Cast Iron Cookbook: Delicious and Simple Comfort Food

Rate this book
Cast iron is an original material that evenly holds even heat and lasts virtually forever. Yet there has not been a cookbook that lives up to cast iron’s versatility and timeless appeal. Until now. With this gorgeous, colorful entry into the field, Griswold and Wagner Cast Iron Cookbook combines the best of modern day cooking with the wonderful old-time feel of the Griswold cooking line of the 1800s. Recipes for and illustrations of collectible pans, from aebleskiver (Danish apple pans) to golfball, combined with fresh takes on the best in American cooking, make this an instant classic of a cookbook.

We’re spending an unprecedented amount of time in our kitchens these days, and readers want simple cooking that they can use everyday on a familiar pan. Cast iron cooking is versatile, healthy, and above all, easy. Here, are traditional recipes that have a modern twist, such as three pepper frittata, rosemary-garlic cornbread, barbecue shrimp and white beans, caramel apple tartine, and much more. Branded with the venerable Griswold name, this book is poised to make all other cast iron cookbooks obsolete.

This cookbook interested me because I just inherited a cast iron skillet that is well-seasoned and ready for action! The first thing that drew me to the book was the cover photo. That’s was exactly the type of homey, delicious dish I was looking to make in my new cookware. I ended up bookmarking several recipes and have been working through the list. I haven’t been disappointed yet. There is interesting history of cast iron cookware in the book as well, which makes for fun reading while waiting for your selected dish to finish. I recommend this cookbook. This cookbook is for the beginner to intermediate cook looking to expand her/his repertoire of cooking methods.

Great recipes

The recipes in the book are varied. There are a lot of recipes that are great even if you don’t eat meat.

A nice bunch of recipes

I have gone through the book reading the recipes, while reading the Crogue Monsieur recipe I was puzzled. Its a recipe for a plain grilled cheese, no egg involved in the recipe as written. The writer has left out the egg, that makes it a Croque Monsieur.
Once made you dip the whole sandwich in an egg and milk mixture as you would for French toast, cook and you have a fabulous sandwich that is much better than a grilled cheese. Makes me wonder what is missing from other recipes, the reason for 3 stars.
The care and maintenance of the cast iron pans is very good, I have purchased a skillet for my daughter for Christmas.

Interesting recipes. I'm excited, since I didn't think I should use cast iron on an electric range, but this book says I can so I will try! Just got a new cast iron dutch oven that I'm itching to cook in....

There are a few recipes in here that I'd make, but I can't say it's a book I'd add to my collection

This was a delight to read not only did it have some great recipes but it also offered a history on cast iron cookware and walked the reader through directives on how to care for & restore cast iron skillets!
