D.J. Doyle was raised by pot-smoking hippies and spent her days worshipping pagan deities in the HellFire Club and her nights watching horror movies and reading horror books. She now lives with her family in a treehouse, preying on unsuspecting travellers, and where she likes nothing better than coming up with ideas for new stories and plotting her next novel. Some of this might have been made up. To learn more about D.J. 3.5 stars. This was a really fun outing. Great, unique concept and a pretty straightforward execution, boasting a fast, yet balanced pace. Enough violence and gore, but not too much, either. Some of the dialogue from the priests had me laughing more than I probably should have. My only critique here was that it was far too short to fully explore the ‘event’ and how it altered the holiday figures. Didn’t need a ton more detail, but certainly a bit more could have been a great add on here. Still a very enjoyable way to spend a half hour on a Sunday afternoon.
As the synopsis suggests, we start this story in Ireland at a Funeral. But this is no ordinary funeral but in fact is for David Wall, notorious gangster known as the Sergeant. A bloody massacre of his family ensued and a force of pure evil brought forth by his widow's desire for vengeance. I love the way that Doyle incorporates a timeline for the reader to follow, from the massacre of 1988 to the very same day in 1994. But after the first blood filled action packed chapter, you know that something sinister is about to reawaken. If only Father Paul wasn't so blahzay about displaying a bloody nativity display. The Chapters have great pace and imagination with plenty of gore. It will definitely make you want to skip church around Christmas. It also brings in a demonic presence, I wasn't familiar with. I love when authors bring in a story full of life and that is a great reimagining, this is not your standard story for the holidays. Some bits will really have you wincing, as Doyle shows great detail in her violence and the ending was superb.
The Nativity takes a dark turn as a brutal act of violence leads to a curse that will leave one congregation fighting for their lives. This blood soaked tale is great for horror fans. Highly recommended
