This rather short novel follows a US sniper and spotter team on an assassination mission in Afghanistan. It is set after the Afghan war of 2001 and the target is a terrorist leader. Needless to say, the initial attempt goes to hell in more ways than one. The two Americans then have to use their own ingenuity and local resources to both survive and to complete their mission.

This is competent but not great military fiction. A rather straightforward story, exciting but without any really unexpected wrinkles. Interesting reading if you want to learn something about modern snipers and how they operate. The dialogue is pretty awful at times though.

What can I say? This was just a good, fun story. Not terribly intricate with the plot, or even character development, but if this was a movie, there would be men in uniform and lots of shit blowing up. How is this a bad thing? I enjoyed Williamson's writing style. He is easy without being simplistic or unintelligent. He's sarcastic. He knows how to move action along. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a quick read, military stories or sniper stuff. :)

A sniper and spotter head into the back lands on the Pakistani Afghanistan border to kill a top terrorist mastermind.

The 1st hundred pages of setting and mission setup are interesting. The next 130 pages as they get into the interior are somewhat slow. The last 140 pages are a pretty good roller coaster ride of action.

This is straight up Sniper fiction. Infiltrate, kill, get away. Not my usual cup of tea, but MZW is a good writer, and this is a well written story. Quick ready, good characters, dangerous situations. Colorful letting. I liked it, and I'll read the next book in the series.
