Rick Joyner is the founder and executive director of MorningStar Ministries and Heritage International Ministries and is the Senior Pastor of MorningStar Fellowship Church. He is the author of more than forty books, including The Final Quest, A Prophetic History, and Church History. He is also the president of The Oak Initiative, an interdenominational movement that is mobilizing thousands of Christians to be engaged in the great issues of our times, being the salt and light that they are called to be. Rick and his wife, Julie, have five children: Anna, Aaryn, Amber, Ben, and Sam.
This book illustrates the good and bad of "in-house" publishing. The book is so poorly written that it probably wouldn't have been published except that the press belonged to Joyner's church. Lots of repetition, convoluted passages, unclear antecedents and unclear references. His hyperbole is almost funny: His opening sentence declares he about to read two accounts of the most exciting acts of God in the last two thousand years." (I wasn't a math major but Joyner seems to be putting these revivals higher than the death, resurrection and ascension of Christ.) On page 17 he writes, "Since I received this vision in 1992, much of the world has experienced the greatest move of God possibly in history to date." Huh? Humble, too. The book begs for decent editing.
On the other hand, a good history and lesson learned from the early twentieth century revivals in Wales and Los Angeles is profitable for believers in the early twenty-first century. Joyner really believes in his subject and tried to make the events in Wales and California immediate to the reader. But . . . he fails.
Read just the last chapter of the book and you've got ninety percent of his message.
This book gave me a new and interesting perspective about how God is moving in the modern age. I definitely encourage its reading for those who are looking for more of God and how He moves nowadays.
For those like me - born and raised in a traditional church -, this is a must reading! I have not studied enough about revivals nor penthecostal movements. In this sense, the book helped me to understand how God is doing miracles and using the supernatural to show His glory in the current days. It presents facts that show how the Gospel transformed the Welsh society in early 1900's. More than that, it led me to think about how the World could be transformed if we experience a true revival movement again.
I also recommend this book for non-believers. It brings an interesting view about how the Bible is alive and applicable in the modern society. If you are looking for facts of how powerful God's presence is, the book brings a series of examples about it. Also, I encourage you to not only read the book, but also to look for the references. Check how those movements transformed the society in Wales and LA during and after their occurrence!
Last but not least: if you are a Portuguese speaker, don't miss the chance to also read "Nuvem de Glória" (Sarah and Teófilo Hayashi). It describes some very similar signs to those observed in the beginning of Welsh and Azusa revivals. Definitely worth it!
His explanation of each revival was interesting and informative despite being somewhat disjointed and hard to follow. The last portion of the book, analyzing the mistakes made in each revival provides a good handbook for success of future revivals. Holy Spirit come!
I guess I was hoping for something I could share with others to increase their hunger for the Holy Spirit, salvations, miracles and healings. The book is kind of a review of the Welsh and Azusa Street moves of God. Something you will get in the book is other authors and names of those involved should you decide to investigate this time further.
