Night's Knights: A Vampire Tale
Vampires on a quest for knowledge attempt to create the perfect offspring, but from the shadows an even more demonic evil threatens their immortality. Markham is a simple Irish immigrant striving for the American dream in 1860 when coach robbers cause his untimely death. Severina is an exotic beauty from the jungles of Brazil whose family is brutally murdered by the same man she later calls lover. Run, run far, run fast. Not from any vampires, just from this book.
The characters have no depth and little history or context. Their choices usually seem arbitrary, sometimes inexplicable, and have no grounding in who they really are---because we never get much sense of who they are. It’s hard to care much for any of the characters since they are little more than cutouts most of the time.
The plot is either routine or completely arbitrary; often things happen for no apparent reason, and no explanation is ever given. The worst example is the ending, where everything spins off the rails into a giant whirlwind of “Huh? Wait, what??”
In many ways this reads as though written by someone who read Anne Rice’s vampire novels, thought they were really cool, and wished she had written that. Many of the characteristics of Rich’s vampires are strikingly similar to Rice’s, only without several hundred pages of development and context.
At some point it occurred to me to wonder whether this book might have been self-published. Turns out, it was. Aside from the plotting and characterization shortcomings, it is filled with basic grammar and usage errors, typos, and general sloppiness that no professional editor would ever allow, such as “took another bag that she had hid” (p. 211), “If we have any hope in overcoming them,” (p.320), “author’s of vampire novels” (p. 225), “decide who will be the new god’s,” (p. 346). I could go on… and on, and on.
If you can’t find any publisher willing to take on your work, one explanation might be that you’re not quite ready yet.

I really don't know what this author was thinking when he or she wrote this book. I am a huge fan of vampire books period and I try to be positive in all my reviews. But-because there is always a but-I could not find one thing I like about it. In fact I am still amazed at how many other reviewers have stated how much they loved this book. However, I have yet to see one of them give a good explanation of "why"; they indeed love it!!! So, I wanted to go over some of the aspects in this book; I don’t want to give any major things away. But I do want people to be informed before they decided to throw away their time on something this horrible.
The main character Jespa is not a good person, rather I found myself wanting to punch her in the face; she is the type of character that you learn to hate after the 1st page that contains her major characteristics . Jespa has had a hard life and works at a bar to support herself, the author makes you feel like this character is strong; but in fact you see her do stupid things. Right after you are told she is strong, you learn that she has found out that her so called first love is cheating on her with her close friend that she allowed to move into her home. And instead of her confronting them, she runs off crying and can barely hold herself together and on top of that she allows them to continue to stay in her apartment. Now-Really? How strong is this character? But instead of moving forward in a positive way, Jespa leaves work that night with one of her co-worker (who is a guy) and finally sleeps with one of the guy’s gay roommates (named Craig). Not to mention Craig is in a relationship with this really sweet guy named Martin. How nasty??? This should tell you a lot about how this character operates. Then she has a friend named Kristine that was a very likable character and had shared a lot of her inter most secrets with Jespa. Well, Kristine had been dreaming about Julien (who is a vampire) every since she was little and when it is time for Kristine to be turned into a vampire; Jespa shows up to ruin her perfect moment. Wait, let me say this right quick-I do believe that Kristine thought that her and Julien would be together and from how and what he said to her, I believed that too. But guess who is there (when it is time for Kristine to be turned)…yep, you guessed right-Jespa!!! And when Julien goes to turn Jespa, they have a sexual experience right in front of Kristine!!! What a friend right? Not only does Jespa want Julien, she also wants Martin (he was Craig’s boyfriend), but after she slept with Craig; Martin broke up with him (Craig). And needless to say all this book was basically about her, I so didn’t feel like the author gave the other character enough “face time”; because if she had…then this book would have been much better. Because with the information you get, you are too focused on what a horrible character Jespa is and how she is only out for herself. You try to focus on the plot, but it is futile at the least.
The vampires in this world:
1. Can't go out during the day.
2. They feed from humans and animals alike.
3. At one point in the story, vampires don’t realize that they can have sex; because they usually share what is called “The Circle of Love”. Meaning they feed from (humans or animals), then when they want to be intimate; they exchange blood with each other (vampires).
4. Must vampires get to a certain age and finally walk into the sun, to commit suicide; and yet I have no idea why this is. (Better yet, the author did mention that because the oldest vampire eventually hands down knowledge to a younger vampire; but still the description of this belief is still unclear.
5. These vampires can come to people in their dreams, perform mind control, mind tricks and varies other telepathic things.
Plot: Now, this is only what I think I should have gotten out of reading this book. Almost forget, there is the aspect of reincarnation in this story. The whole events in this book were to lead up to the Chosen One (who is Jespa) getting rid of a demon or demons that had been living for some time, the main demon had been in Julien’s dad or was Julien’s dad. I am still unsure about that one. And the vampires are supposedly gods and rule over Dusk, Dawn, and Day & Night. And these positions were offer to the vampires by Jespa after she destroyed the demon. And finally Jespa is a god or one of the heavenly gods. I just don’t get any of the stories; it is almost like my time had been wasted on reading this; because I didn’t understand the plot of the book.

Each time i read, or re-read Nights Knights i'm pulled into this parallel world,
from the idea of the blood circle: *hot-hot-hot*!!! to the century spanning story telling. and characters one can't help but feel passionate about. whether you love or hate them: each one leaves their mark.
i feel Markham's pain - right up until i start to agree with Severina & Julien and want to kill him. He becomes way to self loathing - which only makes the book better as a whole. we all need a character to hate right?
And Julien... what can i say except: yum. Especially when Jespa hooks up with him.
And Jespa: well now she just kicks ass. A super-heroin worthy of a place among the true fictional heroins from modern day fiction. i can't say enough good about Night's Knights w/o giving away the story and this is one you'll one to savor.
Do *not* miss it!!!

I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive of getting this book. I really enjoy Emerian's podcast Horror addicts. I've just read so many vampire books that I just wasn't interested in reading a new on but because I liked her short stories so much I gave it a chance.
I'm sorry I waited so long to read it because this is really more then just a vampire story. The characters are well developed and likable. She does a great job of making you care about all the people in this book and the action is great. The book just gets better as it goes along and the last few chapters I was not able to put it down. So If you want a good read check this one out.

So far my rating my rating would be a 3 and I'm about half way done. We'll see if this holds true as I finish the book.
**EDIT** I'm going with a 3... it was slightly better than okay, and I guess I liked aspects of the story. It wasn't what I was expecting at the end, which is why it doesn't get a better rating. Usually the ending ties the story up in a way that I enjoy, but in this case it bugged me. So if any of you make it to the ending, I think you'll figure out why it bugged me. Good-luck, if you decide to read it.

This book was rough for me. I wanted to like it, but just couldn't. The one story line/ character that I was enjoying, Jimmy the Cowboy and Markham, let me down. There were a lot of places where a good content editor would have helped this book. Some of the details were extremely off base and should have been fact checked. I think it was an extremely poor imitation or the Anne Rice books. That's just my opinion, other folks might love it.

In parts a really good story with some great characters. (Why I am giving it a three star). It just seemed to lose direction and try to morph into several different stories all in one shot. I would love to read something else they wrote but I cannot recommend this one with out a rewrite.

Seemed too much of a giant jumbled mess going back and forth between several stories (at least it seemed that way for most of the book) and then the ending was just not what I expected.
