Neema would much rather deal with demons of any kind than a human ghost, especially the ones that can’t seem to let things go. That’s probably why she should have sent Jasen’s call straight to voicemail. And she should have never gone to that house in Queens. Now she has to deal with a ghost, a girl who calls demons and the demons themselves.
L. L. Farmer, a native Floridian, attended the University of Florida where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English. After teaching in her hometown of Orlando for nine years, she relocated to New York City where she taught and lived for nearly a decade. In 2014, while raising a small child and teaching high school, she earned a Master's degree in Creative Writing. The next two years were spent on researching and writing two novels. The second of the novels is the recently published Slave Ship Rising (2017). She is currently preparing to publish the first book in her butt-kicking heroine series.
A couple of months after the events of Black Borne, and Neema has once again jumped into the deep end without a life jacket. A new case isn't what it seems, again, and Neema has to connect past and present to solve them both. This time, she's chasing a restless, vengeful spirit with an angel, a demon, a cop, and an eager for retirement human companion. Pieces of her past continue to interfere with her work as she slowly realizes that her unchoosen path was foist upon her for reasons other than what she thought.
Totally fell for this book. It's like a trail of breadcrumbs that keeps you hooked, eager for what's next. The way it keeps you locked into the story is genius. And let's talk about the FMC, Neema—she's the epitome of badassery. Watching her throw down, grow, and tap into her next-level powers was everything. I've got this gut feeling there's a whole lot more coming for Neema, and I'm here for it.
Loved the historical facts weaved into this fictional tale, especially about the real estate market for black people, more specifically black vets. Love each story is a mystery.
Alastor is great comedic relief. Really hope Neema finds an immortal love interest.
Soooooo what all can Neema do??? She is not the average Demon Hunter she is so much more. This series is one of the best series I have read. Neema should sit down with Jason and explain some things to him because he is always going in blind. I hope Alastor is more friend than foe. What is going to happen with Tala?? And where is Priest?
With week after week continuing to pass as Neema doesn’t hear a word from Baal, she’s not sure if she’ll get the answers she desperately craves. When a call from the police informs her about a possible demon possession of a robber, Neema is confronted with memories from her early beginnings as a Demon Hunter and it terrifies her. The world of demons, spirits, and angels continues to become more complex by the minute and she isn’t sure what to do since she might even be becoming cordial with the demon living in her backyard.
Even though I know the details of this series does not stick with me all the time (Carmen is a good example of a detail I just didn’t remember), it has taught me so much. The changes in timeline through the different eras of America and the struggles black people have faced during each time period have created excellent conversation starters for me and help me to better understand the black community. I love the ever growing world the author creates and the vast amount of world building that is being incorporated with connections to different types of mythology and religious beliefs. The role Neema plays really intrigued me especially when they started talking more about what her role as a demon hunter was. Definitely excited to pick up the next book in the near future.
I like the Warrior series, but I gave the book three stars because I just don't like Neema. If it wasn't for others constantly saving her she would have been dead a long time ago. She's almost 300 years old but still behaves like an 18 year old. She does not stop to listen. I've noticed that whenever Alastor or even an Angel tries to tell her the full extent of her power she stops them and dives into situations unprepared. Then she blames Mawu for not teaching her. She knows next to nothing about demons she been hunting for centuries. I'm giving this series a chance because it reminds me of the late L.A. Banks vampire hundreds series. However, that character really was actually a kid. I'd like to see the series continue because I love Alastor, Baal, and Rains.
This second book in the series is a wonderful follow-up. It answers questions from the first book while creating more of a plot line. I'm beginning to sympathize with demons and villans....is that right? Lol either way I appreciate a character so well developed you feel complex emotional attachments. Cannot wait to grab the third book and see if any of my predictions ring true!
This book is a fantastic follow up to Black Borne - Warrior Slave Book 1. The whole series is bang-up. It's one of the only series to be able to integrate slavery into modern-day life and politics in such an unobvious, natural way. It's very much like Octavia Butler's Kindred in that it's very matter-of-fact without any preachiness. The plot keeps moving and it's a satisfying read.
This books gives you a glimpse into the past and pulls you to the present. The cultural references are intriguing and look forward to to reading up on them. I am glad to see the past and future tie so well and resonate so true. I am moving on to the next book in the series and can only get better.
I loved this just as much as I loved the first the book. However, I can’t give it the 5 stars it deserves because of the errors. I can give it 4 stars though because the errors have been significantly reduced.
I absolutely love how this series weaves together classic fantasy storylines with important and often overlooked elements of Black history. This book’s focus on the harmful effects of redlining and the rarely discussed fact that the GI Bill only helped WHITE soldiers returning from WWII to purchase homes were particularly skillful. All the whole battles between angels, demons, humans, and ghosts keep the reader entertained and engaged. Good stuff!
The series, so far, is pretty good. What drew me in was the historical aspect along with the supernatural. Having Neema, whose been cursed by the vodou, fight demons for 3 centuries practically, and she's still discovering who and what she can do is intriguing. This book moved faster than the first one and It held my attention more. I look forward to reading more about Priest and his journey.
I learned thing about my people history, that I have never known and at the end of your 1st book u gave reference to other authors too look into to learn more. Now this is where my BUT, comes in. You repeated alot of your sentences and characterization in book 1 and 2. I believe it was done to lengthen the book but, it became very annoying to me the reader to have read the same thing over and over.
Neema’s story keeps getting better. I came across this author by accident. Was drawn in by the cover & title of book 1 and became hooked. I love well written stories by Black authors (of all genres) that tie historical information into their narratives. L.L.Farmer does that very well. I’m glad this is a series so I can start on book 3 now.👍🏽
This series does it for me! It combines AA history, action, and paranormal is a neat little box. The mentions of Slavery in NYC have me ready to do more research. The concept of the human and spiritual realms existing simultaneously gave me fodder for thought. All in all a well written book, I can’t wait for book three. Where is Priest?!
Each book gets better and better! The black history included is amazing as the stories and struggles of black Americans deliberately don't get passed on accurately! I recommend this book for every black American! Our history is tragic but our ability to survive despite all odds is the ultimate example of courage, strength and resilience.
I definitely love this series so far. I am a fantasy author myself and I am just learning about L.L. Farmer books and I love them. Reading Neema's character as it develops is very entertaining. I love the flow of the stories. I just finished Book #2 and will start on Book #3 of this series. I'm excited
This was a great read can not wait until the next book come out. This was and still education to know that they help stared the gettos and it was hard to get in other neighbors
If you love paranormal with strands of historical points, this will be an incredible read. I really enjoyed book 2 so much and can't wait for MORE. This can easily be a 10 book series.....I hope!
I am hooked to this series and every by this author. I love that even though the genre is urban, the author hasn’t strayed from real substantial literature! Come on with the next book, some of us are impatiently waiting!!!!
Continues to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer if Buffy were immortal, Black, and born in the US pre-Civil War. Really needs editing (I'd recommend just skipping the first chapter entirely), but the substance is tremendously fun.
Couldn't put this book down! I'm so grateful I discovered this series! L.L. Farmer is magnificent with the rich historic teachings within her writings and to add biblical references...I'm here for these books! 100% all in!
I didn't think I would enjoy this series. I don't know much about L.L. Farmer, however, I must say most of ny downtime has been spent engrossed in this series. I cannot wait to see if Priest is alive and who he really is...with his sexy self.
Your writing is amazing, I also love the bit of history added. You have me so enthraled that I don't want to work. Keep up the passionate tales, and I will continue to get lost in your world.
I'm hooked. One mystery solved and another slowly builds and creeps up. On to the next in the series. I love that even with the flashbacks the storyline still flows and interconnects.
