Life in the Commonwealth of Sutherland is far from content.
The Regnate rules his land with an iron fist, and has done for 25 years. Exactly the same as the previous Regnate. And many more before him. Every 25 years, the heirs of the eight High Houses battle to the death to earn the crown of Regnate.
After a brutal tournament, John of the House of the Red Dog emerges victorious. John is a fair, noble and compassionate human being. Surely he will not allow the people to suffer the same injustices as his predecessors. Yet, after a couple of days, all the old principles are clearly there to stay.
John’s brother, Tom, cannot believe his brother is that cruel. When he is finally granted an audience with the new Regnate, he is shocked to discover the grisly truth. Determined to unveil the truth of what has happened to the Regnate, Tom refuses to succumb to his predicament, and finds some unlikely allies in his quest.
Will their combined forces be able to save their Commonwealth? Or is the power they face too great to overcome?

R M Dorn is a pen name. The author has enjoyed a busy and varied career, and a number of interests, including reading, theatre, art, local history and gardening. Following up on her life-long passion for fantasy, mythology, and science fiction, she now spends most of her time writing. With a tendency to get restless, and a liking for doing up houses, she spent twenty years moving at frequent intervals, but within a confined area. She has now put down roots, and has two homes, one in East Devon, for summers by the sea, and the other in West Sussex for snug winters by the fireside.

I love fantasy, and my stories are influenced by my interest in myths and the history if magic.
The sense that there is another 'somewhere', a secret world, fractionally removed from our own, that you might enter by magic, accident, or chance, is very compelling.
I'm in the process of making a change of genre into historical fiction, and hope to have a new book out soon.
