Tess & Alex are workaholics with chemistry so intense it makes them feel like they're cheating on their jobs when all they want to do is be with each other. But their pasts and schedules seem to always get in the way. They've both carefully designed their lives so that there are no surprises, but life has a funny way of not listening to pre-set plans and schedules. Tess is absolutely married to her job of writing happily ever afters. She loves everything about her committed relationship with words and books. The parameters of their relationship and Tess' life are cut and dry, black and white. And then Alex showed up with his gorgeous crooked smile and shaded everything gray, and now she doesn't know if she can ever turn the page back. Words have always been Tess' salvation, but is it possible for her to find a happily ever after of her own?
Alex is utterly addicted to this woman. Beautiful, beguiling, Tess is a drug taunting him to have one more hit. His life is a deep dive into projects with no regard for anything and anyone else. Work is all there is. Alex and his friends have built their podcast into a media empire, making a difference. Being a political pundit is what he believes he was put on this earth to do. But what if he could love Tess the same way he loves his job? Alex believes Tess is his perfect woman, but he just doesn't have the luxury of falling for her. Sleeping with her, absolutely. But he doesn't believe he has the bandwidth for love. Fate sees it a little differently. They could have a once-in-a-lifetime love if only their schedules overlapped. They're going to have to give up their carefully curated control, or they could lose everything.
I used to create "dreams" with my best friend growing up. We'd each pick a boy we liked, then we'd write down a meet-cute that always ended with a happily ever after.
Now I get to dream every day, although it's a little steamier these days. And I've discovered I can and will write anywhere I can. Keep tuned to Instagram to see all the times I fit in a sentence or two.
I'm a writer, married to a writer, mother of a creative dynamo of a nine-year-old boy and currently a little sleepy. I'm a klutz and goofball and love lipstick as much as my Chuck Taylors.
Good things in the world: pepperoni pizza, Flair pens*, wine, coffee, laughing with my friends until my stomach hurts, a musician at the top of their game, getting lost somewhere I've never been, matinee movies on a weekday, the Chicago Cubs, a fresh new notebook full of possibilities, bourbon on a cold night, Fantasy Football, witty men, walking through the local zoo in the rain and that moment when a character clicks in and begins to write their own adventure. I'm just the pen.
Kelly Kay is a new to me author and I have to say, I LOVED how her writing swept me up and made everything else disappear. I literally devoured this book.
Side Piece was an interesting trope I rarely see in romance. Alex and Tess are both workaholics and after a chance encounter at a hotel bar, both of them can't deny their chemistry. What follows is a whirlwind of sexy times and the absolute BEST witty banter I've ever read. They both agree to be "side pieces" since they're married to their jobs. Tess is a best selling author and Alex is a political podcaster. Living in different cities and having jam-packed schedules, how will these two make anything work?
The dynamics of their relationship was intriguing. I adored how they made time in their schedules to see each other. A lot of their interactions involved sexy times, but they did have awesome conversations. They definitely had good communication at first, but as more feelings came into the picture everything fell apart. While Tess seemed devoted to their unusual arrangement, Alex was held back by a past relationship that ruined his opinion of them, not to mention his views on what his father gave up for love. He really REALLY ticked me off at one point. I did not blame Tess for her reaction.
I dropped a star because of the drama. This book has a separation of the couple for months (not too brief ~ MONTHS) and the MMC sleeps with other women (not detailed, just mentioned). Yes, they are separated and there's no hope of them getting back together at that time (to them) but as a reader I KNEW they were going to get back together so that bothered me, especially knowing Alex still cared for Tess. It broke my heart. Literally. If you can handle that, then it shouldn't take away from the story for you. I develop bonds with characters so I feel emotions beyond what I'm reading lol I have to be honest as a reviewer. That ONE thing was a "me thing," (sorry Kelly!) and while it did bother me, I cannot deny my love for this book.
Side Piece was fast-paced, unique, steamy, funny, witty, and emotional. I was expecting a bit of a romcom, contemporary romance and while I got that I also got so much more. The side characters, mainly Mikey and Ari, were GOLD. Loved them to pieces (especially that epilogue! Lol). Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was exactly what I needed amidst so many dark romances I've read recently.
This is a new author to me but after reading Side Piece, I will certainly be checking out other works by Ms Kay in fact I’m struggling to understand why she hasn’t crossed my radar before now. This is a fun, entertaining read that captivated me from the first page to the last line, I loved Tess and Alex and I enjoyed joining two workaholics living in different cities trying to find time to hook up. Tess is an author and Alex is a political podcaster, both very busy and engrossed with their work but that doesn’t stop them finding time for some seriously hot hook ups but when feelings come into play it takes more time and energy to make this work, so will either be prepared to they make the time for a relationship....... Side Piece is an entertaining, witty read with plenty of hot hook ups, it has wonderful characters with sizzling chemistry and the banter flows naturally. An enjoyable read that left me wanting to check out more from this author.
This is an amazing story. They are a perfect fit for each other, they go through their ups and downs and emotions history but still find their way to each other. I couldn’t put it down.
I’ve become a big fan of Kelly Kay, and with every book of hers read, she proves to me time and again that my admiration is well founded. Side Piece is the fast-paced story of Tess and Alex, two workaholics caught up in a sizzling attraction that catches fire after a one night stand… and keeps smouldering even while separated (these two give good phone… ahem!). Ms. Kay has done it again with a sensual, often funny, and at times, heartfelt read. Oh, and she really should consider teaching a master class in the art of writing such scorching hot love scenes. Yowza.
I have to start by saying my favorite part of Tess & Alex’s story was the banter between them. I loved the back and forth and how they challenged each other. Two people who didn’t have time for much, but made time for each other.
Side Piece is the first book that I have read by Kelly Kay and it definitely won’t be my last. I look forward to reading more by Kelly Kay in the future.
“Watch out for the unexpected. It’s the thing that might make you the happiest or most miserable.” This quote couldn’t be more true. Tess and Alex didn’t expect to meet that night in the DC hotel bar, but once they did their lives were forever changed.
Kelly Kay wrote the most heartbreaking yet heartwarming story about two people who lived and hid behind their careers. She made these two obviously flawed characters real, and made the emotions raw. She gave them a support system of many colorful characters that gave this book a little levity.
This story will ask questions and make you think and make you feel. I loved Alex and Tess, I loved their connection, I loved their ability to love. I just loved this story.
Kelly Kay's "Side Piece" was a steamy standalone novel that had its funny moments as well as a surprising amount of angst. Main characters Tess and Alex both loved their work and were very committed to advancing their careers, and neither could imagine rearranging their priorities to make room for a romantic relationship. As the story progressed and we learned more about each of them, it became apparent that the reasons for their devotion to work were a lot more complicated than they initially seemed, and both were carrying a lot of emotional baggage that explained their unwillingness to commit.
There were a lot of things I liked about this book, most notably the quirky friendship Tess developed with Alex's business partner, Mikey, and Tess and Alex's flirty, witty banter. That said, I sometimes found Tess and Alex's conversations to be a bit difficult to follow, especially when they were exchanging backstories. They sometimes jumped from one topic to another with virtually no transition or picked up the same topic several chapters later as if they had never left off the discussion. I also found myself getting annoyed with the number of times they asked each other (rhetorically) why the sex was so good, or said they shouldn't have such strong feelings for each other so soon after meeting. Those observations became repetitive very quickly.
In addition, as much as I felt bad for Alex after everything he went through with his ex-girlfriend, Charlotte, I still found myself liking him less and less as the story progressed. It really bothered me that he didn't tell Tess about Charlotte until it was almost too late, especially after Tess had been so honest and upfront with him. Alex's big speech at the end rubbed me the wrong way, too. For some reason, it came across to me like he was trying to "mansplain" Tess's feelings to her. At the very least, I would have liked to see Alex grovel more before Tess forgave him.
As stated earlier, there was a lot that I liked about "Side Piece," but there were a few too many bothersome aspects for me to really love the story. However, I would still recommend it for fans of contemporary romance and romantic comedy, particularly anyone who enjoys the insta-lust/insta-love trope. I would read more of Kelly Kay's work in the future.

Alex and Tess are both certified workaholics who don’t let anything or...anyone stand in their way. Work is their love. Work is their life. Work is the only thing that they have consistently in their life.
Both have had their own issues but when they come across one another at a bar (also aware of who the other is) their relationship kicks off from there. One thing they both agree to is to never let their love for their work slip due to one another. Months pass and they travel back and forth when their schedules allow some free time just to share some moments with each other.
Their relationship progresses and suffers some ups & downs but they get through it. I enjoyed their banter, the sex and honestly the basis for this novel, their love for their careers. I’ve never read a novel where the characters loved their jobs so much but not in a weird, nauseating way. They legitimately enjoy what they do.
Tess, reminded me so much of Liza from the tv show ‘Younger’. I even read her words in Liza’s voice in my head. Tess’ responses were witty and full of sass that I loved it. I appreciated her independence so much as well. Alex, as much of a workaholic as he is, he’s sexy, intelligent and so incredibly loving. You can tell as you’re reading that Alex is gonna fall hard for Tess.
I also liked the other characters in the novel (Mikey is that guy best friend I never knew I needed) and you get a sense of how busy they were with work/traveling just by the way it was written. If you, as a reader, can feel the stress of a character’s life, then the author (not writer haha) is doing their job.
Read this if you want some sexy, romantic, funny times from this workaholic couple. Thank you Grey’s Promo & Kelly Kay for the eARC!
I received a free ARC copy of this book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a brand new author for me and the plot sounded very original and so I wanted to give it a shot. The writing was really well done and I enjoyed the originality of the story but the male lead kinda destroyed my love of this story for me.
Alex and Tess meet in a bar. They have never met before. They both really like the bartender and they know who each other is. Alex is a political writer with a popular blog that he founded with some friends and Tess is an author or romance. They both lead extremely busy lives and so they both agree to have a sexual relationship when they can find the time.
Now why I did not love Alex. I hate books that have the male or female have sex with other people during the course of the story. If they are split I want them to both be miserable and not to have sex with others. It kinda turns me off a book when that happens. No cheating occurred because they were broken up but I still had to read that Alex slept with other people and that really did not make me want to see them make up. In fact I thought Tess could do better.
Obviously they have issues and it was interesting watching them working thru them and try and make things work. This is a very long romance, 77 chapters and for them to have a relationship compromise and a lot of work is required and while this book kept my interest and I adored Tess, I did not love Alex even after he makes up with Tess
My 2025 Book Boyfriend Crown Has Officially Been Snatched.
Move over, everyone… Alex has bulldozed his way straight into my #1 spot for 2025 book boyfriends. I am talking top of the charts, I will never recover, someone please peel me off the floor levels of obsession.
Side Piece by Kelly Kay is 400 pages of pure, unskippable, phone-on-DND, kids-don’t-talk-to-me right now ADDICTION. I devoured this book like I had been wandering the romance desert and Kelly Kay handed me the coldest, thirst-quenching drink of my life.
This trope? Side Piece? Not only is it wildly unique, but Kelly Kay executes it like a master. Tess and Alex aren’t cheating on people—they’re cheating on their own lives, their schedules, their workaholic identities. And the way they crash into each other? Chemistry so instant, so blinding, so toe-curling that I genuinely felt like a third wheel at their DC hotel bar meet-cute.
And let’s talk about Tess for a second: My queen. My author girl. My “I write HEAs but forgot I deserve one too” icon. She is smart, messy, funny, and so heartbreakingly earnest that I would die for her. She and Alex have this perfectly imperfect gravitational pull that feels like two meteors colliding in slow motion. You KNOW it’s going to shatter them. You KNOW it’s going to change them. You also KNOW you can’t look away.
And Alex… Lord. This man is a problem. The political podcaster with the gorgeous crooked smile and devastating emotional repression??? SIGN. ME. UP. He is sexy, angsty, emotionally complicated, and written with so many sharp, addictive edges that I was flipping pages like I was on a mission. Every scene. Every glance. Every “let’s just meet once more.” I was feral.
Kelly Kay writes the kind of banter, longing, and emotional unraveling that makes you feel like the book is breathing under your hands. It’s not just sexy—though trust me, it is—it’s layered, intimate, and so full of heart. She makes imperfect people fall into imperfect situations and somehow makes it the most beautiful thing you’ll read all week.
And now? Now I am doomed. I took one bite out of Kelly Kay’s writing and I have to consume her entire backlog like a buffet. My TBR is trembling. My Kindle is sweating. It’s going to take me a year and a half, but I’m in. I’m committed. Sign me up for every book.
If you love: 💥 Angst that hits like a freight train 🔥 Chemistry so hot you need SPF 💬 Sharp, addictive banter 🏨 Hotel bars + “just one more night” energy ❤️ Characters who are flawed, real, and healing in real time 📚 A trope you RARELY see in romance, done to absolute perfection
Then Side Piece is your next obsession. Not a recommendation. A lifestyle.
Kelly Kay is a new to me author, and I really enjoyed her writing style so I'll be checking out more of her work. This title makes it seem likes there's cheating, but the only cheating happening is on Tess & Alex's jobs. Neither wants any sort of relationship, so when they meet at a bar, they get it on, and it is HOT! It's so hot that this starts becoming a habit whenever they're in the same area, and it's not too long before feelings are being caught despite their best efforts to keep things casual. The author had me fully invested in them, so when they were separated for some time, and I thought Alex cared somewhat, he slept with others which is just gross to me (even without detail) because I believed it was out of fear & I don't do cowards plus why can't the man be miserable & celibate too?! I'm sure I'll be in the minority because you know, the separation with no end in sight could make it okay in other readers eyes, but this is where we are as I wanted Tess to find someone else, and make no apologies for it. Anyway, this is only my opinion, so I don't want to keep giving it because I would rather y'all just decide for yourselves by hitting those one click buttons! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

🌟🌟🌟🌟
Two workaholics that are willing to be each other's side piece. Work is everything for Alex and Tess, but after lusting over each other and reciprocating that connection once they actually met, they decide they'll meet for a dose of "hit it and run" all over the country, as their jobs permit.
This is a new-to-me author, and I enjoyed reading this book. It has elements that can be considered off-putting for a romance book (won't get into them because, spoilers, sweetie), but I was able to continue reading...I was invested in these characters and wanted to know how these characters made it work. The protagonists were older and successful, which I always enjoy seeing in romance books (authors take note: Love is not only for 20 somethings). The conflicts and hang-ups were realistic (and that sometimes can make the reader uncomfortable). My only gripe is the surprise pregnancy, (which I am not a fan of this trope as I have mentioned before). Not all HEA's involve pregnancy or even kids.
If none of the aforementioned bothers you, I think you'll enjoy this book as it has enough different elements that set it aside from what's out there.
This book is from a new to me author, and made me an insta-fan.
This book is the story of Alex and Tess. Alex runs a new business centered around politics and is constantly working and traveling for work. He doesn't have time for a girlfriend, but that's never been an issue. He likes the way his life is. Then he meets a woman in a hotel bar.
Tessa is a contemporary romance author who is also a workaholic. She can write pretty much anywhere, but she spends a lot of time traveling to book signings and other book related events. She enjoys her life the way it is. Then she meets a man in a hotel bar.
They have amazing chemistry and spend the night together. When is time to go their separate ways, neither one really wants this to be the last time they see each other, which is a first for both of them. So they make a plan to meet again in 6 weeks when his schedule calms down. They both agree it's for the best, but then once they've gone a few days, they break their agreement to see each other again, and again and again. After the six weeks is up, they get the chance to find out if their relationship is more than lust, and that's where the reader gets the best part of the story. Two people who live for work are that way for a reason.
The author did a great a great job of making me feel everything the characters did. All the angst, desperation, chemistry, and everything in between. I was fully invested in this story and enjoyed every page of it. I would definitely recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading some more Kelly Kay books!
I loved this workaholics romance. Tess is an Author and Alex is political podcaster. They don’t have time for love but sex works. They agree to be each other’s side pieces because they are both married to their job. They live in different cities and are so busy it’s a wonder they have time for anything let alone each other. I love how they schedule it though and although it’s mostly for sex they have amazing chemistry and banter. But ultimately it always ends with someone wanting more and the other being to damaged or just plain stubborn . There is some drama and they break up or stop seeing each other. Even though they both clearly have feelings for each other. I thought it would be a quick separation but it is long. And emotional and I was irritated with Alex.
Side piece was funny at times, lots of steamy sex, witty banter and amazing chemistry, it also was emotional at times. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of contemporary romance. Long distance relationships or a workaholic, who doesn’t think they can have love too. I have never read anything from Author Kelly Kay before but I definitely will now.
Side Piece by Kelly Kay had me intrigued from the start, Tess and Alex ABSOLUTELY fascinating me!
The journey that these two characters went on had me HOOKED!
Tess is feisty, fierce, sassy, and so incredibly clever and witty, I loved every minute of it!
Alex is so gosh darn charming, he was utterly SWOONWORTHY!
The story is fast paced, yet takes you on one HECK of an emotional rollercoaster ride of a journey, tons of twists and turns, and for a while you're left on tenterhooks not knowing which way is up. And it's so well written!
The premise is charming! The descriptions and characterization well considered and thought out, giving the reader a wealth of information to absorb as they eagerly turn the pages.
The hilarious and amazing cast of secondary characters ABSOLUTELY bolsters an already amazing narrative, and they'll have you chuckling for sure!
The emotional investment and payout is thoroughly worth it. The text conversations will make you grin. So if you're looking for a book to fall in love with, pick this one, don't just have it be your Side Piece!
Kelly Kay is a new author to me and I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved this book. The title made me think this was possibly a cheating book, which I have trouble reading. Nope Alex and Tess are only 'cheating' on their jobs! Neither is looking for a relationship, but after a one night neither was able to forget each other. Alex decides to track Tess down and its weeks of stolen nights, moments in airports and whatever time they can get together. After Tess injures herself and has to rely on Alex, they fall into a life of normal couples spending day in and day out. This life proves too much but Alex and Tess are connected and can't get away from prying BFFs. I truly enjoyed reading this book and watching Alex and Tess realize the what is the most important in life!
Kelly Kay is a new author to me. This was a fun and entertaining read... and whoo steamy too. Tess and Alex, once they meet they can't keep their hands to themselves. I liked the theme to the book, it wasn't something I have read before. I was expecting a friends with benefits thing, but instead this was more and totally different and I liked the twist. They were the side pieces to their jobs(which they were married too), but their relationships with each other were intense. The climax of the story, threw me a bit, and left me going what happened, but I'm always here for the drama. The secondary characters were my fav.. mikey and ari were a hoot. This is definitely worth a read. 4.5
Fireworks, hot lovemaking and devastating traumas As Tess and Alex are both workaholics, they understand each other’s ‘marriage’ to their work. But the attraction is too strong to stay away for more than a few days. The love affair that follows, is steamy and thorough, they are made for each other. Until they find that traumas from the past are still very much present and might be ruining their future. The way this process is described, is very realistic and takes the reader (me) on a rollercoaster of memories. In combination with the funny discussions between several characters, the expressions of love and sound advice from friends, it makes for a wonderful book, good for hours of pleasurable reading. Highly recommended!
Side Piece by Kelly Kay is a non-conventional romance between Tess and Alex. Both characters have established careers that demand their attention for weeks, and even months at a time. This type of demand leaves little time for a relationship.
After a one night of amazing conversation, and even more spicy times, Tess and Alex find themselves wanting to spend more time together.
Tess (FMC)⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Romance author
Alex (MMC)⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Political podcaster
Favorite quote of the book: “Our histories are littered with stories of women giving up their careers for the men they loved. It’s lovely to hear that in reverse.” -Tess
It was looking to be a five star read until the third act breakup. I cannot stand that in books!! Why can’t character just act like adults and talk shit out!!!
Thankfully Alex was able to get his head out of his ass before it was too late!
Talk about 2 ships passing in the night. Tess and Alex were major workaholics that had one incredible night that they didn’t want to end. They both traveled a lot for their jobs and were trying really hard to make it work. I really Enjoyed this book. I loved The insane chemistry these two had. I loved Their banter and I especially loved their friends. Both Tess and Alex’s friends wanted them together as much as they did. Can they make it work? Can they be there for each other when it really counts? This book was definitely a great sexy read! I would Definitely read another book by this author!
This is a new author to me, and I will certainly be looking out for her work in the future. This is Alex and Tess’s story. These two are both workaholics with Alex as a political podcaster, and Tess as a bestselling author. When these two meets in a hotel bar the chemistry is undeniable, and the dynamics of their relationship changes over time as is grows and develops, as they both ensure that there is time in their busy scheduled for meet. This is a well written story which is emotional, and with witty banter, which all leads to a humorous, entertaining, and steamy read. I was hooked and intrigued throughout, and I recommend for all readers.
Side Piece was my first read by Kelly Kay and I found it to be quite funny and entertaining. Tess and Alex are both workaholics and relationships are not something either of them have time for, the attraction between the two is undeniable though and clearly one night is not going to be nearly enough. How does being a side piece work when feelings get involved though? The story was fun and not like anything I’ve read before which was really refreshing. The sex scenes were hot and the chemistry between the characters was explosive. Alex and Tess were definitely made for each other. If you’re a fan of work relationships or contemporary romance then you should give this a read!
This was such a great book! It was so emotional, steamy and you can’t help be get invested into the story. Tess and Alex have quite the explosive chemistry as they can’t keep their hands off each other. I also adore their friendships with others, especially Mikey as he was so much fun, and his interactions often made me laugh. This story was thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable to read!
I received an advanced review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my fair and honest opinion.
Ok....this is a funny, cute but very crazy book. The banter between Alex and Tess is crazy adorable, and crazy sexy. The things they say and do are so sweet, funny and down right funny at times, but thier schedules drove me crazy and not good...I felt bad for fictional characters. I really did enjoy the oh so quick wit that Tess has. She's awesome!
You will need a fan to read this one--its hot!! These two meet up at a bar and there is no stopping them. Even with this being a political read, Alex's job is an analyst; politics is not discussed. I can't remember laughing so hard through a read. I mean busting out laughing. All the characters are relatable, younwill love Mikey; well you will want a best friend like him. I enjoyed this read so much, can't wait for the next one.
Just when I didn't know I could love your work more, I discovered I could and I do! This stand alone is wonderful -- it really is! This weekend, while buried in snow I managed to read 4 books of yours! Please don't ask to identify which one I enjoyed the most because I can't! I am so excited for #5 to hit my Kindle!!! I may have to put it down long enough to clean up the kitchen though. Lol. Thank you for sharing Side Piece!
The writing style was fantastic and the concept was original. Cheating on each other’s jobs with love. The chemistry and heat were fantastic and I thought Alex was a realistic character, but at times he heart my feelings a bit by sleeping with other ladies while they were broken up (not long stints). The scene where she catches him lying to her in the bar had me hooked clear to the end.
What an epic romance that is full of angst, super hot steam and some unexpected trauma. This book took me through the gamut of emotions which I loved. The steam was SUPER hot. Throughly enjoyed.
I laughed and cried. I love Kelly's writing and how I can get a sense of place from her descriptions. This love story is smart and grounded in real life experiences. I can't wait for her next book!
This is a great story. The characters are a perfect fit for each other, they go through their ups and downs. They have an emotional history but still find their way to each other. I really enjoyed this story.
