stole the show for me though. They were such a team and I loved the loyalty and devotion they had to each other. No, they aren't the romantic interests but our leading lady, Meg, thinks they are for a time and oh, that was so funny! The action was intense, realistic and fulfilling. The author does a great job in researching her books and it shows.
Another brilliantly written book by master-romantic suspense writer Fiona Quinn! In this novel, Rooster, a highly trained and skilled Iniquus operative is charged to protect Meg, an animal migration specialist as they journey to Africa where Meg is scheduled to work. Once again, the novel is filled with mystery, intrigue, well-crafted characters and thrilling plot twists and turns. Recommend highly. I've enjoyed the Uncommon Enemies Series.
In the first pages of Deadlock, we meet Randy and Rooster – code name Honey – just coming off an assignment in Africa and heading to Tanzania for some R & R with Randy’s sister Meg. Except the guys aren’t on R & R long before they’re assigned to protect Meg and the other scientists in her group.
With her usual uncompromising talent for the fine details, Quinn has crafted another masterpiece. The time and attention she expends on knowing her subjects – weaponry, the military, strategy, politics, third world countries and their issues – all combine to give the reader an experience they won’t soon forget. These characters are engaging, sympathetic, and sometimes even humorous. The situations in which they find themselves leave me awestruck. That she weaves a thread of romance throughout is a part of what makes these “romantic thrillers” but the thrill is always the leading character.
Rooster and Randy are partners working for Inquis. They finish a hostage situation and go for some R & R in Tanzania meeting up with Randy's sister, Dr. Meg Finley. When terrorists take over the hotel that they are staying at, it is up to Rooster to make sure they all make it out alive. I love Rooster and Meg together, but to me the star of the book was Ahbou. This boy, who is the man of his home, is able to help save the day. I absolutely love this book!! As always, Fiona has given her readers amazing characters and great plot details about different parts of the world.
...but she is also totally, head over heels in love! Not something she ever expected to feel but Meg's analytical brain never stops working through the how, why and wonder of it, even when captured and kidnapped. I love Ahbou, he is totally the hero of this book...Yeah, Rooster is good, Alpha, growly, etc, etc. But Ahbou is awesome and so kickass for his age, nothing phases him, he is selfless and he constantly fights for and protects others...a mini Rooster in training and lucky Meg gets both of them! Such a good addition to the series, I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Winner winner "Rooster" dinner! Fiona Quinn has once again put the spotlight on two of her wonderful Iniquus characters, Randy and Rooster. The third book of the Uncommon Enemies series pulled me in at the beginning and didn't let go until it was over. Intrigue, action and a touch of romance make this a book definitely worth reading.
Another heartstopping thriller in the Iniquus World. Rooster and Randy meet up with scientist Meg in Tanzania and adventure ensues. When Rooster and Meg are taken prisoner they must count on themselves to get free and hope for Panther Force to fly to their rescue.
I do wish there had been a little more, like an epilogue, but I am sure we will hear more about these characters in the next books.
I requested and received an ARC and am happy to give my honest review.
Another great romantic thriller by Fiona Quinn. She writes in such a way that you feel like you are in the minds of the characters. You are walking with Rooster and Meg as they puzzle thru the clues to find out who the bad guys are. Who can they trust, who is telling the truth, who is lying? Rooster is my favorite of the Iniquus guys. His call name is Honey which leads to a hilarious misunderstanding. As Rooster and Meg find themselves in hot water, they must work together to stay safe. I can't wait to see what is in store for Rooster and Meg in future books!
I guess it's just me, but I really didn't like the book. Action was ok, but toooo much detail about the country. There were so many dry spots; it almost felt like an educational documentary. And the ending just doesn't make sense. Written well, just didn't like it that much.
I'm a fan of action/adventure/special forces/counter-terrorism stories. Fiona Quinn nails this cross-genre niche and adds ESP and romantic suspense to the mix. What's not to like?
With "Deadlock" (Book 3 of the Uncommon Enemies Series), I have now read 8 of Fiona's novels and loved them all. Fiona develops complex, intriguing story lines and diverse characters. Bad things, sometimes horrible things happen, which reflects the tenor and reality of current global challenges and events.
What sets Fiona apart from other authors is her inclusion of women as protagonists/antagonists and exceptional depth of research in a variety of topics including: weaponry; police/FBI/military tactics, strategies, processes and procedures; politics; history; geography; archeology; languages; cultures; and religion. She talks directly with topical experts to make her stories as realistic as possible. Novelists that take their research to this level and granularity are few and far between.
Fiona created a unique, investigative and special operations capable organization called "Iniquuus" that serves as the foundation of LYNX and Uncommon Enemies series. The men and women recruited to join Iniquus are truly the best of the best, their spy technology and weaponry are leading edge. I like her description of the organization common to the books.
"Iniquus - i'ni/kwus/ - Our strength is unequaled, our tactics unfair -- we stretch the law to its breaking point. We do whatever is necessary to bring the enemy down."
Would that the US was able to create such an organization to help protect and defend our country from enemies foreign and domestic! Able to acquire information beyond current limits/concerns about invasion of privacy. I for one, would willingly grant/cede some of my privacy rights for the greater good of the US.
I highly recommend you read her Iniquus-based series books.
This book wasn't a bad read. It also wasn't quite what I expected. For some reason, I thought there would be a lot more action and suspense.
I liked the characters. I thought the "Honey" misunderstanding when on much too long. If Meg had the relationship with Randy she supposedly had, why not just ask him? Seems like she would know the person she considered her sibling well enough to have at least a slight inkling of his preferences.
There was a lot of conversation in this book. More conversation than actual action. I really started to zone out with all of the finger holding and visualization exercises, the talk of the elephant. I suppose it was all necessary to help Meg function. I also thought the scene in the hotel room was interesting after the realization of what was happening and before they caught up with Randy.
I understood that Meg was a scientist. I found it curious that with her traveling the world, often to dangerous places she would have been better prepared at the whole survival game. Seems like she or her organization would have done that, if only as a measure for self preservation.
I didn't expect her to be in expert in Krav Maga or Muay Thai. I guess I figured in the places she traveled, she would be better prepared if something went wrong. Even having someone to contact for help.
Luckily she had Rooster and they got their HEA. I would give this 2.5 stars.
Honey Honig a Delta Force trained hostage negotiator and Meg an animal migration scientist meet in Tanzania while he is trailing after the kidnappers of his last rescued victims. As they each secretly try to fight their mutual attraction to one another, they are thrust into a dangerous world of geo-political chaos. They are forced to thwart a heinous global plot where they have to use all of their skills, knowledge and abilities to fight for their lives and their fellow hostages. I was not prepared for this big budget action film in a low cost ebook! I was blown away by the non-stop pulse pounding action of this book! I felt like Michael Bay was directing the pages! I was however even more impressed by the wealth of cultural knowledge found in this book. I felt like I was given a passport and transported to Tanzania on a guided tour with National Geographic. The incredible amount of knowledge that the author imparts about the indigenous cultures of Tanzania and their lives was wonderful! I could smell the street food, feel the hot Tanzanian sun on my skin and the residue of the salt mines as the author explores the region while taking the book's protagonists on a dangerous adventure.
I can't wait to read the rest of this series as I have no doubt it will give more action than a Hollywood blockbuster with the depth of a cultural anthropologist! So good!
Rough Men Stand Ready Roster (Honey) Honig and Randy (Eduardo Lopez) are Operatives for Iniquus, a special private black ops organization. As partners in the field, they work together intuitively and smoothly. Their first mission in this book is a tense, high stakes negotiation in Djibouti for a kidnapped couple, and then a desperate rescue. After their daring do in Djibouti is complete, they have an opportunity for some R&R in Zanzibar. They're meeting Randy's sister of the heart, Meg Finley. She's a scientist and an animal migration specialist. The men are joining her for the touristy, icebreaking part of a scientific gathering. Things soon go astray with terrorist hostage situations, kidnapping, torture, attempted escapes and, eventually, serious final closure. On the way to closure, Meg finds herself drawn to Rooster. But she is confused by the "partnership" of the the two men. Randy's use of Roster's call name, Honey, just adds to her confusion. The light levity brought on by this misunderstanding is a perfect counterpoint to the sordid world they face. Adding to the story is the appearance of a bright, clever and valuable young orphan boy, Ahbou. The tight community that is Iniquus brings this story together and allows Honey, Randy, Meg and Ahbou to act unilaterally while still bringing everything to a satisfying end. And a glorious beginning for Rooster and Meg.
I enjoyed listening to this book but for different reasons to the previous jack be quick. This book had minimal action throughout the story but it all came in a whirl near the end. There was a lot of psychological information coming from the H to the h as they grappled with a dire situation. There was a bit more romance and a tad of steam in this novel by Fiona. And I have to say Ms Quinn, you certainly wrote a crisis appearing at a most inopportune for the two main characters. These plotlines, of late, are fairly simple. Based on missions that requires a heap of intel and some surprising failures that creates the action in amongst the chapters. The grit and darkness is left out of most of these book series but instead, leaves impression and innuendo. It makes for enjoyable listening. I'm still a lynx and strike force series fan though. The only drawback with audible, which I'm reluctant to say, is the change of narrators. The lynx series had a narrator that gave voice accents to the strike force members, but with change comes accent difference. And unfortunately, I loved the voices of the characters given by the lynx series narrator. Hoping gator will be southern.
This is an exciting, suspenseful, romantic and even funny book. I just love this type of book! I can’t imagine what I would think if I saw a 6 foot 8 inch man coming towards me! That is how tall Rooster is. What is even funnier is that his handle is Honey because of his last name. The story about how he got his name was funny too. Rooster is partnered up currently working with Randy in Africa. After they finish an exciting mission, they fly over to where Randy’s sister Meg is working to spend a few days with her. She is a scientist and is in Africa with about 20 other scientists. I loved that Randy keeps calling Rooster Honey and Meg thinks the two are gay. She was a little hurt her brother didn’t tell her, plus she is attracted to Rooster and has to keep having talks with herself! There is a super bad guy that wants to do harm to the scientists so Rooster and Randy get caught up in an exciting and nail biting adventure. This is a great book that I strongly encourage you to read.
Deadlock is by Fiona Quinn. Rooster “Honey” Honing is negotiating the return of a wealthy gentleman, Mr. Bowman, and his wife from Momo. He doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere until he overhears just enough to figure out where they are being kept. He and his team initiate a rescue; but don’t get the man holding them. He and his teammate and friend, Randy, are then sent on Rand R to Tanzania where they meet up with Randy’s adopted sister, Meg. Meg hears Randy call Rooster “honey” and thinks they are a couple. It is a shame because she could really like Rooster. As part of their R&R, they are accompanying Meg on a safari with some scientists who are there for a conference. Just as she finds out her mistake thinking Randy and Rooster are a couple and she and Rooster are getting to know each other, Momo decides to kidnap the scientists. Rooster has to figure out how to get Meg out of danger and keep her alive. He also realizes that Momo is the man Iniquus is looking for as the kidnapper. Can he get them out alive?
Deadlock (Uncommon Enemies #3) is superbly written and edited! The story centers around Rooster and Meg. They are scrambling to save the world from a damaging world crisis. Working with scientist from around the globe. Terrorists have seized upon the group and taken hostages determined that their rights supersede all other humans on the planet's desires.
The timing of this book is utterly amazing! Fiona Quinn surely must be a modern day oracle! I hope that her story.. will not become one of reality. Some of the bits and pieces.. one can foresee being told on the news in the coming weeks. I was fortunate to get an advance copy to give an honest review. Little did I know.. I was also being given a peek at what could be. All we can hope.. is that there is a real life Meg, scientist.. who can assist with a solution! :)
I highly recommend reading this story!! You will totally enjoy the twists and turns!
Another Truly Amazing read from Fiona Quinn! This book has a lot of twists, turns and humor! If you want a book that will grab you into the story then this book is for you! Rooster A.K.A. Honey is an operative from Iniquus. His job is hostage negotiating. When he finishes a job with Randy (another Iniquus Operative) they head out on required Rest & Relaxation with a trip to Zanzibar and Tanzania to rendezvous with Meg (who is an honorary sister to Randy and sister to FBI Agent Steve Finley) but Rest & Relaxation is the last thing that they actually get. This book is definitely worth the read and will hook you into wanting to read all the books by Fiona Quinn! Don’t miss out on reading all her books….Uncommon Enemies series and The Lynx series. Once you’ve read one you’ll definitely want to read them all! Thank you Fiona Quinn for all the Fantastic reads! I can’t wait for the next one!!!!
Hostage negotiator, Rooster ‘Honey’ Honig and his partner, Randy, go to Zanzibar for mandatory downtime where Randy’s foster sister, Dr. Meg Finley’s awaiting a seminar. Meg and Honey give each other flirty smiles but Meg misunderstands exactly what kind of partners Randy and Honey are.
Base advises a team’s been dispatched as the seminar is a target rich environment while Randy and Honey are assigned to guard the scientists until then. The nebulous and seemingly well-staffed Rex Deus group appears to be responsible for attacking the hotel and kidnapping the scientists, Randy and Honey aren’t sure of a nearby frienemy daisy chain.
While not a bad read, this outing didn’t have enough romance or action for my taste plus the pacing (due to the non-stop talking made the read drag, however the cuteness of the confusion as Honey and Meg met was worth points although this reader felt as if something was missing based on the next mention of their relationship. Rating: 3.5stars
Deadlock starts out nice and easy but quickly becomes heartstoppingly suspenseful, deadly and terror ridden. Fiona Quinn provided lots of fascinating insights into the Maasai culture and way of life. I learn something new in each book of her I read. This was an exciting, danger filled and triumphant romance with stellar characters.
I fell in love with Rooster "Honey" Honig rather quickly. There was just something about his persona that resonated with me. His calm, cool under pressure, take control yet deadly vibe was awesome. I enjoyed his and Eduardo "Randy" Lopez's playful banter and then rooted for them every step of the way as they worked side by side in the face of overwhelming odds. Meg Finley is the "adoptive" sister of Randy. Her job as an animal migration specialist by no means prepares her for the deadly events she's about to undergo. But it's because of Honey that she keeps her wits about her and prevails despite the odds.
Honeys story takes place in another country. The last two books and mention Honey being gone for a negotiation and now we get to see the negotiation and why he went silent. The connection between Randy and the Finley’s was not one I had noticed from the other books so that was fun to learn about. I was belly laughing over some of the misunderstanding and start to the romance.
This book was great. It had a lot of details and action, but also some heartwarming moments about family, siblings, world collaborations and more. I was holding my breathe over some of the acts until the end and I gasped over the final part of the book. A good read and one of my favorites of this series. I do still have a question about the logistics of the romance, but I liked the story!
Gripping adventure in Africa with terrorists kidnapping scientists and researchers for ransom. The Africans are losing their way of life and terrorists capitalize on this by capturing professionals that come to study and help find solutions to the harsh climate, lack of water. They stir up young men to join their agenda but the ransoms go to fund terror groups not help locals as promised. Meg a animal migration specialist is kidnapped along with her foster brother a former Army Delta operative/now Iniquus Security operative, his partner and a group of scientists. This is well written with a lot of African geography and glimpse into local customs. Solid short story (it takes place mostly in 2-3 days) and there is a rescue and VERY abrupt ending. The MC code name Honey was mentioned in Defender's Instinct Cerberus Tactical K9 #3 as a side character.
Fiona Quinn’s latest romantic thriller, ‘Deadlock’, provides another excursion into the danger-packed world of the Iniquus private security company and its ex-Special Operations personnel. The tale starts with a bang as they resolve a hostage crisis in Djibouti and quickly transfers to East Africa where two of the operators become victims of a large-scale hostage taking along with a group of tourists and scientists.
The scene is set for another of author Quinn’s fast-paced suspense tales with a strong romantic overtone and she doesn’t fail to deliver the goods. The story is solid and timely, the characters engaging and authentic, and the social commentary hits the bulls-eye.
Very good romantic suspense. I am hooked on all books regarding Inniquis/Strike Force and Panther Force. Rooster "Honey" Honig a hostage negotiator and Meghan "Meg" Finley, scientist and sister to Steve Finley (FBI agent) from a previous book who worked with Innquis on an Op. Rooster and his partner Randy were supposed to be on a R&R trip after finishing an Op, but end up stumbling on a terrorist situation regarding Meg who they vow to protect. Situation arises and Rooster and Randy fight the terrorist but are outnumbered and allow themselves to be taken hostage when Meg is taken. Sexual tension between Meg and Rooster is evident, but Meg shuts it down as she thinks Rooster and Randy are a couple, hilarious, but undertstandable. Enjoyed it.
