Fine Homebuilding's popular Great Houses collection brings to life the delight and warmth of small houses. Highlighting charming homes under 2000 square feet, this collection features some of today's best compact house architecture.
Read on the heels of Larry Haun's A Carpenter's Life as Told By Houses, Fine Homebuilding's More Small Houses is a bit of a conflict. Yes, these houses are small. Yes, they are compact. Yes, everything fits perfectly, including their inhabitants. But many of these houses are build with what seem to be unlimited budgets, stunning style and custom fittings. Lovely to look at, yes, but impractical for the most part for many home builders or buyers.
None the less, the variety of small homes, in terms of setting, intent and design was fun to see. Each home is described by its architect, and is complete with floor plans, expansions noted if applicable and cost per square foot.
As I read through the work, and traced the traffic patterns and spaces of the homes, I thought of how the home would fit my needs, likes and interests. Well, I finished the book, and I'm back now in my stick built, Southern Oregon tract home. Pretty satisfied, all in all though I do need to re-read Kramer's Stuff, or at least Don Aslett on cleaning up clutter.
Some of these are far too modern for my taste, but there is one floor plan I especially liked and would buy or borrow this book again to use those blueprints if I ever get to build my own simple house.
