Borrowed from the school library as a teenager, this is the book that got me into reading crime fiction. Deftly and intricately profited, the story unfolds mainly through dialogue and conversation. Seeming so sophisticated when I first read it, it now seems to lack the edge of Richard Stark et al who I've discovered since. But still a book that is special to me - especially as I now remember scenes set at Wolfie's in Miami Beach and Ave B in NYC - both places I've visited on my travels.
