This afternoon is dedicated to Otep Shamaya.

I am listening to her music and reading her poetry. You can follow along if you'd like, just click here for the Otep Mix on youtube: http://tinyurl.com/3nonf95 and/or go to lulu.com and purchase her writings in either hardbound or e-book format.

Labeling Otep Shamaya as an "awesome frontwoman" an "edgy vocalist" or a "fantastic writer" would be an overwhelming understatement. She's a commanding presence who seeks to truly make a change in the world through her voice in both mediums: music and writing. She is my most favorite artist of all time and if I ever met her, I would literally be speechless (something that doesn't happen very often).

Anyways, if you haven't listened to her music or read her writings ever, she's political - always has been, always will be - and if you don't like her views - tough shit. She's not just a pretty face even though she's absolutely georgeous, she has something very important to say, and we all need to be listening, just saying.

Some of the best poetry I have ever read. Otep has such an individual style and a really insane way of showing some of the harsh realities that happen behind closed doors. She is one of the only poets who can make such disturbing subjects sound beautiful in a dark and masochistic way. The illustrations in this book are really amazing as well. Her art, both her written art or drawings, is created in such an individual way and it cannot be compared to anything else. I was so inspired that i got a line from one of the poems in this book tattooed on my ribs.

I picked this book up recounting my hours of angsty teenage moments spent listening to OTEP the band, and my many attempts to emulate her as an artist while writing my own poems. I thought I would pick this up as inspiration as I am currently writing again.

As an artist I can appreciate her work. I like the unique imagery she uses in her writing, her illustration. I sort of enjoy the way she intentionally plays with the spelling of words.

This is truly irrelevant to the quality of her body of work, but I just did not feel connected to her as an artist anymore. I think this is mostly because I grew up, and I feel she is still spitting the same angry shit that she did ten years ago. It's her art form.

There isn't anything wrong with that, but it just isn't for me anymore.
