Really awesome collection of poetry. I learned a lot from it and want to learn more about the authors and the period and it provides some information on the writers included as well.
Beautiful selection of British First World War poetry by both standard and lesser known poets. Originally produced in 1965, the author was able to speak to many of the original poets. It is heart rending and profoundly moving to read of the first time that humans fought machines and lost. At the time it was inexplicable and culture shattering. The typical European/American belief in an optimistic, scientific view of life ended in the mud of Flanders and Verdun. The madness of Fascism and Communism has its origins in the trenches of the Western Front.
It is nice to read poems from other than the 'usual suspects' like Owen, Sassoon, Brooke and Graves and includes two women, Charlotte Mew and Fredegond Shove. I also liked the way the poems were structured by themes.
