Allen knew his way around the Columbia River Gorge and always wrote clearly about it. Take this book, a camera, a notebook, a rock hammer and a lens in the saddlebag of my motorcycle and I'm entertained and edified for yet another day. If you don't visit the Gorge you'll get a lot less out of the book but it'll still teach you some Pacific Northwest geology.
