Will the tide of history keep them from giving their love a chance?
Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances! This love of books led to a desire to write. Lyn won prizes in high school and college for her poetry and, not surprisingly, Lyn became a history and English teacher. When she became a mother, she gave up teaching, and while raising a son and a daughter, she began working on her first novel. Then she wrote her second and third. Long years of rejection followed — as it does for most writers. Finally in 1997, Lyn got "the call." Her first book, Never Alone, was chosen to appear in the first year of the new Love Inspired line. Lyn has written many articles on writing and the emerging Christian Booksellers Assoc. (CBA) fiction market. In 2006, Lyn's book, Chloe, is a finalist for the RWA's RITA, the highest award in the romance genre in the inspirational category. Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.

Mariel felt forced to leave Germany after her father’s shameful death. But the only way she would be allowed to go to Texas with some of her other countrymen would be either as a wife or as a servant. So, Mariel signed on as a servant, and endured a grueling voyage from Germany to Texas. But when they get there, they discover a rugged frontier, with no shelter and huge amounts of rain.
Texas Ranger Carson Quinn is just looking forward to a hot meal, a hot bath, and a warm bed, but he couldn’t leave these immigrants just standing in the rain with no place to go. So he rents them a warehouse to stay in overnight and to store their belongings in and promises to take them to their land holding, but warns them it would be an even worse journey that the voyage, and that many would die enroute. Still, many of the Germans opted to walk all the way to their new homes.
Mariel wasn’t given much choice. She longs to be free of her cruel taskmaster, but doesn’t know quite how to get free. As Carson watches Mariel struggle to hold her head high, he longs to protect her—but war is brewing, since Mexico will not accept the U.S. annexation of Texas without a fight. What will it take for Mariel and Carson’s love to have a chance?
HER ABUNDANT JOY is the third and final book in Lyn Cote’s Texas Star of Destiny series. I have read the first two books in the series, but HER ABUNDANT JOY stands alone. I think this was the best book in the series.
I enjoyed getting to know Mariel and Carson and the trials of living on the historical Texas frontier. One had to admire the courage of both the rangers and the settlers. This was a good series, and if you like historical fiction then HER ABUNDANT JOY is not to be missed. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $12.99. 294 pages.
Her Abundant Joy is a very satisfying conclusion to the Texas: Star of Destiny series. I loved learning about this segment of history, and I loved the characters and the way each overcame adversity to be the man or woman of faith and honor they were destined to be. Lyn Cote has created a family saga that was fun and informative to read. The ups and downs and uncertainties of frontier life can bring out the best and the worst in people, and it was refreshing to read about a family that shines among the best. I highly recommend this trilogy - my only complaint was that I had to wait so long between books. Now that they're all out, you can read them one-two-three and be totally swept away.
I won this in a goodreads giveaway. Her Abundant Joy was a nice historical romance story. The romance between Carson and Mariel was sweet and had me smiling sometimes. It was very well researched. I really liked the ending. There were a couple surprises that tugged at my emotions and made me feel sad and then glad for the characters. If you like historical fiction, I would highly recommend this book.
Overall I was really satisfied with this series. I liked the fact that it had a "saga" like feel to it following Dorritt and her family through over 20 years, including her son Carson in this, the final book in the Texas Star of Destiny series. One of the reasons I liked this book was the time period and the setting, Texas in the 1840s. Most Christian historical fiction is either set in the West in the late 1800s or it's set in Regency England while I like those settings it's nice to change it up every once in a while. If you're a fan of Texas history and Christian romance, I recommend this book and the entire series. Even though it is a romance I think that Her Abundany Joy could be read and enjoyed by the men out there as the author allows the reader inside the hero's head, Carson Quinn. A nice story, not perfect but still enjoyable.
I received my free copy from the author through a Goodreads Firstreads giveaway.
I wanted to like these books more, but I couldn't. This one was too similar to book number two, and all three have recurring themes in the plots. Cheesy things, like the men being so glad their women weren't around to see the war. Then the women show up and they are mad. Or the kidnapping and helplessness of the women. It started to grate me in book three. It was weak in comparison to similar books I have read, and if you are interested in this genre I recommend These Is My Words by Nancy Turner. Now there is a sassy strong Texas woman!
Awww I'm sad to see this series end! Beautiful ending that wrapped up nicely. This book was more romance-y and more kissy than the others and less adventure so not my favorite but still good and a nice ending.
its hot outside. so perfect for reading inside. This ebook from the local library allowed me to read this now even though published 13 years ago. Nevertheless, the historical factor cannot change. The whole Texan, Mexican, Indian, anglo whites is a mix of statehood. This story had couples: Quinn and Doritt (parents) Doritt's sister Jewell and Henri own a plantation and have slaves. Children Carson, Sugar, Remy, Blanche, Erin. (Blanche marries Nevin) (Sugar marries Emmillo) Indian wars. Mexican wars, Texan wars, US war. (skills to kill, protect, hand fight, weapon fight) Rio Grande River, Colorado River and more rivers where the invisible line made territories. German immigrants. All interesting scenarios to make history with a tale or two.
