Jonathan Joestar vs Dio Brando, but the latter wants to make the formers life hell because some egotistical grudge and a thing to prove superiority? In the initial chapters you see him destroy his love life, even kill his pet but 7 years later become his friend but he has his own sinister motives. I loved this volume and the art is really good and the story flows really fast!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This book was quite good. We pick up in the 19th century England where a man named Brando saved a noble's life and thus after 7 years he sends his son Dio in the care of this "Joestar" family and the man there raises Dio along with his own son Jonathan Joestar aka Jojo. The first few chapters depict Dio trying everything to make Jojo's life hell first by destroying his impression with his father, taking his fathers, making everyone believe he is a snitch, then taking his girl Erina and that was the last blow and JoJo fights Dio for her honor and there is this animosity between them and we jump 7 years later whe they are in a game of rugby and Dio and him team up only to be later revealed he was duping him all along as he is after the Joestar's welath and more mysterious about that Stone mask are revealed which will play a big role in the second arc! A good read and the art wow in particular the shading and inking, just wow next level!!
Phantom Blood introduces us to the world of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and what an incredibly bizarre world it is!
Jonathan Joestar is a gentle young nobleman with a kind heart and good intentions. He vows to use his father's inheritance for good deeds and devotes himself to a life of virtue and selflessness. Everything changes when his father adopts the son of a dead man that once saved his life. Young Dio Brando wears the facade of a gentle nobleman just like Jonathan, but beneath this facade lies a power-hungry sociopath that abuses his step brother behind closed doors and seeks to overthrow Jojo's father to steal his inheritance for himself. A deadly rivalry that's been in the making for over a thousand years sparks to life as the conflict between Jonathan and Dio escalate to supernatural heights.
Phantom Blood is essentially a giant prologue to the actual meat and bones of the JoJo universe. It's written like an Agatha Christie Victorian murder mystery, but with a crazy fusion of thematic elements from the historical paranormal horror of The Mummy, the brute force action sequences of Conan the Barbarian, and the supernatural martial arts of Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball Z. This was a weird and fun story with a few genuinely shocking horror moments with a nice balance of romance, comedy and explosive action. I also like how it draws real historical figures into the story like Jack the Ripper and the knights of Queen Mary Stuart.
The writing definitely shows its age. I've heard a lot of people say that Phantom Blood is the weakest story arc in the whole series and doesn't do a great job representing the series as a whole, and so far I can see where they're coming from. The characters are ridiculously over the top which makes them exotic and fun, but most of them have little depth. The lore of the story is very interesting, but the actual plot of the series itself so far leaves a lot to be desired.
I look forward to seeing how much better the future arcs of this series hopefully are.

Wow. This is how it all started! Honestly, I don't know it it's because I've already seen the anime and read more manga, but I just loved it. Even if I like the other parts more... this is not bad at all. It holds such a special place in my heart!

Lord help me, every volume of JOJO up to 60 is sitting right next to me, as we speak, in a grand stack on the floor. Summer procrastination, whee! ' 'Phantom Blood' is the weakest arc,' some say. Whaaaa? Phantom sets us up for one of the greatest cross-generational love stories (strike out) ever told. The old school drawings are amazing. Highly recommend starting from the very beginning!
[Vol 1: In which Dio Brando comes into the Joestar home and starts to royally fuck up Jonathan's life, and Dio becomes intrigued by a mysterious stone mask hung in his adoptive father's house...)
It's interesting to see how much of a cult following JoJo has (I'm a part of this following admittedly) considering how lukewarm and cliche this entry feels. I'm sure as it came out in serialized chapters there generated some interest around what was to come, but as a volume of work, I would feel relatively cheated out of my money, not knowing what was to come. There's the set up for the JoJo/Dio rivalry, but it feels rote in its execution. Dio, of course, is an absolute psychopath. JoJo is an absolute saint. There's some turmoil in JoJo's development, but it kind of just jumps ahead when the real conflict and final blow is done to him.
ITS JOJO TIME. oh love it. love the art style. and love the man the myth the absolute HATER of dio brando. dude is SUCH A FUCKING DICK and bro we get so much more about danny. the fucking dog dude. ITS JOESTAR TIME
Jonathan Joestar finds his peaceful life as heir to the Joestar fortunes shaken when his father takes in orphan Dio Brando, who seeks to make his adoptive brother's life miserable and keep their eventual wealth all for himself - and the lengths he will go to leave Jo horrified for his and his father's life! Araki begins an interesting brew of tension and dramatics that builds in personality and intrigue at a steady pace. Will Jo be able to withstand the cruel nature of this conniving intruder?
I've heard of "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" SO many times before, and I got curious. (my friends quoted this manga several times before (e.g. "そこにシビれる!あこがれるゥ!"), and I got invited to an escape game featuring JoJo world, so I HAD to know what the deal is.) But oh god, what is this. I know the serialization started in the late 1980s, but the drawing (I had a hard time telling Dio and JoJo apart), the words and phrases characters use(the small ッandゥat the ending of the words... ew why), the unique onomatopoeia ("ズキュゥウウン" for kissing? what the actual fu*k)... they were all SO. CRINGEY. AS. HELL. Everything is so old-fashioned in a bad way. I've read mangas written in the 1970s and they were way better than this. ... and why is everyone always shoUTING IN THIS MANGAAAAA?
However, since this is only the very first book in the very long series, I will keep on reading. I wanna know the cultural references when I see one in the future. (And... I thought this series was about battles between people with superpowers called "stand"... so far the story is about two boys in Victorian-era England...)
I would've given this manga 3 stars, but I can't stop cringing and laughing at ridiculous onomatopoeias...so 2 stars. "It was ok." (which is not a bad thing to say about a book, come to think of it) ...okay, off to the next one!
