All his life Tim Harper has had the ability to pick up peoples' thoughts. It comes at random and he has no way of controlling it. Tim calls this ability 'the knowing' but it is an unwelcome talent which only helps to distance him from his school friends.
One evening, while crossing the common, Tim finds himself looking into a strange and disturbing mind. The thoughts he reads make him feel uncomfortable but it's only later, when he hears that a girl from his school was murdered that evening, that Tim realises he was looking into a very disturbed mind indeed...
