The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters.

Kristina Holbrooke is one of a kind. Daughter of vampires Maeve and Calder Holbrooke, Kristina is not a vampire. She has some magical powers; but tries as much as possible to live as a human. Over 130 years old, Kristina has been a widow for nearly a century and has vowed never to marry again. That is, until she meets Max Kilcarragh, a widower with two young daughters. Kristina and Max are drawn together. Kristina realizes that he is the man she has been waiting for her whole life. But outside forces may not let them stay together.

This is the last book in Miller's vampire series. I liked Kristina and Max, but Kristina's backstory did get a little boring. This story has two of the scariest villains I have read about. Little girl vampires Venetia and Canaan, are bloodthirsty savages. They've appeared in the previous books in the series, but this time we see just how deadly they are. I thought this was the best book in the series and a good finish to the series. My rating: 4 Stars.

Since the beginning, the heroine has wanted to ne normal. Her vampire parents are loving and caring but as a half human she's always felt adrift in life, not to live in the sea or on land- being neither human nor vampire but something in between. So she's forsaken her powers- for the most part, and is determined to live her immortal life as humanly possible. When she meets the hero she find him to be thee most kind and normal man so she's immediately drawn to him.

As a football coach, a widower with 2 young girls and a killer smile, he is the typical American Dad and she is fascinated by him. He's shy and unsure, and he thinks she's is worldly and enchanting. Still grieving his wife in a lot of ways even after 2 years, the hero has never felt the urge to reenter the dating game before-until he met her. How such a larger than life female could even consider him as a suitor is staggering but when he gathers the courage to ask her out, he's over the moon happy when she accepts. Their romance is easy despite the secret the heroine keeps from him about her origins and every second they spend together only solidifies their growing bond. But the heroine worries constantly about his safety and his children's safety. She can't bare to think of them becoming targets just by their association to her so she willingly accepts the aid of a warlock to improve her powers in order to be able to protect them. Yet still, she feels the need to confide in him about what she is, to give him the chance to leave if he's disturbed-though the thought of it breaks her heart. He's amazed by her powers and her story but he's very accepting of it. He don't run screaming or put much thought into at all. True is he's too far in now to quit. Even scared as he is to feel love again -knowing that what happened to his wife could happen to her- he can't help himself from wanting her. He calls her every day and even the shortest conversation is the best part of his day. But their easy life is about to become harder. And old enemy has resurfaced and he's put the hero and his family in danger. The heroine has lost her powers and become human so she can't even help. In the hopes of saving them, she accepts the warlocks offer of marriage in return for his help even knowing how her heart is breaking at the thought of losing the man she loves more than life itself.

It was the sort of book that could have easily gotten boring or monotone as not much happens in the way of excitement or drama but I still found myself utterly enchanted by the story. Well, perhaps not the story, but the characters. I adored the story of a vampire/human and a widowed football coach with 2 young daughters falling in love. And could the hero have been a more mellow and kind man? He was super understanding and totally nonjudgmental towards the new whole the heroine has opened up to him. Maybe he could have been a bit more...passionate or demanding? Yet he was beyond sweet and thee perfect sort of man the heroine needed after her disaster of a first marriage- even though he longed to be dangerous and something more than just a good guy. It really really made me want that kind of man, a man who risked his own fears because he loved you so much. Awesome book with a dynamic romance that warmed my heart.

This is the 4th book in the series and I so enjoyed them but wish there were more stories as they were so well told.

2/14/2011 read 2nd time

Kristina is the daughter of Maeve and Calder. Maeve is the only known vampire to give birth in the natural human way (vs turning one into a vampire and claiming it as a child of theirs). At 130 year old she don't look over 30.

Max falls for her the minute he sees her in her antique store but figures she would not be the type of woman to go for a high school football coach, he's wrong.

As always there are perils that come along with someone like Kristina falling for a mortal but the heart don't always do what is best.

It does end with me wanting another book, it was such a good series.

Decades ago I read the second book in this series, "For All Eternity" and remember really enjoying it. I suspect that would not be true today with the many paranormal books I have read since then. I would call this 'paranormal lite' in style, and recommend only for those who only casually read this genre - for any real fans this will come off as weak and 'undercooked'. The magical world is only lightly explained (partially because this is part of a series), and what there is of the magical world-building is mostly handwaving instead of meaningful details which could add to the plot. For me the most disappointing aspect is that the protagonist in this story didn't seem to learn anything of value, or gain emotional or intellectual maturity during their long life. She is treated as a dim child by her loved ones....because she acts like it. There was no emotional depth shown here in the dilemma of a (possibly) immortal person falling in love with a mortal. The relationship was based on instant attraction, not shared experience or intellectual connection.

London, Winter, 1872. Kristina’s story starting as a 5-year-old. She is the ½ vampire, ½ human daughter of Dr. Caulder and Mauve, Queen of the vampires.

Fifty years later, Kristina explores the attic in her childhood home looking for things to sell in her antique shop. She comes across a packet of letters she wrote to a friend during her first marriage.
One day, Max Kilcarragh, a recent widower, walks into her shop and decides to sell an ugly antique mirror for his sister. What starts is an enduring romance.

The story alternates between Kristiana reading the letters she wrote and her budding friendship with Max.

Footnote: 1) Es-ta-von, not Es-stay-von. Fa-cl, not Fa-seal. When I hear these I can’t help laughing even during a serious scene. You can Goggle how to pronounce words.

Fave scenes: Max and Barabbas’s encounter in the street, the little boy in Rio, Michael’s punishment and the twins fate.

I was unsure of this book when I learned it had Vampires and Warlocks woven into the storyline. As I read it became fascinating and I was able to let myself be taken along for the ride. This book mixes parallel universes, fantasy, spirituality and reincarnation and the continuing of lives which takes some skill to weave all of that together in a romance novel.
I also liked how the characters were interwoven in modern times as well as times of long ago. The comings and goings of Warlocks and Vampires and a wolf was an integral part of the story. I wished for the end to be my ultimate ending but it wasn't meant to be. That will mean different things to different readers as many would find the ending to be the perfect ending.

I finished this one just a few minutes ago....could hardly put it down once l started it. Like the previous three books in this series, the story was captivating from the start, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Seriously wish Ms Miller would consider writing another vampire series, because this one was just great! Keeping the entire series, would definitely read again, and recommend to anyone who likes Paranormal Romance involving vampires!

Good read

3.5 This was a good read considering the length. Enjoyed the story line. The only problem I had that jolted me a little was the change in points of view. There should have been breaks between the change as they were set up like scenes. There was also some words that either downloaded wrong or the authors spell checker screwed up. Also, nothing was even mentioned about the break in in Max's house.

It was an ok book and i did finish it. I am sure that others really enjoyed reading it but i just couldn't get myself to be engaged in it. Kristina doesn't possess the same traits as her parents- vampirelike. she fell in love with a normal person even though there was over a hundred years difference in their ages! This did have a nice romance feel to it.

Better than the first three.....

Much better than previous prequels. One irritating little habit of this author was the amount times, throughout the novel she had one of the characters, Max, "running his hands through his hair....lol....petty as it may seem it really gnawed at me. Not as repetitive, except for the hair, as the first three books. Truth be told I really liked Valerian.

I adored this series. My review is of all of them as I read them back to back. My only complaint is that she needs to write more in this genre. The books were full of romance, intrigue and wonderful storylines that made you connect with the characters. I love her western and contemporary series but this by far is my favorite of her novels.
