Rating of 5 all around; appearance, arrangement, detailed data and overall usefulness. Really enjoyed using this especially for it's genealogical chart details. There were numerous tidbits of intriguing information encompassed within almost every page. A fun tool for bible studies with the book folding out from it's accordion styled platform so that everyone can gather around and see to discuss the same thought provoking information. Will definitely be used as a reference guide in the future. Highly recommend to everyone interested in this genre.
This book first caught my eye at the local B&N with its colorful graphs showing timelines back to Adam and Eve that not only laid out Bible characters and history, but also parallel timelines for secular history (Egypt, Babylon, Greece, Rome).
But I passed it by. I could not find footnotes showing the sources used, and I'm a bit of a skeptic on things like this.
A few weeks later I was prepping for a class on how the Bible was assembled. I wanted to use 500 year increments as a tool for story telling. My research led to this book again. I discovered that its source was "Annals of the World", a extensive world history written by James Ussher, an Irish Bishop, in the 17th century. It is considered classic and accurate history, and came about from Ussher's effort to determine the age of the earth using Bible genealogy and events (4004 B.C. If your interested). What he ended up with is an interlaced world history as he worked from all sources he could find to validate his dates.
I immediately went and purchased the Timechart..
It's a visual learner's dream. The charts fold out to twelve feet, six of those are the timelines. The rest is filled with charts, maps and lists of various tidbits like the eight Roman emperors during the time of the New Testament. Who knew?
This is a great book for kids to have around to browse to learn both Biblical and world history.
Needless to say, I am a bit of a geek on these things. So now I have ordered Ussher's tome as well. I don't anticipate it will fit my visual learning style as well, but I understand he was a good storyteller.
A very well done and well put together book about events that occurred in the Bible. Some of the selected dates may leave you scratching your head, but on the whole, it's very well done.
