Coding for Beginners and Kids Using Python: Python Basics for Beginners, High School Students and Teens Using Project Based Learning

Rate this book
Are you looking to start coding? Or teach kids how to code? This book on beginner Python coding can solve your problem. For the last couple of years, the news keeps talking about the digital economy and how everyone needs programmers. It seems like everyone wants to learn how to code. However, it is not that easy. Coding is a skill; and like any skill it takes time to learn. Like any skill, the younger you start; the better you get. From my personal experience with coding and also with teaching young kids how to code, let me tell you that coding is a lot of fun and extremely gratifying. It teaches you how to organize, think logically, communicate, work in teams and be more creative. However, programming can be hard to learn. Especially if you start reading advanced books. You need a step-by-step guide to get started. This book starts off with the very basics; how to install the Python software, set up and write your first lines of code. There are exercises at the end of each chapter that can test your new found knowledge and move you ahead. This kind of project based learning is great to get you moving and confident. And then, we get you a few more intermediate skills that can get you comfortable with Python. Even if you've never touched a computer in your life, you will find this book useful. Odd Assumptions and Stilted Writing

I have done basic coding myself for over 30 years, so I'm always intrigued when books come out for beginners or children. Unfortunately, I do not think this is the best book to introduce beginners or children to coding or the Python language. The introduction itself is odd as if the author is expecting a lot of pushback about learning to code from both the parent that is perhaps reading this book and the child who may or may not be interested in coding. This seems like an odd emphasis because the person who is looking through or has bought the book has an interest at some level already. In fact, the beginning of this introduction comes off almost as if the author is trying to convince you how difficult it is to learn to code and the many reasons why you or your child might be resistant to it. The introduction has a very negative vibe to it. I would have preferred to have seen the author encourage both parent and child that coding is a worthwhile venture. The author makes some broad assumptions about both the adult and the child who could be reading this book; I found them inappropriate and not helpful. One annoying issue is the author assumes the child who might be interested in coding is a boy. As I am a grownup girl (!) who learned to coding years ago, I can say with certainty that girls are interested in coding as well.

The book is also written in very awkward, stilted language, both the introduction and the rest of the book. This might be somewhat excusable if the book was not meant to be instructional, but it does hamper meaning in places and makes for unpleasant reading in others. As to the instruction itself, as someone who does coding, I felt like the author left glaring gaps that would preclude learning by either a beginner adult or a child. The author introduces concepts but not the syntax specific to Python. Computer languages usually have the same concepts (e.g., strings, functions, variables, etc.), but they differ in how they are expressed, called, and written. It's as if he expects the reader will pick it up from the examples, but that's the hard way of doing it. If you or your child has an interest in learning Python or learning how to code, there are undoubtedly better books out there to help you on your way.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Excellent intro into Coding for kids. This book takes a very tough subject and makes it easy for kids to learn the beginning steps of coding. I highly recommend this book if you are a parent with a child who is curious about how computers work. It also helps adults too. At 62 pages it isn't a long read, but filled with great information.
