Malone Summers 'has what it takes' to ride horses to big wins in the rough and tumble world of rodeo. Once young and headstrong, she’d chased her dream with a wild rodeo cowboy destined to break her heart. Now she’s riding high--until she finds a frightened young stowaway named Joss in her rig, and the murders of rough stock riders begin.
Cade Delaney has a past heartbreak of his own. He’s ready for a second chance with the only girl who ever turned his head or stole his heart, but while Malone is a risk-taker in the arena, she’s not willing to put her heart on the line again when Cade reappears in her life.
Trouble, the sleek and talented black cat detective, finds himself in the world of rodeo and murder when he takes on the job of guarding Malone against the mounting danger around her. Young Joss is connected to the murders, but how? Trouble has to help the humanoids determine what role Joss plays in the dangerous events and then help them see the truth their hearts fight against.
Susan Y. Tanner continues to blend her passion for horses with her passion for writing. In Trouble in Summer Valley, she introduced readers to the rescue horses of Summer Valley Ranch where they prove their worth in therapeutic riding. In Turning for Trouble, her own rodeo experience brings that rough and tumble world to life. Her third romantic mystery, Trouble in Action, showcases the risky profession of stunt riding while giving a glimpse into historical reenactments. A Whisper of Trouble provides a glimpse into a talent practiced by few...the art of horse whispering. Published by KaliOka Press, these romantic mysteries feature a super-sleuth in the form of a black cat detective. They are part of the Trouble Cat Detective series written in concert with some very talented authors.
Ms. Tanner's five historical romances--Highland Captive, Captive to a Dream, Exiled Heart, Fire Across Texas, Winds Across Texas, and A Warm Southern Christmas (a novella)--have been rereleased by Secret Staircase Books, an imprint of Columbine Publishing. All were previously published by Leisure Books.
Turning for Trouble by Susan Y. Tanner was a fascinating addition to the Trouble series. I didn't know anything about rodeos before I read the book so it was fascinating to learn about the working side of the rodeo business.
The plot was quickly paced and pulled me into the story from the first chapter. Trouble is one smart detective and his skills led both Cade and Malone in pursuit of not only a murderer but also the sad and all too real world of human trafficking. A cozy mystery with a touch of catitude and romance makes this one a perfect read in the afternoon.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.
Well I've just finished Susan Tanners's book Turning for Trouble. I don't know what to say. I'm going to start with book 1 next because like I said I never manage to start at the beginning of a series. Susan has done a fabulous job of connecting both her books to make it seem like one continuous story. I hate to say this but I'm glad she branched out into a different genre because romance of any kind is not my forte. She did such a fabulous job one these 2 books that I really hope that the other authors can keep up with her. Trouble is fabulous and the way she keeps the character Joss, who is in the onset of the story to the background is great theatrical work. You keep on wondering when her story is going to take the forefront. Fabulous job I just hope the other authors can keep her on a roll. That is unless she is writing under a different name. As far as I'm concerned they have a lot to live up to OR she just raised the bare. Keep to this ganre Susan you raised the bar. Cheers Lynn🇨🇦
Susan Y. Tanner is back for her second book in the charming, but suspenseful (and romantic) Familiar Legacy series featuring Trouble, the black cat detective. Just as in her first contribution to the series, “Trouble in Summer Valley,” Tanner has a winner with her newest: "Turning for Trouble."
In “Turning for Trouble” (Familiar Legacy Book 7), Tanner takes readers on quite a ride. There’s the dust, dirt, sweat in the behind the scenes of a rodeo, and there's murder, mystery, topical issues, plus romance—and Trouble the black cat. The series, for any of you that might not know, has seven books by different authors. While all books share Trouble, the black cat detective, the setting, style and plot are all the creation of the individual author. Tanner, perhaps best known for her historical fiction, brings her own knowledge of horses into both of her Trouble books, giving each a warm and accurate you-are-there feel to them.
In “Turing for Trouble,” the romantic suspense starts quickly. At a ranch wedding, Cade Delaney, the new Director of Operations for the Twin Circuit Rodeos and a man whose height gives him an advantage, turns just as another guest--a woman-- steps forward, brushing against him. He rests his hands protectively upon her as they stumble into each other. At once, he recognizes her--Malone Summers, the one great love of Cade's life, but a relationship that failed them both. Tanner captures the poignancy of the moment with sensual, lyrical prose: "He saw not the woman she'd become but the girl she had been. ...And he let her go, once again, because that was what she wanted."
Malone, a spirited woman barrel racer, leaves the ranch the morning after the wedding--striving to avoid further contact with Cade. Unknown to her, a teen girl hides away in Malone's rig, along with Malone's horse, Jaz. Trouble, the black cat detective, sees the girl hop into the rig, and jumps in after her to protect Malone. But to his--and the girl's dismay--the hatch slams shut, trapping both Trouble and the girl.
Two hours later, Malone pulls her truck and trailer rig into the yard at her late grandparent's farm. There, she finds not one, but two surprises in her rig: the black cat she soon recognizes as Trouble and a frightened young girl named Joss. Against her better judgment, Malone invites the girl to stay with her. The bruises on Joss--and her look of fear--forewarn Malone of danger, but she can't turn the girl out. A threatening phone call only raises the stakes.
Something evil is happening, and brave and resourceful though Malone is, she needs help. Enter Trouble, with his superior cat intellect, sassy outlook, and crime solving skills. But don’t overlook Cade, the cowboy who once broke Malone’s heart, and his role in the adventure. Once he hears the first hint of danger to Malone, he races after her to help.
And young Joss, who confesses having stowed away on Malone's rig since a rodeo in Louisiana, is more deeply involved than either she will admit or that Malone and Cade can understand. Malone--and Trouble--know the girl is "running way from something very mean and ugly." But what?
The plot, the characters, the romantic suspense, and the air of realism make this book shine. Trouble's charming, erudite voice and his strong role in the action also make for a riveting tale in which Tanner takes on a tough topic—human trafficking—and does a heart-rendering job with it.
Animal lovers will find much to champion in the book. First, there's Trouble. Cade's dog and Malone's horse also add much to the story. With her own background training horses, Tanner also in the details with her authentic look inside the inner-workings of a rodeo and the care and training of horses.
Serious, yet fun, “Turning for Trouble,” is a grand new addition to the Familiar Legacy series started by the award-winning, best-selling author Carolyn Haines.
What madcap adventures is Trouble and friends are up to in this new book by Susan Y. Tanner? After attending a wedding, Trouble, and his new partner-in-crime, Malone Summer, are planning a trip to Oklahoma City for an upcoming rodeo event. She meets up with Joss, a mysterious young teen aged girl who is on the run from a troubling past on the way back to her house. Malone gives her a job of helping her out with the horses during the rodeo events. Along with Trouble, our Sherlock Homes loving feline, Malone and Joss are on their way for one wild ride in Oklahoma City, that is full of mischief and mayhem!
They find out about several suspicious activities going on at the rodeo when they arrived to festivities. Malone is dismayed to find out that Cade Delaney, the director of the rodeo event and former boyfriend is on hand to complicate Malone's professional and personal life. Trouble, Cade, and Malone is on the case along with the US Marshall, James Ryder, that involves several illegal activities that is going on at the rodeo circuit for some time that may involve Joss.
A murder is committed during the competition that involves several suspects that has Trouble and the gang searching for clues before another crime is committed. Could Tyge, Malone's former boyfriend, involved in this murder? Can Trouble solve these crimes before another life is in danger?
The premise is unique that appealed to this reader. However, the first part of the book has a very slow pacing of the story with the introductions of the characters and some back story about Cade's and Malone's romantic past. I had to re-read several parts of the story to familiarize myself with the characters' names and their past. This slow pace made hard for me to keep up with the various activities and clues within the story.
Thankfully, the second half of the story did pick up the pace and had a very unexpected ending that made this book enjoyable to read to the end. The author did an excellent job on the narrative by Trouble on the basics of barrel racing during a rodeo event. I love the fact that I can learn some new things about rodeos that I did not know about until I read this story. I was given an ARC for a honest book review.
Another very intriguing adventure for Trouble the Cat Detective. The author did a fantastic job of creating an adventure mystery by dropping hints throughout several chapters. The hints were enough to capture and retain a reader's attention.
Trouble, our intrepid Sherlock Holmes aficionado, proves once again what a wonderful detective he truly is. Around the mystery Trouble helps solve is a beautiful story that shares some of the seamier sides of life we often don't hear about. A well crafted book with a very surprising but good conclusion. Another winner for Trouble.
Trouble at the rodeo! Who’d have envisioned our savvy black cat detective in the midst of spurs and barrels and rodeo clowns? Trouble manages to hitch a ride with another stowaway in a horse trailer and soon plunges himself into the latest mystery. Malone, a friend of Trouble’s owner Tammy Lynn, recognizes Trouble and is aware of his crime-solving talents. Which are much needed as bodies are discovered and serious concerns about sex-trafficking are raised. The rodeo, with its passel of nomadic participants and dogged competition, is a perfect venue for such intrigue. Of course, there is a love story. Triangle maybe? Cade, the director of the rodeo, takes the lead in the investigation. But he and Malone have a history, and quite frankly, she plans to concentrate on her career, not her love life. But true love . . . Once again, Trouble’s musings are clever and fun. As the story’s narrator, he is top notch! I like that his role is much expanded in this adventure. Also, the topic of sex trafficking is timely and frightening. And handled well, I might add. I know you’ll enjoy Trouble’s latest adventure! Yee Ha!!
Trouble is back, and taking his new surroundings in stride. He stows away in the rig of a barrel rider, Malone, and then points out another stowaway, a girl who has escaped something, though Malone can't quite figure out what. Tanner does a great job describing the rodeo grounds, as well as the participants. And it's fun to read the grudging respect Trouble develops for Townsend, the Aussie owned by the rodeo manager, Cade ( for whom Malone is the one that got away a decade or two ago). The characters are likable, though the shifting voices can be occasionally distracting, with the story being told by Malone, Cade and Trouble. I do wish that there had been a more robust denouement- the end is somewhat abrupt. But this is another delightful episode in Trouble's journeys, which can be read in order or not - it certainly can stand on its own. This review is based on an ARC from the publisher.
Susan Tanner takes the reader into the world of rodeo, the hard work, talent, patience, and care for the horses and other animals that comprise this unique form of competition. Malone has mastered the sport of barrel racing but she hasn't yet mastered her emotions when it comes to Cade, the lost love of her youth. Suddenly he is back in her life and so is Trouble, a sassy, savvy black cat. Trouble has attached himself to a young stowaway on Malone's rig. It's up to Malone, with the help of Cade and Trouble, to find out what Joss is running from and why the rodeo circuit is under investigation by federal law enforcement. When people are murdered not only is the viability of the rodeo association in jeopardy, but also Joss and the people sheltering her. A great mystery delving into a difficult subject.
I absolutely loved this story written by Susan Tanner. I felt as if I was right there with Malone in the Barrel racing/rodeo world. The training and care that it takes to keep the horses in shape. Joss’s story really grabbed me and kept me turning those pages. Trouble the Cat detective is back thick into solving crimes after hitching a ride with Joss, a stowaway in Malone’s trailer. Malone handles problems from her past and deaths that come up presently as she is on the Barrel racing circuit. The rodeo is definitely a place of adventure and a possible place for romance. I have seen barrel racing before and love to watch it.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it. Opinions are my own.
Malone Summers returns as she is taking care of Trouble. While trying to close out her parent’s house between rodeos she discovers a young girl hidden in her rig. Joss is a teenager who is quiet and seems desperate. Malone feeds her and minds her waiting until Joss is ready to talk. Joss is familiar with horses and is a great help to Malone. Read this great book to find out how this story plays out. It’s more than worth your time.
This is the first "Trouble" book I've read and I enjoyed it so much that I bought the other 6 immediately! I'm really not a cat person, but Trouble has such an intriguing, endearing personality that it's very easy to forget he's a cat at times! This book was lighthearted and fun but addressed the very real problem of child trafficking in a straight forward manner. Can't wait for the next installment in the series to find out what trouble Trouble helps with next!
Now that's what I call a mystery! This addition to the series has been my favorite so far. The story line was riveting and I truly loved the twists within the plot. Trouble really outdid himself this time! Can't wait for the next installment to Trouble's adventures!
Turning for Trouble by Susan Tanner is an interesting glimpse into the world of rodeos. I love joining Trouble on his adventures. Watch out Sherlock Holmes, Trouble is gaining on you!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Trouble is at the rodeo with his sassy personality and unique way of getting to the bottom of things. If you are an animal person this is definitely one for you!! Can’t wait for the next one. She needs to write faster.
Turning for Trouble by Susan Y. Tanner is a magnificent mystery with strong solid characters and a sinister plot.
Will Trouble complete his case with no casualties to his current wards? It starts with our black cat detective, Trouble, finding a stowaway getting into Malone's horse trailer, and him deciding to catch a ride too. The stowaway is a teenage girl who is hurting and frightened. Malone decides to keep Joss, the young, with her until she can figure out the girl's story, which she does with the assistance of Cade, Townsend, and Trouble.
However, they are off for the year-end rodeo finals. Malone is competing, and Cade is in management. Once they arrive at the finals in Alabama, things that wouldn't usually happen are happening. Things are going on behind the scenes that no one would ever expect to happen.
I have to say that this one caught me off guard. I never expected the true culprit.
Cade and Malone grew up in the same area. They liked each other, but the two couldn't get past friendship and crushes due to their ages and unforeseen circumstances. Now, they have a second chance to fan their flame again.
Malone is a fabulous character. She is tough, loyal, and loves what she does but she has a kind heart. And at times, I think that she is lonely. The way she helps Joss is so perfect. Malone gives the girl what she needs when needed, and she tries not to push her too fast too soon. I was immediately drawn to her.
Cade is a genuinely good man. He has worked his way through the sport of rodeo, and now he has a place in management. Cade has many ladies that would stay with him, but he lost his heart to Malone long ago. This second chance at love is something he isn't going to blow. I like Cade, and he is the perfect fit for Malone. The two of them needed to mature and figure their lives out first.
Trouble Our black cat detective is excellent at his job. He truly can detect even the littlest of details that assist him in solving his case. I enjoyed being in his head and seeing how he thinks. Also, his back and forth with Townsend's name is endearing. Tammy Lynn is lucky to have him in her life.
Five Stars I was entirely entertained by Turning for Trouble. Everything is so thoughtfully planned and executed. I love the scenes at the rodeo, from the barn work to the practice time, to the arena and show time. Ms. Tanner's writing allows us to see the actual life of the barrel rider and the life it is on the rodeo circuit. My rating for Turning for Trouble by Susan Y. Tanner is five stars. I recommend this and any of Ms. Tanner's books, along with the many available Trouble editions.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Turning for Trouble by Susan Y. Tanner.
Great story, many plots, the in and outs of the rodeo, taking care of horses, a runaway girl, ex boyfriend, an old boyfriend, and there is murder. Then we have Trouble a cat, who keeps it all straight, always watching and observing people, giving them a nudge when needed. The story flows, you love the characters, and hope that Cade and Malone finally will become a couple. The Star is this black cat called Trouble
I loved Turning for Trouble! This book is full of adventure, intique, mystery, wonderful animals and romance. I enjoyed the rodeo setting. It is so fun and interesting. The characters are great. I love Trouble! He plays a huge role in solving the crimes. He is so wonderful! The mystery is complex and has many twists to keep you guessing right to the end. This book is an absolute must read!
This book was an other enjoyable read. This series is so interesting because each story is so different. It's nice that Trouble gets to travel to different places and met new people.
Trouble never stops amazing me. This book is funny, interesting, intriguing and has just the right amount of love to keep you glued to your seat. I love it when the humans are clued in to what this cat can do.
