A really well thought out and pretty realistic piece of speculative fiction, in which 99% of society doesn’t have to work and the 1% continue to work as normal. The main characters work at a company designed to find jobs for the remaining one percent and it’s really interesting to see the crazy jobs the author comes up with that can’t be automated (standing in front of a security camera so that the data can’t be used due to breach of personal information, professional “quitters” and “apologizers”). It really makes you think about the nature of working and why we do it (and why some people would do it even if it wasn’t necessary). I really like Otsuka-san’s idea of work ethic (pretty much don’t go crazy stressing over it, it’s just work). One of my favorite things is how non-judgemental the novel is about the outlined future, it just presents it how it is without trying to make overly harsh statements about humanity, which was pretty refreshing.
