She is considered a "founding mother" of modern shōjo manga, and a member of the Year 24 Group (24-Gumi). She helped pioneer modern shōjo manga, modern science fiction manga, and BL manga. In addition to being an "industry pioneer", her body of work "shows a maturity, depth and personal vision found only in the finest of creative artists". She has been described as "the most beloved shōjo manga artist of all time."
Moto Hagio made her professional debut in 1969 at the age of 20 with her short story Lulu to Mimi on Kodansha's magazine Nakayoshi. Later she produced a series of short stories for various magazines for Shogakukan.
Two years after her debut, she published Juichigatsu no Gimunajiumu (The November Gymnasium), a short story which dealt openly with love between two boys at a boarding school. The story was part of a larger movement by female manga artists at the time which pioneered a genre of girls' comics about love between young men.
In 1974, Hagio developed this story into the longer Toma no shinzo (The Heart of Thomas). She was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1976 for her science fiction classic Juichinin iru! (They Were Eleven) and her epic tale Poe no ichizoku (The Poe Family).

Since I have done reading the 2nd volume of this manga, I started to understand more about the story...
Marjinal is basically the world of men>> adult men. There's only one mother that producing children (boys) and the center distribute them to each city or village.
But nowadays there's also less child bore by the mother an of course it's slowly caused worries among the men (adult). Will there be an extinction of their kin if mother stop bearing the children?
The children also known as iroko (before they really become adult) and men tried their best to get their own iroko. It's like having the heir if you have iroko.
There's still a lot of mystery about finally the world only filled with men, without any woman at all.

Kelar baca vol 2 ini akhirnya dpt pencerahan juga. Jadi, pada tahun 2300 itu Bumi sudah kiamat krn ulah manusia, dan tdk bisa ditinggali lagi terutama bagi wanita, mrk jadi tdk bisa hamil ataupun mengandung anak. Ini berlaku juga buat semua spesies mamalia yg pada akhirnya punah. Lalu para penghuni Bumi kabur ke planet lain dan membangun kehidupan lain di Mars, Bulan dll. Namun ada suatu company yg membuat project di Bumi yg dinamakan Marginal. Blm diketahui apa tujuan project tsb, dan company ini membeli sel telur para wanita di Bulan (berlega hatilah buat yg ga suka kisah incest krn ini ga 100% brocest, hahaha) utk dibuahi sperma para penduduk Marginal lwt rahim buatan *tebakanku benar, tapi tdk 100% krn tadi kukira sel telur dari single mother gitu, rupanya tdk*. Dan supaya bisa membawa antibodi dlm tubuh mrk, maka hanya pria yg bisa dilahirkan.
Tentu saja penduduk Marginal tdk tau apa-apa soal ini. Bahkan gaya hidup mrk masi baheula gitu, walaupun kadang mrk melihat helikopter lewat di langit, tapi mrk tdk tau apa2 soal apa yg ada di dlm pusat tempat Holy Mother dan para dokter bedah berada. Khas dystopia bkn? hehehe.
Jadi, krn Holy Mother terbunuh, ada sebagian penduduk Marginal yg mulai memberontak krn mengira kelangsungan hidup mrk terancam. Mrk tdk tau kalo Holy Mother yg baru sedang disiapkan para dokter asal Mars itu. Holy Mother yg baru ini dibuatin payudara wanita dan dipilih melalui seleksi ketat para pria Marginal yg memiliki gen xxy (dlm arti lbh feminin, lbh cantik, tdk mudah botak atau berkumis ketimbang pria biasa krn punya hormon wanita lbh byk dlm sel tubuhnya). Tentu saja Holy Mother baru ini hanyalah sebagai simbolis yg cuma ditampilkan ke publik sewaktu2, secara hidupnya yg pendek itu (maksimal usia pria Marginal 35 tahun) diperpanjang dgn cara menidurkan seluruh sistem tubuh sehingga akan memperlambat proses penuaan dan memperpanjang umurnya hingga 60 tahun.
Sampai akhir volume 2 ini, ternyata salah satu ilmuwan asal Mars menyelundup ke Bumi dan membuat 4 kloning manusia yg semuanya dinamakan Kira. Kira ini ternyata hermaprodit, dan alat kelaminnya bisa berubah mengikuti pasangannya. Dan sepertinya hanya pada pasangan yg "diakui" Kira sendiri. Ini masi blm jelas mksdnya diakui di sini. Krn pada saat Kira berhubungan dgn pria lain, penisnya tdk menghilang.
Nah, apa yg akan terjadi saat penduduk marginal mengetahui rahasia besar Pusat? Dan juga tentang Kira? Masih ada 3 volume, dan aku akan berusaha tdk spoiler lagi di next volumes, hehehe.
