It seems the old saint is trying to send a warning to those able to listen, the elderly of his ancient parish.

When Lorne and Heather offer to help the spooked pensioners, little do they realise they’re walking into a warzone.

The local motorcycle gang, The Devil’s Mercenaries, are now peddling designer drugs. While a new cult, The Watchers, is offering a different kind of high.

Lorne, Ella and Heather must untangle the links between an old alchemist, the designer drug and the cult before the hauntings claim more lives.

War is on the horizon for this small seaside town and Lorne is a man who knows how to kill. The question is, can he?

Wow, what a breathtaking ride this book is, especially if you’ve read the previous books in the Lorne Turner series!

I read the first, main book in this Series, Counting Crows, with some reluctance I have to say. From the cover and the blurb I had some ill conceived presumptions about what the story and reading experience would be like. I was expecting a slow, clotted, gothic ghost story with a gloomy, self-obsessed soldier as its anti-hero. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Joe Talons’ writing style is open, engaging and has a natural pace that sucks you in and before you know it you’re travelling through his stories at a hundred miles an hour. Putting the book down at the end of a chapter is not an option.

However, Joe Talons’ handling of the Lorne Turner stories has developed over the series and in this latest outing (much like the previous book in the series, Bad Waters Run Deep) there is a far deeper sense of sinister foreboding brooding within the story-line. The supernatural elements are handled with a skilled and wide ranging comprehension of the esoteric - you never feel that he’s just ‘winging it’.

Presuming you’ve read the previous books in the series you’ll be aware of both Lorne Turners’ character and his deeply rooted issues. In this latest book Lorne is pitted against his greatest adversary yet while dealing with a devastating attack on his very core that stretches his moral compass to its limits at the same time as dealing with a vicious treachery from someone he thought he could trust.

The Lorne Turner books are full of strong masculinity (Lorne is the son of a a farmer and is himself an ex SAS soldier) but the stories are also filled with inclusivity, equality and strong female characters. In fact Lorne clearly could not have survived or maintained his sanity without the strong women he surrounds himself with. In fact so far in the series his friends have included a lesbian Anglican priest, a feisty, young ex bikers moll, a gypsy, a witch, a drug addled and angry wizard and even a djinn but don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing cartoonish about any of these characters. Each is painted with sympathetic prose and even the Djinn has a full, multi-faceted and believable persona.

The horror in this book is the most palpable yet and the feeling of dread and loss of control are constants throughout leaving you ready for the final scenes. You’ll have a surprise or two along the way and you’ll get to know some new, interesting characters and meet at least one important character from the past who will no doubt forge the next stages in Lorne Turners adventures.

Read, get scared, have fun, it’s really worth it!

Chaos streaming in from all directions.

An unexpected death and talk of corpse candles at the funeral tickle Lorne's curiosity as he and Heather attend to show support for Ella as she officiates for her dead friend. Then, to his shock, he learns that the biker gang to which Heather once belonged and has unresolved issues with is making inroads into the small town. A new drug has also hit the market and it weirdly coincides with the rising popularity of a new cult. Then the people and entities Lorne has learned to lean on for support in his struggles with life and the supernatural startingly betray him—including his own mind and body.

A new, fun location at the coast is the setting for the latest of Lorne's supernatural adventures. Heather's past with the biker gang and her family rears its ugly head and threatens everything she's built so far as well as her and Lorne's future. The stakes are higher than ever as Lorne stands to lose everything he holds dear and then some.

Review of The Alchemist’s Corpse

The Alchemist’s Corpse, book 6 in the Lorne Turner series, gradually builds suspense easily and naturally, as our protagonist gets drawn into a small town’s problems with unexplained deaths, a local cult leader’s power, and an old skeleton. The tale is well-paced and details are never overdone or unrealistic. This finely wrought story is a fascinating blend of history of the Church and the power of saints, alchemy and the spirit world, graveyards and ghosts, cults and psychos, ruthless bikers and drug dealers. Lorne becomes ensnared in the process of tracking down those who would see innocents become unwitting victims in the machinations of the cult leader and his henchmen. You might ask, “Why not just shoot all the bad guys and be done with it?” But Lorne struggles mightily to control his inner beast and put his SAS days behind him. He’s buried his guns and doesn’t really want to dig them up again. He says, “Not every solution needs a bullet”; but, surprisingly enough, even Heather starts thinking about doing “kill shots” before all is said and done.

One of the real gems to be found here is getting to know the group of “old dears” in Watchet’s care home. Their old fashioned and truly genuine efforts to help Lorne are delightfully endearing. They are nosy, hard of hearing, argumentative, and ridiculously stubborn, but always steadfast and united in supporting Lorne in his quest to make things right.

We should all be so lucky as to have a Lorne Turner to call on. This series is great escapism, yet strangely rooted in reality that will touch every reader. The best books on my shelf reflect both of those essential qualities, and I am delighted to have a section reserved specifically for Joe Talon’s works. I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for providing an honest review.

Joe Talon’s writing has struck gold in his most recent novel, The Alchemist’s Corpse.

Lorne, Heather and Ella are on another set of supernatural and mundane adventures after the discovery of a dismembered head. They investigate corpse flames that herald death amongst the inhabitants of a local retirement home. There story revolves around drugs, the motorcycle gang Heather used to be a part of and a religious group and its charismatic leader.

Joe is masterful in weaving Lorne’s otherworldly djinn, Ahmar, into the story. His descriptions of the settings and the people in this story are wonderful. Locations and characters come to life through his words.

I look forwards to release dates of Joe’s books. They make my day and this one has not disappointed! I enjoy escaping into the landscape of Exmoor to follow his characters through each mystery. I devour them and will sacrifice sleep and chores to get to the next chapter, and the next, and the next. I highly recommend this read to anyone who has read his stories in the past, or to anyone who enjoys a good crime book with an other-worldly twist. Beware though, the dishes might stack up for an extra day or the sweeping conveniently not be done for a week when you hit certain parts of the story!

Wow, what a ride! I did not think it was possible to enjoy this book more that the last in the series, but this one took my for a ride and did not let up til the closing page. The author certainly knows how to write compelling characters (who feel like old friends to me now) and keep the pace moving along and a good clip. The descriptions of everything are some of what make the story stand out for me. The opener for example “She sits on the cold concrete, trying to keep her feet out of the rain. The shivering she can never stop makes her teeth chatter as the rain worsens. The narrow doorway just about protects her, and she pulls the cheap nylon sleeping bag tighter. Staying here has its risks, especially for a young woman, but the city centre bank kept the heating on all night, and just a little of that heat escapes. She steals it. Not like the bank would ever do anything else for her.” I can’t get enough of the tales of Lorne and his friends. Do yourself a favor and pick up all the books in the series! Note though that it is not necessary to have read the others to enjoy this one!

Once again Joe Talon takes us on a ride into the lives of Lorne, Heather and Ella. They battle the supernatural, drug dealers, alchemist and cults in his newest novel.

Lorne is battle-scarred from his time in the service ,Heather is battle -scarred from being a service and Ella is battle-scarred from giving service. Each has survived service in different ways. Lorne is haunted by his past in many ways and suffer PTSD. Joe handles these episodes with a caring but realistic approach.
Add in the characters from the home for seniors and you have a well balanced story.

The book has twists, turns and the action keeps you turning pages way past your regular reading time. I find his books impossible to put down and I know once I start I'm not stopping till its finished. Then I go back and reread again at a slower pace to get all the nuances in the story.

This is part of a series but you can read it as a stand-alone and not be lost, but for the best understanding of Lorne read the first couple short novels then continue into the series. They are well worth the time. I know there are at least two more books coming up and I can't wait to get my hands on them.

Book 256 - Joe Talon - The Alchemist’s Corpse

Book 6 of the Lorne Turner series and for the first time…I struggled…not because the writing wasn’t of its usual high standard…because it was…and not because the characters weren’t real…because they were...but for the first time…the supernatural elements almost seemed to outweigh the development of the characters.

It was Lorne’s battle with his inner djinn that was front and centre…as well as a drug craze sweeping the area and death candles being spotted near an elderly community’s residential home. It was bitty in places…some characters just didn’t seem themselves. Heather, Lorne’s fiancée, is not herself, even Ella, the local vicar, now part of the church’s exorcism team, is sidelined when things should mean she should, and indeed must, be at the centre.

The denouement is really dark, even for Turner but perhaps the most intriguing change of direction comes towards the very end..for someone who has spent years escaping the brutality of war and taking orders…Turner finds himself boxed in to those very things he despises… Book 7 should be interesting but before then there is a wedding to attend. Still fascinating.

This is the latest release in the Lorne Turner supernatural thriller series set in the beautiful West Country of England. This book sees Lorne and his close-knit "family" of eclectic friends pitched against a seemingly harmless cult taking root in the area. But nothing is ever what it seems in Lorne's life and with the help of his friends, Lorne uncovers the shocking truth behind the cult whilst trying to contain and manage his own fragile mental state, a by-product of his 20-year service with the SAS and some of the things he witnessed. With the biker gang his fiancee Heather managed to escape, back on the scene and seemingly involved with the cult, Lorne once again has his work cut out. Another brilliant book in the series by Joe Talon and a must-read for fans of his earlier books and those with an interest in the genre.

This book leads you into a confrontation with those seeking evil for their own power inexorably. People are lost or trapped in this world by supernatural means. Lorne Turner and his cohorts along with some seniors who are not about to be dismissed as useless assemble to confront the evil in the small town of Watchet. Alpha, the leader of the Watchers of Light, tries to present himself as benevolent, but his warping of the people around him is subtly and efficiently done; even more so when it’s multileveled: his evil is not only supernatural but physical. He leads Lorne into doubting himself, and even subverting the djinn who shares Lorne’s mind. Lorne’s path through this psychic quicksand is so very well written and logically thought out, the book was hard to put down. I’ve enjoyed every book in this series, and recommend them highly.

The Alchemist’s Corpse, the sixth book in the Lorne Turner series, is a great supernatural story amidst the framework of an intriguing thriller. Something is not right in the small town of Watchet. Whilst a local cult, The Watchers of the Light, has been gaining popularity, and their leader, Alpha, has his flock enthralled, Lorne knows something is off. If that is not enough to handle, he must also deal with ghosts, betrayals, and try to keep his fiancée, Heather, safe amidst the goings on with a local motorcycle club. Along with an edge of your seat suspense, the characters are quite gripping in this wonderful novel. The whole series is a must read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Intense

I like how the stories are part of where he grew up. It makes everything so much more. PTSD comes in many forms and is caused by many things. It is unnerving when you can see, feel, and hear things that others can't. For Lorne, he has found that he has always had that ability but just recently came to recognize it. When an entire community is at risk from the dead and unknown, Lorne can not just stand by. The love of his life Heather comes face to face with her past, and his best mate Ella is now in charge of ridding the area of bad spirits. Lorne and Heather find help among an unlikely group and are able to try and put things right

Joe Talons' imagination keeps Lorne Turner embroiled in the supernatural whether Lorne likes it or not. I have read all the previous books and impatiently wait on the next. Can't you write faster Joe? I've enjoyed Joe Talons' turn of phrases, such as "her voice so quiet and slow, a mouse could dance between the words and make more noise". Haha, can't you just picture that? Lorne is in a pickle this time. Read the book to find out what happens. Joe's books are always a page-turner. I received this as an ARC. This is my honest review.

While each book seems to be about something different, they all are page turners.
This one is no different.
I really enjoyed the tie-in between all the different elements from past books and enough explanation to not lose you as the reader if you have not read any of the previous books.
This book combines ancient lore with present stuff to make you think what would you do if you were in their shoes.
And at the end, to wonder when the two main characters plan to get hitched.
Keep up the great writing.

Joe Talon is a natural storyteller drawing you right in from beginning to end. In many cases, I find that new books in a series, like movie sequels, are never as good as the first. Each book in the series is even better than the previous one. Lorne Turner and his friends are all strong characters and compliment each other in their strengths and weaknesses. Another supernatural thriller showing some of the worst of humankind. It is a very entertaining book that you won't want to put down.

Another spellbinding story! Joe Talon’s writing makes it easy to fall into the story but hard to climb out. This was a very exciting story that brings to a conclusion many story threads that needed to be finalized. I loved how hard Lorne fought to be a good person and to keep those dear to him safe. I love how Heather has a spine and anger towards those who prey on people who are weaker. This is such a good series.

I love Lorne turner!!!

The 5 or 6 books that center around d the Lorne turner character have been the most enjoyable reads I have had in a long time. I'm sad that there's not another one to read that picks up from the end of the alchemists corpse, because I think Joe talon has done such a good job developing every single character in the series. I want to know if and when they have kids and read about their wedding. Hopefully Joe talon writes more Lorne turner books fingers 🤞

Sequels just keep on getting better

I love the ongoing character development and how sophisticatedly paranormal philosophies are worked into the plots. Makes me want to find an ecumenical christian church that can accept the "supernatural" as part of the "natural" human experience on earth. I am highly dubious about how the new Alpha and Toni characters are going to carryover into future plotlines. In this book, I found them irritating.

An excellent book by Joe Talon. Lorne Turner does not look for trouble but trouble seems to find him. Lorne and Heather are trying to live normal lives but a cult and a bikers gang disrupt their lives and plunge them into old memories. A group of senior citizens as well as some mutual friends assist but it is the task of Lorne and Heather to finally find a solution. But what will this do to their relationship. An excellent story written by an expert in the supernatural.

I can honestly say there is nothing to dislike about this book. It as with all the other Lorne Turner books is a captivating read. I sadly read this in one day I could not put it down.

Thank you Joe Talon for the additional story regarding the wedding.

Can't wait for the next adventure.

Another brilliant read

I didn't think I'd like this book as much as the other Lorne Turner books but I was so wrong. Fast paced, new enemies all wrapped up and tied off with a bow of golden oldies. Magic, drugs and of course the most lovable Ghost. Lorne, Heather and Ella face off against old foes and a new threat
