Duck Dynasty clan’s pastor brother Al (who was mostly absent from the show) and his wife Lisa provide a remarkably transparent account of their brokenness and sin and God’s power of forgiveness.

Based on theology alone, I’d give this book 1-2 stars as the authors’ seem to conflate baptism with salvation. I could not help but notice that this seemed to compound the problems in people’s lives as their lives showed little evidence of new life despite the assumption that salvation was present. That’s not to say that Christians cannot fall into terrible sin (just read the Bible) but it adds another layer.

That being said, their actual decisions to act in desperate forgiveness are the real teaching. Their willingness to openly declare their sin and fully forgive one other is refreshing. They know they are broken people (just like me) and know that as a recipient of Christ’s forgiveness they are required to forgive others. In that way their actions exalt God, and I’m glad I read their story.

I purchased this book on a whim because Al & Lisa were at the local bookstore signing copies of this, so I had the unexpected joy of chatting with them for a few minutes-- small chitchat about weather, traveling and their niece Sadie. They also shared their heart behind writing this book and their desire for people to embrace mercy and forgiveness.

This book shared their story of desperate forgiveness-- each of them individually as well as issues within their marriage. They shared other people's stories-- but the one common theme was the power of and need for mercy and forgiveness and how it sets you free. And not just forgiveness of other's but also of self.

When signing my copy of this book-- they each cited a verse:

Al's was Luke 7:47 "Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven-- as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."

Lisa's was Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you."
