The Leadership of Jesus will be a book that, once read, many will want to keep close at hand for regular reference. It is not only insightful, cut-through prose on leadership and stress, the discipline of solitude, making decisions, calling 'the elephants', self-awareness and God-awareness, revolution through learning, the 'four authorities', and much more that has impact. McGuigan's writing powerfully takes readers on a journey to a place we have needed to go for a very long time - deep into the leader-heart of Jesus Christ. Reflective prayers and questions for personal and team development.
I have this in the paperback edition. And the only reason I'm deducting a star is because of the eyestrain caused by the exceptionally small font size used for the majority of the book. No doubt this design feature is absent in the e-book edition so I recommend getting this otherwise excellent book in that format. I found the topics very interesting and would have ploughed through them quickly but I often found even a single article sometimes too much to finish in a single sitting, given the size of the font. (Which reduced even further for the 'Discussion and Reflection' sections!)
The book explores a range of topics through the lens of its implications for the Salvation Army. Its wider application may well have been enhanced by removing such specific references, since the scope of the topics embrace concerns for the entire Christian community. Perhaps my favourite chapter was 15 on Leadership and Authority with its succinct look at four different authorities: Natural or Personal, Learned, Spiritual, Positional. Optimally, Christian leaders will have all four in play.
Closely following on in the favourite stakes was chapter 14 on Leadership and Lifelong Learning with its insightful reflections on Mary Magdalene and Bartimaeus who both addressed Jesus by the unusual title, "Rabboni"—my great, beloved teacher.
