Some of the best Lovecraft adaptations I've seen anywhere. The artwork really complements the tales and the horror and for once makes them work in a visual form - a difficult feat.
Great graphic novel! Hernán Rodríguez did a marvelous job with these stories – keeping Lovecraft style alive through his beautiful art.
The stranger “It was better to catch a glimpse at the sky and die… than to live in that perpetual darkness.”
The road to knowledge is not an easy one, especially when you try to discover yourself. Dark, somber, with an unexpected ending.
The music of Erich Zahn A story about the power of music and how it influences us, providing unique experience, which sometimes, we are not able to repeat. Creepy but beautiful.
Nyarlathotep A story with multiple meanings: could be Lovecraft’s vision of Messiah’s myth, could be a political allegory, an ironical outline of a flawed society; or could be just a story with Nyarlathotep, one of the Outer Gods. Either way, shrewd one.
The Nameless City Some secrets are better left undiscovered…
The temple A submarine crew gets mad after finding a statuette and started drifting into unknown waters. And at the end of the journey something awaits to be discovered…
I don't normally buy translations when I get French comics but this was too gorgeous to pass up. It was a Spanish artists versions of 5 Lovecraft short stories. The stories he told were ones that I'd read before but mostly forgotten so it was like coming to them fresh. They were just gorgeous. His style suited the stories perfectly. He was able to get the perfect blend between the beautiful and the grotesque. Each story had it's one style and feel. The magnifican cyclopean cities, the frozen depths of the sea, the shabby flats with their beautiful music. He portrayed them all beautifully. I can't recommend this highly enough.
If you never read any of H. P. Lovecraft's works, this will give you a good idea of what its all about.
If you did read Lovecraft before, this will remind you of why he is a master of horror. This comics is creepy and twisted!
The artwork is very interesting. I usually prefer clear, clean lines with lots of details. This has lots of details, but only when it needs to have them. Most of the time, its broad, blurry messed-up lines. The end result is awesome! It contributes to general sense of something about this whole deal being horribly twisted and strange and just not right....Like really misshapen reality fragments breaking out somewhere near, just beyond our reach! It captures the feeling of Lovecraft's work really well.
My favorite was the first one about the outcast/stranger. Dude, was that twisted!
Narration wasn't that great, if you don't have a firm grasp on the H.P. Lovcraftian stories then you'll probably find yourself lost but it was decent for the most part.
