My favorites in this collection were the Jillian Hunter and the Linda Howard stories. The Jillian Hunter story, which I remember is called "Ruined", is a somewhat gothic Victorian about a young engaged lady (not necessarily happily) and her small group of friends and fiance', who get shipwrecked on a small island owned by a reclusive horror novelist. Ms. Hunter has some very hunky, yummy heroes, and this hero is one of my favorites out of her stories. He sees the young woman and decides he wants to keep his gift from the sea. It was short and sweet, making me wish it was a longer book. The Linda Howard story has a cop who ends up getting injured out in the bayou and nursed back to help by a sheltered young woman who's lived most of her life in the bayou, and has a family with a reputation for witchcraft. You can guess that they have a powerful attraction and end up falling in love. It was a very good short story. I don't remember the other stories, but these two made this book a keeper for me.

The first story, Blue Moon by Linda Howard, is a solid romantic tale. Lilah lives on an island far from the rest of town, keeps to herself, and there are whispers that she's a witch. Jackson is the county sheriff called to investigate a potential troublemaker headed for her property. The moment Lilah and Jackson touch, they know they are meant to be together. One of the nice things that can happen in shorter stories like this is the absolute conviction the two leads can have in each other. There doesn't need to be a lot of outside conflict, because hey, you've only got 70 pages to fill. A lovely read.

In stark contrast, the second story, Castaway by Geralyn Dawson, is awful. It's like there are two stories being told: The man wanting the woman, and the woman wanting his heirloom. And I'm not talking euphemistically here. She is just so completely unlikable - she's selfish, snobbish and petty. You start off with the man's point of view, and beginning that way, it is almost impossible to think of her as not being the wrongdoer, and then instead of apologizing for leaving him ten years ago, she acts like a spoiled child. And then the end is just ridiculous in light of the history of the two characters.

I really loved the third story, Ruined by Jillian Hunter. Sydney is a naive professor's daughter, engaged to a duke. Rylan "Wicked" DeWilde is the notorious lord on whose beach she's shipwrecked. Their attraction is immediate, and once he finds out the cruel man she's engaged to, he decides he must have her for himself. Some really great sensuality, and who doesn't love a wicked leading man?

Buried Treasure by Miranda Jarrett was okay, although the reluctance of the heroine grated, and the resolution was a bit sudden for my tastes.

And Swept Away by Miranda Stewart was so boring, I cleaned my basement about halfway through the book. It was good up until they met on vacation, then it was just soooo boring! They held hands and walked the boardwalk and blah blah blah, and then a one-paragraph consummation, and then back to the hand holding. Maybe if I were 16 or 65 I'd be entertained by that kind of thing, but at this point in my life I want something more.

Bueno, qué voy a decir. Es mi escritora de Romántica favorita. No soy objetiva:

[...]there were a lot of very weird, and/or stupid people out there, and they all seemed to surface during full moon.

And that animals liked her didn't surprise Rylan. She'd had that same effect on him. He'd probably run and fetch a stick if she asked him.(pág.177)

“It's so summer,” she sighed. “Cotton candy and boardwalk fudge.”(pág.411)

Three of these authors are new to me; Linda Howard and Geralyn Dawson are favorites of long standing. I think the stories would have been less jarring if they had been presented from colonial times - to later times - to contemporary, rather than the jumping around.

BLUE MOON (Linda Howard) This is a rushed story, that could have been a great full-length novel, about law enforcement during full moons. A blue moon is actually the second full moon in a single month. From personal experience, I remember principals at school moaning about erratic behavior during any full or blue moon. The main characters were interesting and believable.

CASTAWAY (Geralyn Dawson) This is a charmer by an author who writes great dialogue with great humor. Although the story was supposed to be about Victorian times it seemed contemporary to me. It is about a couple who marry and are interrupted during the honeymoon by Hannah's father. He talks Hannah into getting an annulment. Ten years later, they come to realize they are still in love.

RUINED (Jillian Hunter) This is another interesting story that would have made a great full-length novel. The author did an excellent job of creating a gothic feel to the story. Sydney and three friends are shipwrecked off the Cornish coast and saved by author Lord De Wilde. Sydney is engaged to a moneyed duke, who (unbeknownst to Syndey) is an amoral philanderer.

BURIED TREASURE (Miranda Jarrett) This tale, on the other hand, was too long; I found myself skipping paragraphs. This is a colonial story about three friends who grow up and separate. Although Miriam Rowe loves Jack Wilde, he disappears. Now, it is four years later and Miriam is going to marry a Cambridge scholar. Suddenly, Jack returns and tries to separate the betrothed pair. The solution was too pat.

SWEPT AWAY (Mariah Stewart) This is a well-crafted story that moved smoothly along. Jeremy is a successful private eye who wants to reconnect with a chef he met during a previous case. However, he has a past that has been too traumatic for Jeremy to face for many years. Jody helps him face his past.

Blue Moon by Linda Howard ***
Linda Howard is a new author to me and I have to say I like her style.
Most of the time anthologies aren't my favorite stories because the stories are quite small. However I did like her characters and the chemistry between them. She made me hungry for more of her books!

Castaway by Geralyn Dawson **
I thought Hannah and Drew were very quick to kiss and make up. Especially after the past they share. So to me it wasn't very realistic.

Ruined by Jillian Hunter **
I liked the paranormal element at the end of the book, but I didn't really like the hero. Rylan is so arrogant! I like an alpha male, but Rylan was a bit too much. I felt he didn't listen enough to Sydney and how she felt, but only had eyes for his own wishes.

Buried Treasure by Miranda Jarrett **
This story missed something, some depth. It was nice, but nothing more than that.

Swept Away by Mariah Stewart ***
I liked this story. Jody and Jeremy are both workaholics. But one day they meet and they can't forget the each other. When Jody decides to go on vacation Jeremy follows her and they spend their time together.
Their attraction is beautifully described and it's great to see their love grow. The characters have depth and it feels as of you're reading about real people.

Blue Moon

I liked both Jackson and Lilah. Lilah is the kind of resilient, independent woman that I would want to have as a friend. Jackson is smart, thoughtful and respectful. They both were fleshed out well for a short story and didn't feel like stereotypes at all.

The premise that Lilah sees auras and has premonitions is original, especially for 20 years ago when this story was first published. It makes the speed with which they fall into bed seem more natural, since she knows that he will be her lover. The only part of the story that seemed forced was Thaniel's fate. The culprit just didn't seem plausible.

Bonus points: I like that there's no coercion when they have sex. Jackson is clearly interested, but he leaves Lilah with full choice. I feel like that's been shockingly rare in the romance novels I've come across lately.

3.5 stars

Castaway

I've enjoyed Geralyn Dawson novels in the past, but this is certainly not my favourite. While the two main characters are realistic enough, I don't particularly like either of them. Drew's plot to get Hannah into his bed is pretty unscrupulous, and they both let their tempers get the better of them more often than not. Also, this may just be me, but I can't stand the fishing-related sexual innuendo. No thank you. So, Castaway is only ok for me.

This book is actually a collection of 5 short stories from some popular authors. Three of the stories were historical romances which I am not usually fond of. The book might have gotten a higher ranting if they were modern romances. I was a little disappointed in the Linda Howard story as it was a murder mystery that was only approx. 77 pages long. A little too short for my liking and also the couple in the story fell in love in 24 hours. Pretty sure that is not that realistic. The last story in the book was pretty good and it went a long way to give it a 3 star rating.

I LOVED this series of novellas. I started with Mariah Stewart's "Swept Away" because she is one of my favorite authors. I totally fell in love with Jeremy and Jody's jerseyshore romance. Ms. Stewart does not fail to keep her readers happy! Linda Howard's "Blue Moon" was my second favorite story. All 5 short stories were page turners. If you are looking for a fast and entertaining book for the beach, "Under The Boardwalk" will not disappoint!

Of the five stories in this book, I only enjoyed the first one, which was by Linda Howard. I wasn't so much in the mood for the fluff of the others. (Maybe if I'd read it a different day, the book would have been better. Plus I was going to read it as a beach book for SRC, but not a grain of sand on the cover.)

Only picked this book up because I used to own it but couldn't remember any of the stories. There was a reason for that. Won't list them all here but it was an interesting diversion for a little while.
