How can something so innocent cause a chain reaction of events?
Lisa Sutton enjoys her simple but satisfying life in the southeastern Arkansas town that she settled in after graduating from college years ago. There, she met a man who enriches her life and makes her believe in fairy tales, gave birth to her sometimes too intelligent daughter, and curated a tribe of loving and dependable people. If there is a more perfect existence on the planet, she hasn't found it. She isn't just happy, she's content.
All of that changes when she takes a weekend trip with her girlfriends.
For Jeremiah Hawkins, nothing could make his life more perfect than it already is. Well...almost nothing. The only thing missing from his life is an "I do" from his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his daughter. That, and another baby. This time, a son. He bides his time on one, and makes plans for the other, but things don't always go according to plan. In the span of one evening, everything he knows is swept from underneath him and now he has to scramble to find his footing in a world that doesn't make much sense.
The Vow Series To Buy a Vow - Book 1 To Build a Vow - Book 2 To Break a Vow - Book 3 Things Hoped For - Book 4
Chencia C. Higgins is just a girl from Texas who has made it her mission to create stories in which sassy, southern Black women are loved out loud. Her Carina Adores debut, D’Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding, was a New York Times best romance of 2022. When she isn't hunkered down in her writing cave, Chencia can be found with her nose in a book, saving recipes on Pinterest for things she’ll never make, and dreaming about travelling even further south for the winter.
Somewhat a good story but things which led to my average rating was because, they both were too consumed by their relationship, we never really got to find out what Lisa's reasons for rejected Jeremiah's previous proposals were, she rejected him for years then suddenly she wants yo get married with no solid reason, I kept on to the faith that Hawk & his partner would be mentioned as obviously we just read about them in the previous book but nope, just Hawk. I think this book had so much potential that it just didn't quite meet.
Whew chile!!! Lisa needed her ass cussed all the way out! Everything about this story made me roll my eyes. From the rude tagalong Fallon to the palm reader to Lisa’s dumbass actions and her lack of self-awareness! I never got a clear picture as to why Lisa didn’t accept Jeremiah’s 4th proposal. Was it really because it wasn’t elaborate? Or is it because she’s a selfish asshole? I think it’s the latter.
I could not root for Jeremiah and Lisa to have their HEA.
I think I am done with this series. The Hawkins men and their women get on my nerves.
Now let me begin by saying I thought I was going to have to corner Chencia and ask her why she did Jeremiah and Lisa like that. After reading the short story Remember Our Love, I wasn’t sure what their ending would be. Then this book started all bad for me. I know Lisa’s heart was in the right place but I feel she could have done some things better that would have saved some heartache for her and J. Now Candice, she can kick rocks. I don’t care if Lisa and J were broken up, there are certain boundaries you don’t cross. Three months is not even a long time, which makes me think she was feeling Jeremiah for quite a bit of time. I do agree that Lisa was selfish and spoiled but the way Candice talked to her was not as a friend but as a jealous woman who was mad that a man wanted and loved someone other than her. I don’t think her intentions were selfless. Trisha however kept Lisa honest and stayed on her to do right. You could tell that she cared about both Lisa and Jeremiah. I’m just glad that they both got what they really wanted and, despite what Lisa said, deserved.
Jeremiah and Lisa's story was quite the emotional roller coaster. I totally understood Lisa's stance on just not being open to marriage. I kind of wished that she would've just explained everything to Jeremiah especially the Mama Sari palm reading. Candace was triflin' and deserved a beat down. She was so fake. Jeremiah was a sweetheart. He loved Lisa and put up with all of her rejection for too long. I loved how Lisa proved her love by using actions to get Jeremiah back. The spontaneous wedding was beautiful. I wanted to hate Lisa but I rooted for their relationship the entire time. Ja'mya's big vocabulary made me look forward to the dialogue she would have with the adults in her family. I also liked how the author chose to show how a breakup can affect the child as well. Sabrina Hawkins was something else. I think as a mother in law I could understand her loyalty to her son but I liked how she would drop nuggets of knowledge and hardcore truth on Lisa. I liked how this story really showed how you can get complacent in a relationship and take things for granted. I liked it.

These crazy two...made me so mad. The reading was definitely unexpected. Now I don't care not up for debt Candice is/was a snake...point blank period. All that mouth she would got these hand for gp after having that baby. Why we ain't get no denying with finding out the baby sex...gotta wait for that. Jeremiah...J, damn men I felt for him cause he good. She play to much and was lucky. But she should have went in for the Candice thing, he tried it. And Mama Sabrina... a mess but she would be arms length cus she tried it too. Happy for them Will Trisha get a read? Can't wait for Jereth. Oh and Boobie..
First of all a round of applause Chencia👏🏽 I instantly heard Johnnie Taylor running out of lies in my head! So I’m going with I was suppose to want to slap and hug most of the family AT THE SAME TIME. I have a love/hate relationship with Lisa; I completely understood why but I couldn’t understand how she was so oblivious to everyone around her. Jeremiah and Candice still have to catch these hands 🤷🏽♀️ it’s the principle of things. Know I’m waiting on Jereth with the slugs now 🤤😍
I can't even tell you this story had me on the verge of a meltdown. Jeremiah's unquestionable love had me jealous(yes I know it's just a book) and ready to go find him just to make us(YES ME AND HIM) feel better. Lisa had me so ready to coat my face with a thin layer of vaseline cause she was about to see these hands. This well-written thought-provoking, emotional love story switched the roles between man and woman (not saying it hasn't happened or can't), it just let me stop, JUST READ IT, I PROMISE YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED
I truly enjoyed reading Jeremiah AKA "J" and Lisa's story. At first I didn't know what to expect after the reading Lisa had. But after finding out that she refused to get married to J, I felt that she was selfish. I know she was a feminist but I still wanted to know why she felt she didn't want to get married. I loved J, he was such a sweetheart. I really felt his pain when Lisa left him on his knees at the gas station. It broke my heart. But in the end I'm so happy both he and Lisa got their happy ending! I hope he gets his wish for the son he wants! Great book!
This book had me in my feelings and boo hooing so damn bad. Was up all night reading, I fell in love with the characters I laughed with them cried heartbreaking tears and finally tears of joy with them. It’s not often you read a story that starts off with a seemingly perfect couple for it to break your heart and then put it back together. Don’t even know if I’m making sense. Point is I loved it 😍
Although I've loved both Hawkins brothers stories thus far, the premise for this second installment was unlike anything I've ever read!! This story broke my heart in the beginning, but I had faith that the author would make it all better in the end. And boy did she deliver!! Jeremiah was the very definition of what I love in a book hero. And the HEA was a beautiful culmination of a very emotional journey for both him, and Lisa.
Jeremiah and Lisa almost gave me a heart attack! I LOVED the spin on this one, though. Chencia really took your emotions on a trip with this project. Be prepared to swoon to laugh, to be mad, to be sad, all at the same time. I'm loving the Hawkins brothers and I hope Jereth is up next!
Great job on this book. I gotta tell you that Lisa was testing me.......Even though Lisa had to make a difficult call, it was still hard to accept the things she did and said. I was so glad the cousin didn’t do what I expected her to do. This story had me engaged the entire time and I can’t wait to read the next book.
Lawd Lisa almost gave me a HA! We all need to know our self worth in any relationship. Apparently, J made Lisa his whole world. When love hard this can be the case. Lisa was a little self but she did love J! To Build A Vow is full of rollercoaster rides!
It was really good. I don't believe in tarot reading but I like the point of it all. She was selfish and he did everything to cater to her needs whereas he neglected his own.
This book was slightly more difficult to stick with compared to her first novel. I was incredibly frustrated with Lisa! I wanted to smack her myself at several points in the story. The romance factor was wayyyyy more intense in this 2nd book compared to her first. At one point I thought that’s all Lisa wanted from Jeremiah...sex!!! Overall it was a good read. Kudos to the author and I look forward to diving into the 3rd book and learning about Jereth Hawkins.
