At first sight, schoolteacher Elizabeth Burbridge knew Lord Alec Sinclair was the man of her dreams--her wicked, heathen dreams such as dedicated educators were not supposed to have! His sensuality threatened her every moral scruple, but the devilish man proved as persistent as the intruder of her sleep.
Alec was puzzled by his fascination with his daughter's prickly schoolmistress, though the more he saw of her, the more challenged he was to properly seduce the proper Miss Burbridge. Yet, despite his fierce determination, the tantalizing object of his fevered pursuit proved as elusive as a dream. . . .
DNF, pg 40-something. There's nothing really wrong with this book, per se. The grammar is competent, the writing is descriptive, there's a (silly HQN-style) plot in the background...but I don't like this author's style.
The heroine is a prim little fussbudget without personality -- she doesn't even have a bitchy attitude or sense of humor, & her persistence in disliking/not understanding/being terrified of her "feminine attributes" annoyed me like woah. (40 pages & I was already sick of hearing about her ginormous boobs & what a bother they were. FFS.) Her every thought & dialogue simply screamed "placeholder romance heroine." Likewise, the hero was a cliched Romance Dude without anything to set him apart from the usual muscled man-candy -- genre heroes like Drew in Lord Libertine or Ian in The Dark Lady put him to shame.
...And don't get me started on the witty banter. I loathe witty banter. STFU & have a normal conversation, dammit.
YAWN.
On the positive side, I liked that the heroine (whose name I already forget...good lord) was tall & wore spectacles. That's always nice. Too bad she was such a bore.
Insulso.
