The prologue implies Elsie is a witness to a car accident and this leaves her traumatised, particularly as the deceased driver is her ex-husband. Now in a relationship with Landon, Elsie attempts to move on but struggles to move on from Alex. The majority of the story is told from Elsie's perspective so her emotional state is revealed to readers. Eventually, the perspectives switch between Elsie and Landon as dark secrets come to the surface. The pacing is slow and casual, following the relationship between Elsie and Landon: their ups and downs and the secrets they keep from each other.
