Persuasion: Screenplay

Rate this book
Winner of the 1996 BAFTA for Best Single Drama

Jane Austen's classic novel is the story of Anne Elliot. Engaged eight years previously to a young navel officer, Frederick Wentworth, she allowed herself to be persuaded by a trusted family friend that the young man she loved wasn't an adequate match, and that she had better prospects. The scene opens some seven years after Anne has refused the love of her life when Frederick Wentworth returns from the sea, in search of a wife.

Nick Dear's critically acclaimed screen play was first screened on BBC2 in April 1995 and was subsequently released worldwide as a feature film.

Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are an implicit critique of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), were a modest success but brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels—Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons.
Since her death Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. A significant transition in her reputation occurred in 1833, when they were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series (illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering and sold as a set). They gradually gained wide acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Her work has inspired a large number of critical essays and has been included in many literary anthologies. Her novels have also inspired many films, including 1940's Pride and Prejudice, 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2016's Love & Friendship.

One of the best Austen adaptations. I love the book and this movie version.

The script is almost identical to the movie, but I did notice one big difference. After Wentworth tells Anne his sister and brother-in-law will leave Kellynch if Anne marries Mr. Elliot, Anne leaves.
Lady Russell says to Wentworth," You have an extraordinary ability to discompose my friend, sir."
Wentworth responds: "You have an extraordinary ability to influence her, ma'am, for which I find it hard to forgive you."
As I remember it, the movie scene ends there. In the script, there is one more line from Lady Russell:
"If persuasion has been exercised, remember that it has been on the side of safety, not of risk. You have had good fortune, but that was not to be foreseen. I act in Anne's best interest. I care for her more than for anyone else in the world."

It's better without that line, I think. I can't recommend the film enough.

Beautifully written. Can visualize the longing, yearning and a tinge of sadness. Loved the portrayal of Anne as the then strong-minded and broad-minded one there is in that backdrop. Though the time was such, the whole story seemingly showing women's only job is to take care of home and wait for the guy disheartened me.

I'm afraid this book just was not my cup of tea. It just did not hold my interest. Put it down several times and had a difficult time getting back to it.
