What I Wouldn't Give

River: I only had one rule—stay far the fuck away from Rachel Simmons (AKA, Mouse). And it worked for me. It worked for us. It meant minimal contact (until she had to swallow her pride and ask me for help getting liquor off the top shelf). It meant peace of mind. But that was all before her apartment flooded, leaving her without a place to stay, leaving me with the only available spare room amongst our friend group. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned when it comes to Rachel, it’s that once my cardinal rule is broken, bad things happen.

Rachel: Our personal history aside, what type of monster doesn’t decorate for Halloween? And sure, we live in one of LA’s Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods—but that’s beside the point. And Halloween (or the lack thereof) is the least of my problems when it comes to River. He might look like a rock star and, okay, I’ll admit, he has a voice that could rival Bon Iver’s, but that’s about as deep as he gets (as in, not at all). At least, that’s what I thought…

Tess was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her unusual childhood in a beautiful but tragic country was responsible for her deep love of everything fantastical and magical—including romance. When her thirst for adventures and travel brought her to California for university, she happened to meet her very own Mr. Darcy (slightly taciturn and all). Tess now lives with her husband in California, and when she’s not elbow-deep in some topsy-turvy world of her own creation, she can be found working out, meeting her friends for drinks (sometimes, after working out), and alternately binge-watching soppy rom-coms and Criminal Minds with her dogs, Teddy and Winnie.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

What I Wouldn't Give
is a contemporary romance by author Tess Shepherd. While this takes place among the cast of the book Bar Hopping for Singles (yes my Ox loving heart was so happy every time he was on page) you can enjoy this as a standalone.

Three years ago, in the middle of hooking up, River walks away from Rachel because, even if it breaks her heart. , he realizes she is worth more than a one-night stand. Fast-forward and while they may work side by side as bartenders, they aren't what you would call friendly. When Rachel's apartment floods, and she needs a place to stay, River's is the only option. The forced proximity will make Rachel realize she will never be able to get over him, and will make River question if he made a mistake three years ago.

She's the girl who gets nervous and tells a dad joke between kisses. And I have absolutely no fucking idea why, but I find her sexy as hell. I always have.

I ended up loving this one way more than I expected. I'm always hesitant with romances that involve musicians. I'm not a fan of playboy MCs and River is the text book doesn't do relationships type. It actually took a while for me to like him, but when he really let himself be vulnerable and show his care for Rachel through is actions , I was sold. Rachel however I loved from the start. She's a book loving, awkward, indecisive, goofy woman and I may have a tiny crush on her. It made me sad that she saw was insecurities and saw her quirks as negative.

"When you look at me, it feels as if time slows down. It's just you and me in the entire world. Sometimes, I can't breathe past it."

Together the two have banter, sexual tension and way more emotional moments than I anticipated between them. I loved the intimate scenes between them when River finally gives into his feelings for Rachel. He doesn't ravage her, but takes his time and worships her body. I also appreciated that he didn't assume to be able to give her what she needs in the bedroom, but instead has her show him and hands her the reigns.

Overall, I really enjoyed What I Wouldn't Give by Tess Shepherd. A well-rounded romance with forced proximity, sexual tension, banter, Taylor Swift serenades, steamy showers, found family, emotion, and a happily ever after.

I loved this book! River already intrigued me in Bar Hopping for Singles, and I’m so happy to have read his story. I could definitely relate with both Rachel and River about having different expectations for yourself than others have, and I loved how they helped each other figure things out. It was so good!

I LOVED Rachel’s (tiny but mighty) part in Bar Hopping For Singles, I enjoyed getting to know her more in this book. While also seeing the character development in River. Great sequel, and still being able to see Ox and Annie’s evolving story together.

After a disaster in Rachel’s flat, she finds herself seeking help from the unlikeliest of people – River. Rachel and River work together at Halogen, but they do not get along. They annoy each other and bicker throughout their shifts, so River is the last person she wants to share a flat with. However, as the pair spend more time together they realise that their hatred may be disguised as repressed feelings.

What I Wouldn’t Give is the sequel to Bar Hopping for Singles, and it does not disappoint. River makes many appearances in the first novel, and I always found myself wanting more of his story so this book satisfies that greatly. Not only is the character still a humorous jokester, we get to discover another side to River. His vulnerabilities and insecurities. Shepherd uncovers the backstory and personality of River in a thoughtful and well paced manner. There is more to him that what he presents himself as to the other characters, and Rachel is the character who enables this expression. The lovable traits of River are still there and there is even more to love about him as his relationship with Rachel progresses. I was not disappointed at how this panned out. It did not feel rushed or like a cliché. A lot of the time, the enemies to lovers trope can become predictable and the latter part of the genre consumes the former that the development is missed and you forget they were enemies in the first place. With this novel, there is skepticism, and a sense of reality underpinning their relationship development.

Rachel’s character is relatable, and I found myself laughing and nodding at so many pages, from her text messages being essays, to her overthinking. I feel proud of the character for taking risks and stepping out of her mother’s shadow. The juxtaposition between River and Rachel allows for a brilliant story to be told. They both help each without knowing it and Shepherd presents their character developments perfectly. For me, reading this book presented a rare occasion where I couldn’t seem to side with just one character. I adored both River and Rachel. Of course, Annie and Ox are also present, challenging who is my favourite. Although I shouldn’t really be surprised at how much I love these characters. Shepherd has a remarkable way of writing these lovable characters in all her novels. You can definitely be assured to read extraordinary relationships, beautiful friendships and exceptional individuals. Shepherd really understands how to convey honest, truthful, and relatable characters to the reader, which compliment her plot.

As much as this novel is a cute read in terms of witnessing the development between River and Rachel, there is a seriousness that underpins the story, with River contemplating his career and not to mention the ending. I will steer clear of spoilers but I will say that the ending of What I Wouldn’t Give was extremely emotional, tense, and heart wrenching. I don’t think I have ever read a chapter this fast in order to find out the outcome. I was enthralled by Shepherd’s writing and could not put the book down. Absolutely incredible writing here.

Overall, this is a must read for Shepherd fans and readers of Bar Hopping for Singles. Even though this is the sequel, it could work as a stand alone but understanding where the characters already are and how they were left in BHFS will really help your reading. Plus you really can’t get enough of these characters so make sure to read both to get your fill of Annie, Ox, River, and Rachel!

What I Wouldn’t Give” is so much more than a romance. Tess Shepherd takes the reader down a thoughtful path among the MCs, journeying to a destination including career happiness, unconditional love, and found family.

Bartenders Rachel and River have been frenemies for the last 4 years, and they never speak of the night they were intimate that last time they were amicable with each other. These last four years of working side by side, of conversing when only necessary, and of ribbing each other with sarcasm or harmless jabs, River and Rachel have always had the other person in their peripheral vision. In the words of River, “I’m too aware of my compulsive urge to touch her. It’s like I’m a prisoner and my favourite ice cream is sitting in a huge bowl just outside my cell after years of going without.”

The story takes River and Rachel through some ups and downs that draw them together—physically and emotionally. Their chemistry is undeniable. I enjoyed watching them embrace each other’s quirks and passions—from River’s musical magic to Rachel’s essay-type texting.

While I resonated so much with Rachel’s personality, I also resonated with River’s insecurities. I can’t pinpoint a book where I connect so much with both the hero and heroine, but this one is it. It truly left an impact on me.

What you’ll love: True friendship where you know what each glance, tap of the foot, and hand on the waist mean. Found family. Thought-provoking quotes that will leave you questioning your own goals. The kind of romance that will offer you an apple pie with a huge pepper in the middle coz it’s that sweet and spicy.

Thank you Tess for an advanced copy. I highly recommend this and I can definitely see myself rereading it.

🚫 Not for K-12

What I Wouldn’t Give by Tess Shepherd is book two in the Bar Hopping For Singles duology, but works well as a standalone too.

I couldn’t wait to read this story about River (Annie’s BFF from Bar Hopping For Singles.) After almost making a mistake at a friend’s wedding, River & Rachel end up working side by side for the next three years, and do their best to avoid each other when they aren’t tormenting each other.

When an accident leaves Rachel’s apartment uninhabitable, she must ask for help. Can she and River swallow their pride and cohabitate amicably? Can this forced proximity and getting to know their true selves cause them to move past their issues to become close friends..and possibly want more?

Another job well done by Tess Shepherd. Lovable characters with just enough steam.
Definitely recommend.

Oh River!!! There were so many moments in book one where I was rooting for River and Annie and I ended up being so glad it was Annie and Henry and now I know why!!

Everyone loves to hate River, there were moments where I was shouting at him for being so stupid and for nearly ruining the best thing to happen to him with Rachel! The way he calls her mouse and the way he pretends is everything, the angst and the will they, won’t they!

Seeing River come alive in this book was such a lovely thing to see, admitting to himself that he was more than a bartender and admitting that Rachel was more than someone squatting in his house!

The moment he realises he can’t live without her with be etched in to my memory forever!

Tess, you have smashed it again with another group of characters that I absolutely adore!

This is book 2 of the Bar Hopping for Singles series so a lot of the characters from the first book make an appearance. I really enjoyed Rachel and River’s chemistry and especially the tension at the beginning of the book. I loved that Rachel was a bookworm and she was insecure with meeting guys and going on dates. River was in the first book but this time around we learn he has a passion for music and get to see his vulnerable side. It took a while for their relationship to ignite but their journey was both emotional and realistic.

This is the perfect book for those that enjoy enemies to lovers and forced proximity tropes.

What I Wouldn’t Give by @author_tess.shepherd

Bar Hopping For Singles Book 2

Rating: 4⭐️

It’s been 3 years since that night. 3 years since I made a fool of myself and 3 years of working side by side with River at Halogen. Now after a flood destroys my apartment I am forced to move in with him. Can we survive being together 24/7?

I think this one was my favorite out of the duology. I swear that I like friends to lovers and think that I kind of like enemies to lovers, but I realize now that I tend to like more enemies to lovers than friends to lovers.

Rachel has been working at Halogen alongside the crew from book 1 for 3 years, the problem is she feels like she made a fool of herself in front of River. So instead of being friends they take on the frenemies angle.

Unfortunately there is a flood at her apartment. Which causes her to call on the Halogen Crew for a place to live, leaving her forced to share an apartment with River.

This was the 2nd book that I've read from Tess. Both books were very enjoyable! I loved the couple's journey! I didn't feel like any of it was forced and the story just easily flowed. I loved Rachel's fun and quirky character. I felt like Rachel's character was so realistic and could remind so many people of themselves! River's character was equally great! I loved how he was so patient with Rachel and so supportive through all her insecurities! This would be a great read for anyone that loves enemies to lovers and forced proximity!

I was so happy to get River’s story. I did feel like he had more hiding underneath.

Rachel has had a crush on River for years and after an embarrassing moment has learned to hide her feelings. However it’s hard when they work together. When she needs temporary housing River offers his spare bedroom.

The tension between them sharing a place is palpable. I loved seeing them find support in each other from feeling like they weren’t accepted for the choices they made for their life and career.

I will read anything Tess writes, it’s always so smoothly written and flows so well.

I received an arc for review. All opinions are my own and given freely.

River and Rachel definitely have a rocky history. Each one has their own story about what happened and why things played out the way they did. River is a ladies man who can sing like no other and play guitar. Rachel is a feisty awkward pixie who will only opens up to a few selected people. While they might have their rough past River is right there to help Rachel in a time of needed. I’m that moment it leads to a new chapter for them. I love watching their relation ship grow. Each chapter led to another layer being pulled and a side we didn’t know each one had.

So this is the second book I’ve read from Tess (I read the first Bar Hopping for Singles book last year) and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! Tess has such an easy writing style and she writes her characters beautifully. I enjoyed this book from her just as I would any top best selling author to be honest, maybe even more so in some cases. It hit me right in the feels at the end too. I loved the dynamic between Rachel and River. And it was refreshing to read a book where the MMC didn’t take the successful path he hoped he would but in the long run it made everything so much more worthwhile. Buy it! You won’t be disappointed.

I want to thank @author_tess.shepherd for the digital copy of What I Wouldn't Give by Tess Shepherd for an honest review. It comes out in early February and you can read the first in the series Bar Hoping for Singles now.

What I Wouldn't Give is book number two in the Bar Hoping for Singles series but can be read as a standalone. I love when authors expand and dive deeper with the relationships of others. The characters in What I Wouldn't Give are introduced in the first book in the series Bar Hoping for singles and you will definitely want to read them both to get the full experience.

Synopsis: When Rachel is forced to find another place to live after her apartment becomes uninhabitable, River, after being persuaded by their friends, offers for Rachel to live with him. After some struggles with their relationship in the past they are forced to revisit the past and see if they can put it behind them or not.

Thoughts: Tess has done it again by making readers fall in love with the characters. I love how she can take two characters who have their differences and place them together. I enjoyed that River wants to create another life for herself and that life doesn't always have to be one that everyone approves of but just one that makes her happy. For me the end of the book really touched home, I won't ruin it here but Tess really outdid herself. I felt like I was there with the characters and I can't wait for what happens next in the Bar Hoping for Singles series. I highly recommend this book.

'This is the reason why I love Tess Shepherd and her work, she tells a damn good story! A thrilling, amusing and word-munchingly good. Once you start, you won't put it down' -The British Bibliophile

Thank you to Tess for sending me an ebook ARC to read and leave an honest review. Sorry it has taken me so long to write a review!

What I Wouldn't Give is book two in Tess' series , Bar Hopping for Singles . As the series name suggests, the novels focus around a set of singletons, crafting a story around them as fate gently gives them a nudge in the right direction thanks to the situation and events that they find themselves in or go through. Book One, which is aptly called 'Bar Hopping For Singles', set the tone for this duology, and the tone struck the right chord!

Book two, What I Wouldn't Give, had a lot to live up to, as per the rousing success and reception of Bar Hopping For Singles. Would it strike the same chord or deserve its own encore? There was only one way to find out. It was time to meet River and Rachel.

Gently immersed back into the city of angles, Los Angeles, River and Rachel--friends and co-workers both--were brought together via the heavens that literally rained down on Rachel's apartment. Luckily for her, River took her in like a bird under his wing. A muscular wing, at that. It was a move that would go one of two ways: it would bring them together, or wedge a divide between them that would be unrepairable. Set on keeping his hands off and his body far away from Rachel under the small confines of their workspace, River finds this task even harder to do in his--slightly--larger apartment. The space seeming much smaller now that Rachel's body occupied it with him. Living with River, it's only a matter of time before the things buried deep come out as Rachel's enthusiastic and infectiously positive personality seeps into River's. Secrets and such that stayed buried deep in their hearts and minds coming out.

Once the line was crossed, would there be any going back. Would they want to go back?

Tess once more brings more into this novel than just the necessity to fill a storyline with something to engage a reader. She brought heart, soul and so much emotion into both River and Rachel, so much so that once again, it didn't feel like I was reading about fictional characters. It felt like I was reading about issues, feelings, emotions and everything in-between that I have experienced myself, have thought about or have known about via someone else in my life. Rather than glossing over these things, Tess works them into her characters. These things simply aren't character traits. I've long admired this about her work, and I'm pleased she's continued it here.

River stood out as a character here in this read for me personally. As much as I love a good alpha male, I have an equal fondness for men who share their thoughts, feelings and aren't afraid to show their emotional or vulnerable sides. Tess has given River such a likeable nature, and I just know that he's going to go down well with readers who want a wholesome romance read--with added 'stuff' here and there. There will, of course, be those who will naturally gravitate and relate to Rachael. We've all been like her at some point in our lives, and to see her evolution from who she was at the beginning to who she was at the end--who she and River both became--, gives hope to those of us in the real world.

Guaranteed a Happily Ever After, What I Wouldn't Give was as much of a joy and pleasure to read as it has been to continue reading, supporting and getting to know its author. She gives you the best of both words, an enticing story with an element of realism. Not something often included in the fiction books we escape to, but something I deeply appreciate.

I'm eagerly looking forward to what Tess is cooking up for us next. I hope you are too!

Five stars.

I would just like to say a very big thank you to the author who very kindly sent me a paperback copy of her book in return for my honest review.

What I Wouldn’t Give is book number two in ‘The Bar Hopping For Singles’ series. It can very easily be read as a stand alone with no problems or at all.

This book is a wonderful contemporary romance and i really enjoyed it. I read it very quickly as I kept needing to know what was happening next and the storyline kept me completely hooked, right to the very end.

I really warmed to the two main characters, River and Rachel and their chemistry and banter was off the charts and I loved it.

This book was a wonderful, emotional, romantic read with that all important happy ever after…..

Tess does it again. Tess has this way of making her characters so lovable and so relatable.
Rachel finds herself in need of a place to stay after her apartment floods.
River offers up his place if only to get under Rachel’s skin and drive her nuts.
This forced proximity story line explores insecurities, life long friendships and more.
I continue to love the way Tess portrays strong friendships-both male and female and the way her characters all show many emotions.
If you are looking for a laugh out loud, feel good book, pick this one up!

Thank you Tess for my gifted arc in exchange for an honest review!

Bar Hopping for Singles was one of my favorite reads of 2022, so I was excited to see what River gets up to in his story! I loved getting to know River and Rachel more, and the cameos from Ox and Annie! The ending definitely had me on an emotional roller coaster. You could really feel the chemistry between the characters, and I appreciated the flashback scenes. It helps to fully understand what happened in the past.

As always I love Tess books and highly recommend!!

Oh, River. I knew in book one that I couldn't wait for your book to come out. I knew there was a reason you were my favorite character in that book, and this book just confirms it.

River and Rachel have been working at Halogen bar for the last few years. Shortly after Rachel started working there, get and River came *this close* to hooking up at their friend's wedding, but things changed after they went to his hotel room. Rachel was left broken, and still had to put up with River and his constant flirting with female customers. When River isn't tending bar, he can be found playing live music and working on making it big in the music industry.

Fast forward to now, Rachel's apartment has crazy flood damage and she needs a place to stay. She finds herself in River's spare room. The two of them try to hold back their feelings for each other, but we get to see their walls slowly crumble down. River even finds himself serenading Rachel at various times. Lots of swoon-worthy moments here!

One of my favorite parts of this book is all the music mentioned. Tons of great songs, both new and old! I love the chemistry you feel going on between River and Rachel as they deny their feelings and try to step around them. This book is definitely a favorite read so far this year.

THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU IF: You're a music lover who also loves some close proximity and a quirky hero who can make you swoon with just his words!
