Good book on how to read and study the Bible, including an in-depth Bible study method. If you've already read Ferrin's How to Enjoy Reading Your Bible, much of this book will be repetitive.
This was a great book helping a person to study and memorize God's Word in a life giving way. I hope to take some of the principles of this book and bring them into my daily disciplines.
There are many “methods” out there on how to study the Bible, but I’ve always felt there was something missing, something that should be there but just wasn’t, like the proverbial missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Keith Ferrin found that missing piece; the whole point of reading the Bible isn’t to learn about the Bible, it’s to come to know God through reading the Bible.
In this book, Ferrin outlines a set of practices that any reader can adapt, either entirely or those found most helpful, to make time in Scripture and draw closer to God. I believe the single most helpful point Ferrin makes is that reading Scripture through the typical Bible study usually means reading one or two verses, or at most a paragraph. This book shows how extended periods of time spent with entire entire books can lead to a far greater depth of knowledge and experience than those more common methods. For that reason, I would strongly recommend those Christians who feel they’ve fallen into a rut in their daily Scripture reading and would like a fresh, revealing approach to the true message of God’s Word.
Ever since I saw this author in person years ago, I knew I wanted to know the Bible in the same way he did. He didn't just recite it, he recalled the stories from memory as if he had been there. It felt as though he were giving an eye-witness account of it. Since then, I've been happy to try out his method of learning. I'm not sure if the method is perfect, but the repetition in reading has itself strengthened the depth of my knowledge and love of Scripture. Learning to put myself in the shoes of those who wrote it, those who listened, and the times in which it is written has been useful. I'm still not able to recite all Scripture from memory, but I feel much more comfortable in it.
I read this for a class, but I did really enjoy it. I thought it was extremely practical as far as describing how to do an inductive Bible study. He broke the process down into what to do each day, and I plan to try out his method this month.
This book is a guide on how to internalize God’s Word and takes the reader through the steps of learning and loving God’s Word. This book was a requirement for a writing course I am taking.
