If Walls Could Talk

Rate this book
Louis Stan has always been an outcast. There is no denying that the walls he has put up between himself and other people are the cause of this but being gay hasn’t helped either. However, being an outsider isn’t his only problem.

Louis has always tried to see the light, even in the darkest times, but with each passing day, it gets harder. He becomes more closed off, not letting the light reach him.

But sometimes a voice is all we need to hear.

As the soft voice of a caring boy slips through his bedroom wall, Louis finds himself seeing little bits of that light again. But with it, Louis notices the darkness from the past, that he tried to move on from, starts to become illuminated.

Will this mystery boy help Louis bring down his walls, or will the past continue to haunt him?

Stop me if you've heard this before:

This was a really appealing idea for a novel and a piss-poor to mediocre execution.

While I love the concept of a secret, between-the-walls-of-two-adjoining-apartments, budding romance, the whole getting-to-know-you-before-getting-to-see-you intrigue, it doesn't work so well if the main character is so self-obsessed he can't asked his close friend who walks him to school everyday if she's dying. Because, after all, it's his and only his happiness that matters.

Deliver me.

Loved it...except the end!

I got this not expecting a lot but was blown away from the character development and storyline. I thought this was a great YA story and I really liked the MC but the ending felt too rushed to me. There was so much development for 90% of the book I just don't understand why the ending was slapped on at the end. Also, "days turned into weeks turned into months" really...how can I connect to that in a story!!!!

Unexpectedly Brilliant

I snagged this when it was free and forgot about it, today when scrolling to find something to read I accidentally opened this. I'm so glad I did; this was a truly poignant, emotional read. I absolutely loved Louis, he was such a complex and compelling character. A heartbreakingly good story.

Repetitive

Story line was good characters were great but the repetitive narration got on my nerves. I didn’t need to hear the same thing 3, 4 or 5 times. Not sure if the author was just trying to reach a word quota or what.

Be prepared to cry. And laugh. And cry while smiling.

There are some things that i question. Like why didn't Louis try to intervene before she overdosed? But it does say that he tried before and it just didn't help. Things got better but it was still bad. So I questioned some things because I don't know how I would have reacted if I was in that situation. I can't understand especially when you don't have any other blood related family to turn to. You have a chosen family but it doesn't always mean they'll be there for you depending on who you've chosen. Especially if the law works against them in some situations.

This review sounds very discombobulating.

The previous statements/questions were the only query I had with this book. It was a beautifully written book but I was sad the details on Louis's background were vague and I think that was on purpose to make it more real in a way. To make it seem he didn't want to think about them so it never came up in the book/ Louis's thoughts. But it also made it harder for me to understand why he didn't try to get more help for his aunt.

I absolutely loved this book. Loved it! Louis' character is so beautifully written and the struggles he faces are so real, and the way he reacts to them is, well, as if they're actually happening to him. There's no magical way out of the bad situations he gets into, and you have to stay with him as he figures it out.

The development of Louis is another thing that shines in this book. A reserved, closed-off character that we see find a way to show his own vulnerabilities.

If you're looking for a great book to read. You don't need to look any further!

Just finished this amazing story, and yes it's amazing. I love everything about this book but what I really love is the characters. To me, I felt like I could connect with them, especially Louis, such an interesting and lovable character.

It's beautifully written and each chapter will give you something to either cry about or be happy about. It's truly an amazing heartbreaking story. I highly recommend reading it :3

Keep up the fantastic work

This could be true.

If you are choosing this book to read I want to tell you about my experience. I found myself wanting to quit the book the first few chapters. I was feeling so down reading about Louis. He was having a very difficult life. I didn’t quit though and as I continued through the book I found it to be a very enjoyable story, though since it was a story about Louis it has some very sad parts still stuck with it and you will be like me, looking forward to book 2. I suspect that there are some real life experiences written about in this story.

Just Amazing!

Let me quote Rudyard Kipling. “If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
Just a beautiful novel about dealing with one’s own issues and discovering to include others in your life.

Excellent tale

This story is sympathetically written and explores the problems of a teenage gay boy learning to cope with loss and a certain amount of self doubt. It explores the realisation that letting others through the protective walls will help both yourself and some of those you let through.

I loved the book so much! The characters were incredibly well written and the relationship between Louis and Isaac is so cute but also very intense, i don’t really know how to explain but it was amazing. The story overall was very nice paced and interesting, the author is also incredibly amazing and made this book very memorable.

The first third of the book is very good, but then everything becomes bad. The impression is that the author was just tired. The ending of the book is just a disaster. It's a pity.

This book is delightfully sad. All of the heartbreak is worth it, took me back to my emo boy youth.

The snark is awesome. The upside is beautiful.

I want a sequel.

A Hidden Gem

I, honestly, wasn't going to read this book. I scored it a while ago when it was free on Amazon, and I didn't think twice about it. However, scrolling through my library, looking for something to read, the cover just caught my attention, and I thought I would give it a go.

I am so glad that I did.

The way these characters were written was so real. It was as if they were real people that were about to jump straight from the pages. The dialogue, for me, was a stand-out point in this book. Yes, yes, everything in this book was great, but the dialogue was something else. The teenagers in this book, acted as teenagers would. The conversations they had were seemingly ripped straight out of a high school. Pair that with the emotions that you can feel within some conversations, and you've got an author who really knows how to make their characters speak.

And let me also point out another thing that drew me in about this book. This a coming of age story about a gay teenager who has been through a lot, and closed himself off from everything and everyone. From the number of books I have read, the main focus as to why the MC is like this, is because they were bullied for being gay.

Not this one.

While in the beginning of the book, we see Louis get called a derogatory term for being gay, it's made very apparent that being gay isn't the reason they're picking on him. It's because he chooses to put himself away from everyone else, making himself an outcast. It's very obvious he has done it to himself, and they way it is written and developed, and how Louis character is developed from it, is something I will praise this book for over and over again.

I could go on and on and on about how much I love this book and why, but I won't. I'll stop myself and implore anyone who reads this review to read the book themselves.

I usually try to steer of books that are the sole book of an author, but I am very glad this one caught my attention, and I truly hope another book is on it's way soon!

I usually don't give book reviews cuz it's hard to put my thoughts altogether but this book was worth the effort so i did it.

I love the way how the author took the time in building the personality of the main character. It made me understand and relate to him more as a teenager myself. I also love the other characters. Also the concept of friends and family were carried out so well.

The story was so emotional but at the same time so light. The emotions went through my heart but not to the point that it would drag me down or make me feel bad/worse. The snarky personality of the characters helped the story not to be too depressing(i personally prefer less depressing stories). It was all so real, beautiful and heartbreaking.

And how the author managed to bring the two main characters was so unique. There's a sense of thrill and mystery. The author pulled off a lot of surprises and they never disappoint. The love people went through during their teenage years kind of concept was so on point. I had a hard time stopping myself from screaming cuz they're so adorable.

All in all, it was an amazing story. Everything about this book is amazing. This would go down to the list of my most favorite books. And not to mentiom that i cried so hard. I didn't expect myself to cry that hard. Anyways, it was worth reading. No regrets.

If Walls Could Talk. A Title very fitting of this book. As a first book from this author I, honestly, wasn't expecting a lot. I've been let down before so I kept my expectations low, but I still wanted to give it a fair try. I have no idea if that was the reason this book blew me away or not, but I can say with certainty, that I loved this novel. The complexity of the characters and the arc of Louis that we get to see is brilliant.

The only problem I have with this book is right at the end we're told the story will continue and yet there is no sequel yet and I'm not sure how much longer I can hold my breath!

I loved the idea of meeting someone through a wall. While I admit... I was always pronouncing "Louis" the wrong way in my head throughout the book, it was quite a spectacular read! Louis is very relatable and the way he reacts to his circumstances is just... realistic! This story didn't feel fiction to me, but more like I was following inside the head of a real person. I love books that can pull me in and make me forget that I'm reading a story. I was sad when the book ended, but I heard rumours that there will be a second book and I'm looking forward to it!

I run my own business and don't get a lot of time to read. When I do read, the book has to grab me within the first chapter to keep me occupied. This book GRABBED me. I couldn't put it down.

I cannot wait to read more books from this author!
