Shadow and Light

Rate this book
To see the light, sometimes you have to stay in the shadows.

Banished to Shadowland, Jeneca and the other Shadow Walkers have learned to adapt. They live in shadows and thrive where no one should. So when she finds two Light Walkers, she knows they won't last long on their own. But they refuse to leave until they find who they're looking her.

Jolsa doesn't want to be there. Shadowland isn't the place for light--or Light Walkers. The Shadow Walkers are nothing but savages that can't be trusted, but he made a promise to keep his best friend, Layli, safe. He'll do whatever it takes to accomplish that, even if it means going to Shadowland for protection.

Jeneca knows what it's like to have to hide, and she agrees to help--as long as the Light Walkers follow her rules. But even as both sides begin to depend on each other, secrets come to light and they learn that danger lurks in more than just shadows...

Aww SHADOW and LIGHT is so good! In this incredible world that Lanie Jordan has created, a line has been drawn, sides have been chosen, but then the unexpected happens. Light Walkers and Shadow Walkers are enemies, but that doesn’t stop Layli and her best friend, Jolsa, from leaving the light to enter Shadowland in search of a Shadow Walker named Jeneca. Layli is adorable and she can see the goodness in others. Jolsa is stubborn and believes things are the way they are for a reason, but his love and need to protect Layli motivate him. Jeneca is a no nonsense, I won’t hesitate to beat you down, type of girl, but she has a BIG heart. And let me tell you, their story is exciting!

SHADOW and LIGHT wasn’t only entertaining to read, but it made me stop and think. Do I believe I live in the “light” and treat others as if they live in the “shadows”? I hope I never do. A lot can be gained by reading this book. It’s sad the way people can be prejudiced against others who are different from them. Fear of the unknown isn’t an excuse to treat others cruelly.

On a less serious note, my heart went pitter patter and I giggled like schoolgirl. Well done, Lanie Jordan!

Lanie Jordan continues to amaze me; she never lets me down with her stories.
The main characters are fantastic. Our hero is a super strong female, but there is lots of action, so it's never girly or prissy by any means. The secondary characters are also super strong females or males with weaknesses, so that's pretty awesome. If I ever wanted to give any advice, it would be: don't forget to give the main characters weaknesses too. I'm actually kind of sure that they have them, but I can't think of them at the moment.
My favorite thing about this story was the setting. A magical fantasy world with two types of people and two types of powers, completely timeless and independent of any kind of modern setting. A love it. A stand-alone world with no questions about how it fits into reality? Awesome. I'm jealous of how awesome it is, actually.
I would be curious to know if there is possibly a sequel to this story.... what happens after the fact? Who REALLY becomes queen/ruler of the Light walkers? Integration of the two worlds? It seems like a lot would be possible, but I kind of like how it ended, leaving me wondering what happens next rather than just telling me. I love stories that end like that.
Well, done, as usual, Lanie!

I enjoyed reading Shadow and Light very much, the characters were great, the fantasy world was interesting and there was a nice level of action. Jeneca is a brilliant protagonist, she is very tough and can look after herself whilst at the same time being caring and kind-hearted. I loved that she doesn’t kill any Light Walkers that are after her as she doesn’t want to be what they say all Shadow Walkers are.

This book is very character and story based with an incredible world in the background that is just begging to be further explained. I found this book to be very unique and I loved that. The powers that the Shadow Walkers have are well explained and the fight scenes are really cool. The first ¾ of this book is very well written and the world building is good.

In my opinion what let this book down and stopped it being unbeatably incredible was the ending, well the things that were revealed near the end. Suddenly the dynamics between the two different peoples didn’t make sense to me anymore and things contradicted one another. It was a shame because up until that point it was a 5 star worthy book.

I would have loved to hear more about the history as well because some things are briefly mentioned that I would have liked to hear more about. This book has so much potential to be incredible; the idea behind it is brilliant and the story is great, it just needs a few tweaks.

I am incredibly sad that this is a stand alone novel! The world and characters entranced me from the very beginning and I so want more :(

The differences between the city world and the Shadowlands was amazing! I have not read a pure fantasy this beautiful in ages. The story was not bogged down with all sorts of setting crap to explain to the reader they were not in our world and it wasn't needed. It was just pure action and adventure... magic and mystery. So many fantasy writers today worry more about the world of their story than the story itself or the characters... that's wht has been killing pure fantasy as a genre.

Anyone who loves real fantasy will love this book. If you are looking for overly set stages or to be reassured you are in another world...look elsewhere. Otherwise enjoy this awesome story and join me in wishing there were more :)
