A couple of odd short stories with weird psychosexual vibes and consent issues.

The first is a love triangle between three neighbors. The boy, Shun, is dating one of the girls, Ichika, but the other girl, Ritsu, has fostered intimate contact with Ichika, her crush, by cleaning her ears for years when Shun isn't around. Jealousy causes the status quo to crumble and things get quite a bit creepy.

The second story is about co-workers in a little cafe. Akane has a crush on Erina, but when things don't do her way, she takes it out on poor Nakajou just for being a handy pushover. There are no healthy relationships to be had here.

No words can explain how AWFUL AND DISGUSTING this manga was. One star is generous of me because the only reason it’s one star is because I needed to rate it. I would give it ZERO stars and honestly I think the author is projecting. I don’t understand how this idea came about in someone’s mind. I thought this was gonna be a cute lesbian mango but NO. If I could delete any manga i’ve read from my mind it would be this manga. This made my jaw drop in the most awful way, this was a HIDEOUS idea for a manga. Please go to a therapist if you get horny from cleaning peoples ears and videos tape your friends moans. Don’t read this book unless you want to be traumatized, because how the FUCK did this become an idea. Please don’t read this and stay curious.

Not as consensual or romantic as I typically like, but it is a racier yuri title that doesn't feel as trashy as Citrus. (Which series I do enjoy; that's a statement not a judgement.)

Transparent Light Blue
🌸 SINOPSIS🌸

It’s rare that I come across a yuri title that I don’t like. But with Transparent Light Blue, I unfortunately found one.

This one-volume manga, written and drawn by Kiyoko Iwami, is made up of two short shoujo ai stories. The first part, which is the main segment of the manga, is about a group of childhood friends: Ritsu, Ichika, and Shun. The story concentrates around Ritsu who has a crush on Ichika. Although they are very close, Ritsu doesn’t recognize how she feels right away because they’re both girls.

Everything is fine and dandy until Ichika and Shun (who’s a guy) start dating. Their relationship makes Ritsu extremely jealous, and she begins to realize her romantic feelings for Ichika. Because she is hurting on the inside, Ritsu starts to act out, putting a strain on the trio’s friendship. Along the way, Ichika begins to notice Ritsu’s feelings and also starts to question herself.

On the surface, this isn’t a bad premise. As a queer girl myself, I find it both realistic and relatable. Coming to terms with your sexuality and falling for a straight girl can be very painful. I’m sure other queer girls out there can relate too.

However, there’s one aspect of this manga that essentially ruined the whole thing for me. The element was… I can’t believe I am writing this… pseudo ear sex. Yeah. Basically, Ritsu cleans Ichika’s ears with a cotton swab… which would be fine except the cleaning consists of Ichika moaning and saying things like “It hurts!” The art in these scenes is also suggestive. Yeah…

I’m not a yuri purist. I don’t mind sexual elements in yuri, but the ear thing personally weirded me out. The cleaning is supposed to be a metaphor, showing how Ichika trusts Ricchan more than anyone else. But the author could have used so many other (not creepy) analogies, such as an intense back massage or something. To be honest, I went into the story pretty blind, so I wasn’t expecting this surprise. The manga’s description does mention something about ear cleaning, but I never imagined it would be like that. (Maybe I’m just oblivious considering the cover art has Ricchan biting Ichika’s ear.)

There were some other things I didn’t like about TLB – mostly Ritsu’s character because she does some very questionable things. Yes, she’s a teenager who’s confused and in pain, but some of her actions are just… no. I always want girl x girl relationships in yuri to work out, but it’s hard to root for Ristu when she isn’t the nicest person. In the end, I just couldn’t take the rest of the story seriously after the ear thing and Ritsu’s behavior. I even tried reading it a second time, but I still felt the same way.

Believe it or not, I disliked the second story even more. It’s called Apron and focuses on a girl named Akane who is infatuated with a female senpai who works at the same café. Despite her feelings, Akane never seeks a relationship with Erina-senpai because they are “impure.” Instead, she keeps Erina on a pedestal.

However, one of Akane’s male coworkers, who has a girly appearance, kind of looks like Erina. In her desperation, Akane forces the boy to wear Erina’s apron and smells him, pretending he’s really her beloved senpai. I did not like this. Akane is more or less bullying and sexually harassing the boy. Even though there is a twist later on in the story, I found Akane’s behavior inexcusable.

Again, how are you supposed to root for a main character that’s a jerk? Every character is meant to have flaws – they’re human, after all – but this mangaka’s characters all seem to have major personality issues that make them difficult to like.

Perhaps both stories would have worked better if they were longer. There wasn’t much time for development. Ritsu’s and Akane’s actions may have been more understandable and forgivable if there was more of a backstory and time for them to show remorse. But there wasn’t any of that.

Sadly, Transparent Light Blue did not bring anything new or exciting to the yuri table. The ear thing, the characters’ behavior, and some other problematic elements made the manga fall emotionally flat. What could have been a heartwarming manga about finding yourself and falling in love… left me with a bitter taste in my mouth and the words “WTF did I just read?” resonating in my head.

There are two stories in this manga, and both of them are atrocious.

The first story is about two girls and a boy who have all been best friends since childhood. Now that they're teens, the boy and one of the girls begin dating, making the other girl feel like a third wheel. She is also coming to realize she has a crush on the other girl. The two girls have this little habit, where one makes the other clean her ears. She makes erotic sounds while they're doing this, which the other girl records and later tries to blackmail her with because it sounds very intentionally like a sexual encounter. Rather than get upset, this makes the girl realize her friend has a crush on her so she decides she'll dump her boyfriend and date the girl instead. And he ain't even mad.

Honestly, not to kink shame anyone, but this story was just gross. I don't get the ear thing, but whatever. To each their own. Though I have to say, when the one girl replaces the cotton swab with her mouth, there is a really disgusting amount of saliva drawn in the several panels that's going on. It's the blackmail thing that really turned me off. And the fact that the boyfriend didn't really react to getting dumped for the other girl makes the whole love triangle thing feel like a forced trope. The whole story, in fact, felt pointless and forced. There was nothing likable about any of the characters or the plot. It was just a very weird scenario set in a stereotypical, bland high school setting with multiple mentions of sporting events. Bleh.

The second story was somehow worse and twice as confusing. Two girls are crushing on the same girl, and they both decide to get hired on at the café where she works so they can get close to her. But she's dating the (male) boss. And he decides to mess with them by making one of the girls cross-dress and pretend to be a guy, and nobody knows about it. I am beyond bewildered by this entire situation because it had no purpose, except to confuse the other coworker who got hired on, because she decides if she can't have the girl she wants, she'll make the "boy" wear her apron with her nametag on it and force herself on "him" instead. So she begins sexually assaulting someone because she doesn't want her real crush to be aware of her "impure" thoughts. But when she discovers her crush is dating the boss, she decides she's not so "pure" herself and doesn't want her anymore. So she instead begins dating the cross-dressed character, glad to find out she's a girl after all.

I don't even know what to say. This whole thing was offensive and gross. The main character was very judgy and preachy about what was and wasn't "pure" in her almighty opinion. She indicated that her own belief was that same-sex relationships were "unclean" even while sexually assaulting someone, then decided her crush was "impure" for being in a straight relationship. I don't even get it. Hard pass on this one. I wouldn't pick up anything else by this author, either.

The main story here is the romance between two best friends Ritsu & Ichika. Ritsu is unaware of her feelings until Ichika begins dating their other childhood friend Shun. And we get an awkward love triangle. Shun is awfully good natured about it all and says since he loves Ichika he understands how Ritsu could too. The passion between our girls is expressed by ear cleaning – which is incredibly weird. Ichika allows Ritsu to clean her ears regularly, but would never allow Shun such intimacy and realises she loves Ritsu back. While I get the whole intimacy and penetration metaphor going on here, I honestly felt uncomfortable with the whole analogy – I just did not find it sexy. I also didn’t feel there was enough drama with Shun basically being ditched as his g/f realises she’s a lesbian. He takes it far too well and there’s not nearly enough heartbreak or difficulty.

The bonus story is about a waitress in love with an older co-worker. So much so, she steals the woman’s apron and gets the new cute junior waiter to wear it simply so she can rub up against him and inhale her crush’s scent! The love interest (owner of the apron) is in love and having an affair with their male boss and when our heroine finds out, she is heartbroken, despoils the apron and quits. She later encounters the young waiter shed abused only to find out that he is in fact a she (but had been forced to cross dress by their weird boss). She’s only worked there as she had a crush on our heroine. The two girls get together at the end. Another weird one that made me feel vaguely uncomfortable

2* well I guess it’s a step up from wanting to eat your crush’s pancreas or making their cremated ashes into a milkshake but still squick.

I never really tried reading any f/f romance. Not on purpose. YA doesn't have that many and the public library I visit is kinda limited. So although I was initially drawn in by the beauty of the cover I stayed for what I hoped would be a cute story.
This manga actually covers two different stories. Each is pretty short.
The first covers a childhood friendship that starts developing into deeper feelings when two in the group begin going out. I love rooting for the underdog and what isn't seen as a traditionally socially acceptable relationship.
Kissing with lack of consent is a big NO.
Although the friendship they had was pretty cute and they seemed to trust each other a lot. It was also interesting getting to see how even though the two friends were competing for the same person, they were still able to remain friends. Again since its really short we don't get more from the story but it was pretty ok.

The second story was definitely not what I expected but I definitely enjoyed it more. I am still slightly trash for love triangles and enjoyed the development and ending of this one a bit more.

This book was advertised on Seven Seas Facebook feed and so far with the exception of NTR, I have enjoyed everything I have read published by them so I scooped this up on my last B&N stop.

The book is actually 2 short stories. Transparent Light Blue is three chapters and I admire how the creator was able to make a cute story in such a small space compared to other manga Yuri books that get stretched out into several volumes. Also, I thought it was an interesting decision to include a male into the mix. Most Yuri doesn’t do this. I also found it interesting that these two girls intimate bond was formed through the act of cleansing one’s ears! Anyway...cute story and I enjoyed it.

The other two chapters are of a short story about teens working in a restaurant. Once again...cute story and I enjoyed it.

I would like to read more from this creator.

The art here was admittedly beautiful, but I didn't care for the weird ear cleaning as synecdoche for sex, the characters with nonsensical motivations or no personality at all, the lack of plot, the derivative love triangle element, the rampant romanticized jealousy.... What a bizarre one, honestly. It's also extremely forgettable, not gut-wrenchingly bad enough to hate for an extended period of time. Yawn.

Ehhh, I expected a cute little love story but it wasn't cute at all. In the main story, Ritsu acts jealous and entitled and does mean things to get Ichika.
The second story's protagonist is only a little better. A little. Characters don't always need to be fully likable but here nothing was to balance things out.
Iwami draws pretty nice faces but full-body shots were sometimes a bit wonky.

This one wasn't for me. We follow three high school kids that are best friends. Two of them are currently dating, however the third girl is in love with the other one. They bond over ear cleaning, which didn't do much for me. The art was really good, but I really just didn't like this one.

2 stars. Both stories were awful. First one has cheating and the second one the main character is toxic as hell. The artwork was nice but this was a big hell no for me personally. There’s no one to cheer for in either story.

Also the side story Apron was ugh.

This was extremely short. It was okay, I guess. Not a huge fan with how the first story was resolved and the second one was kind of weird.
