Murder in Gemini Earns 5+/5 Stethoscopes … Engaging, Clever Mystery!

Dr. Myaisha Douglas knows both René Jones and her twin sister Robin. René and Myaisha belong to the same amateur writing group, and although she met Robin through René, Robin came to her clinic as a patient. Despite being twins, their personalities make them total opposites. René was the studious one, yet Robin didn’t see the value of a formal education. René graduated college and opened a budding childcare business. Robin used her feminine wiles to take advantage of her, now, ex-husband and her current lover, Donald Evans, who surprisingly she stole from René, and is planning to open a yoga studio. René isn’t always happy about helping her sister, and Robin is always in need of help. The lives of these three women tragically intersect when Robin is found dead in Donald’s home, her sister is suspected of killing her, and Myaisha is compelled to uncover the truth, however difficult, but it’s a truth that ultimately puts her own life, and others, in jeopardy.

Michelle Corbier’s second story in her Write Club Mystery series is an engaging journey starting right off with an intense Prologue. In it, readers learn the fate of Robin Jones and that someone [she] had found her, but left the scene hoping to be unnoticed. The next several chapters acted as a flashback introducing key characters, various relations and dynamics, and possible conflicts that any one could be motive for the death. Myaisha has experience with the local detectives, so she’s eager to share what information she can, however, they are skeptical and prefer she stay out of it. This is a realistic dynamic, even though Corbier creates a few incidents where collaboration is reasonable and productive. The story was engaging, made complicated by inconsistencies in the evidence, multiple suspects, too many secrets, a curious necklace, shocking details, and another death; everything to make this book a “couldn’t put down” experience. Dr. Myaisha is an everyday middle-aged woman of color, a mother of a college-aged son, dating a handsome firefighter who understands her desire to find truth, and a friend anyone would treasure … especially if you’re suspected of murder! The medical information added flavor and made Myaisha with her medical background a credible source and valuable to the case, and to include some in the writer’s group is definitely an entertaining element. All in all, this was a complex, entertaining page turner, and a candidate for Tops of 2023!

Disclosure: I received an ARC from Michelle Corbier, the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

I thank author Michelle Corbier for selecting me to win an E-book of her latest mystery.
I was intrigued by the name Gemini, as it could have many meanings. I was thrilled to start reading it, and even though it took me a little bit to get acquainted with the characters, I was soon hooked on the plot. I liked the fact that right from the get-go, you know there has been a murder.
You can read this book as a standalone, however there are many references to the first book MURDER IS REVEALING, so I was a bit sorry that I had not read it prior to reading this second chapter in the Write Club series. One small detail: sometimes a character was referred to by his/her first name, and a while later his/her last name was used, so it was a bit confusing, especially since I have not yet read the first book. I will be correcting that, and will be reading MURDER IS REVEALING.
The plot is most interesting and twists and turns take place, and new suspects are apparent, then they are eliminated, but the surprise at the end I was not what I had guessed, so I am most satisfied with the outcome, and the fact that all loose ends were tied.
Descriptions of locations and the effect of changing December weather are brilliant. I felt transported to winters (which I don’t do any longer, since I live in southern California)
I do highly recommend this book, as the author writes beautifully, and her choice of words is exciting. One can definitely tell she is highly educated, and knowledgeable in the medical field. I like learning as I read fiction, and I learned a lot from reading this book.
Thank you, Ms. Corbier, for your gift of this book, which I will treasure along with all my beloved mysteries. God bless you all.

Rene finds her twin dying in the house of her lover, Donald, whom she stole from Rene. And then the lover is found dead in his office, supposedly by suicide.
Myaisha is a doctor who decides to investigate the homicides, along with some members of the writing group she belongs to, all writing murder mysteries.

There are many suspects, Rene, the secretary, the son, the ex wife.......... and they all have to be ruled out, and the murder mystery club ladies intend to do just that.

My honest review: Sorry if it is brutal.

I found the book to have no sleek flow at all. There was too much superfluous conversation and information. The characters, in my opinion, were characters in a book. Some authors manage to draw the reader in, and make the characters real. Not this author, I am afraid.
Instead just saying 'face', this author uses the word 'countenance'....... which is fine, but I feel it is unnecessary.
Also, time - why bother to say it took 5 minutes to lock the house before going for a walk? Or Three minutes to get a woman into the interrogation room? What is the point of this?
In Chapter 23, AJ is described as having Six-foot-ten-inch legs which he has under the table. Yet he is described later on as being six foot eleven inches tall........ I doubt anyone has legs that long.

I did not enjoy this book at all, I couldn't get to the end quick enough.

Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was excited to read something outside my normal genre, but this was a let down, to be honest.

This book was just all over the place. It felt like there were so many red herrings and smoke screens that the ending felt anti climactic, especially when it came time to reveal the whodunnit of it all.

Then we have the issue of the romance happening in the book inexplicably. Like, why..... that was so unnecessary and added filler to a book that was already too long and convoluted.

There are far too many players in this novel. This novel would have been far better done around Rene as an individual with her POV than Myaisha.

Myaisha just felt like such a cookie cutter bland detective type. I just don't feel like there was any depth to her character at all and she was a plot device for most of it.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review. I haven’t read the first book in this series but I don’t think it matters as this novel was enjoyable as a standalone for me. I was hooked immediately by this story and found it to be very interesting and not at all predictable. I was kept guessing right until the end as the plot was very clever and a fantastic bunch of characters. Highly recommended. 4 stars.

3.25/5 stars ⭐️
this murder mystery delivered dialogue, drama, and a steady stream of surprises! the banter between characters certainly left me tickled and offered a perfect balance between intense scenes. the cases are built with so many layers that trying to pinpoint the culprit feels pointless, but in the best way! this didn’t feel predictable and followed its own formula that set it apart from other murder mysteries.

The dialogue-driven story follows Myaisha when a murder interrupts her writing. This is a slow-burn investigative story from a doctor's point of view. However, the Myaisha often looks at the case like a mystery writer instead of a medical doctor.

Myaisha finds herself on the sidelines of two new crime scenes. A friend's sister and said friend's ex-beau are dead. So many suspects, so many motives. Money, passion, jealousy. All play a part in this wonderfully woven tale of murder.

The author does a good job of slowly teasing out the facts of the murder. Several times I thought I knew who committed the crime, only to change my mind the next few pages. I enjoy a story that keeps me guessing. I had hoped to see more character development in the story.

Easy fun read. Kept my attention and kept it hard to put down. I really liked the dynamics of the characters relationships. Not too complicated but a nice mix of interesting true facts mixed in. Looking forward to reading the 1st in the series.

Great Read!

Michelle Corner is a wonderful storyteller! Her characters are believable, real, and interesting. The setting was on point. The plot/storyline is the best--it keeps the reader guessing who really "done it!" I absolutely loved the read!

4.25. This is a little more heavy on the romance than I like in mysteries. Other than that, this series is very enjoyable and deserves more attention.

I can say another fabulous mystery. Myaisha was again hunting for another killer who murdered a Women of Color Writing group member. Being this is my second book in the series, the murders are very complex. I know it's good when I can't figure out the person who kills a victim. I have said this once before, but the author Michelle Corbier's writing to me is so good. The cast of characters is interesting. Even the arrogant characters are mean but intriguing to read. I enjoy Dr. Myaisha Douglas and her dog, Boomer. She feeds him anything from her plate, and he eats and doesn't like strangers coming to the house. I gave this book five stars, but Myaisha's boyfriend AJ was just an afterthought to provide Dr. Douglas with a boyfriend. I don't see them in a long-term relationship together. It still has five stars. I hope there are more installments to this series. I truly enjoyed it. Well done, Michelle Corbier.
