Throne of Wolves #1

The Forbidden Wolf

Rate this book
I was always an afterthought... Until I was forced to steal my sister's throne.

My twin sister, Kiana, is the future alpha… destined to rule our pack. Me? Little ol’ Elyse? Nope…I’m second born... the spare. Doomed to a life of service.

To ensure power, Kiana is betrothed to the alpha heir who’s next in line to rule the throne of the most dominant, rival pack. But when he arrives to claim her, he rejects my sister and chooses me, throwing the Five Thrones of our territory into chaos.

What the hell? Right?

Against my will, my world is turned upside down. Now, I’m no longer the invisible sidekick to my power-hungry sister. Instead, I’m whisked away, showered with attention and gifts beyond anything I’ve ever known before.

This handsome, yet possessive heir keeps going on about how we’re fated… but I’m not feeling it for this audacious brute. The wolf is used to getting everything he wants and I’m not game.

So, my twin hates me, I’m supposedly fated to a male I don’t love, I’m falsely accused of treason, and on top of all that…now I must challenge my sister to rule my pack’s throne.

Good times.

Torn in all directions, something has awoken inside of me... something terrifying.

And if the forbidden secret gets out it will make me the most hunted wolf since the beginning of our kind.

Super annoyed

First of all, the movie references were super annoying. Page after page of movie comparisons and a whole breakdown of little Women??!! The MFC was just a hot mess. Weak for the most part except when it came to her " fated mate " who she felt nothing for. The other characters fell super flat. The friendships felt forced, they just were all close maybe I missed the connection due to skipping pages of her comparing each character to an actor from another movie. So many comparisons and most of them went over my head so I got super confused and just skipped them all. I actually liked Sebastian, the MMC enough to remember his name. He seemed honest and brave enough to go for the things he wanted. Put himself out there just to continuously be shut down by the MFC whatever her name is. The whole concept of the book was confusing. This could have been a great book with some good editing. Obviously no editing was done. There are a few pieces here and there that grab your attention but for me it was super overshadowed by a lot of the inner dialogue and the reference. Like when her dad is dying and she throws in a Simba and Nala reference from the Lion King in the middle of it all?!!! Help me understand. Will I read the next book ? Probably cause i just can't seem to find a good book lately 😩

never hated a heroine so much

Honestly it is basically a winning story kinda like shifter Cinderella (but cruel life by her blood sis) and prince wolfing. Easy 5 star by the plot and the world built
BUT I have never ever hated a heroine so much. I understand she is sheltered had a cruel life between her 13th Bday until nowadays (being 20) however if she is not whinnying how sh!t is her life or antgonize the one person (wolf charming) that wants her give everything: I mean she is saying to him “Im not weak like your mother” when she was there to see her sizeures herself?! And this is just one from the millions of utterly disgustingly rude behavior. Ahh yess and if its not enough than she is mawling human body parts as she got really really angry as she is not being saved?!
I mean while the stroy is interesting there is NO WAY Ill read whats more to come.
There is no romance at all at least not from the heroine side and she is an ugly soul… so even I really liked Sebastian’s character and Evan’s too there is NO WAY I can read even another chapter (so I totally missed the free B2 chapters)

And there are many grammatical error (both spelling and wrong wording)

I never been so sad spending money for a book….

Why I finished you may ask… good question. I really hoped that she will get to her right mind by the end… but no… she remains a cruel thing by the last moment with the only person wanted to be good to her….
The general idea is the only thing elevating it to 2 stars but could have been an easy 5 if not for this heroine…

At the beginning this story was very confusing to me especially the movie reafferences of movies I never saw. As the story progressed, I started to understand more of what was going on in the life of Elyse and the evil twin Kiana.

Elyse was relegated to nothing in the eyes of her sister and father, so she turned to the only ones that treated her with any kindness, humans. This was a time when shifters were not out at all, they even wore their wolf skin beneath their clothes.

Kiana was prepared her whole life to be the Bronx Alpha as was her right being the first born. She was to be mated to the Manhattan Alpha Heir Sebastian in order to make an allegiance between the 2 packs. Elyse was treated as a lowly serf, to be mated in order to whelp pups.

On the day of Kiana's mating ceremony, things take a turn with Sebastian's revelation not expected by any and yet very eye opening especially as the days progress.

Elyse has always been very mousy, but the discovery of things unknown to her may very well make the cat, or rather the wolf come out of the bag.

• Spare Heir Elyse
• Two minds in one body
• shiftskins
• Fantasy Romance
• Two sisters; 1 hot guy

Jayla: health-focuses friend
Charlie: “being the mom friend”
Evan: actor-wanna-be

All those movie references were beyond me 😳 because I have no mind for remembering TV trivia. However, the story itself was entertaining. I almost felt sorry for Elyse, because the shifter world was backwards. Reading was prohibited! And yet, hypocritically, she could read and write? Ignore for the sake of the story… Shifters had a shiftskin for those times they need to cover up, yet she preferred human clothes (so would I if offered a superhero stretch tight!) On weekend nights she would secretly hang out with 3 human friends at the movies. Crossing into the city brought her into the Manhattan pack territory, but it was worth it. Until she got caught. Until her twin sister told her that she was getting married to some older guy. And after she had steamy dreams about a guy from the Manhattan pack.

Admittedly, I found the long stretches of atmospheric descriptions at the beginning were too much. For example:

“I paused in the deep shadows under the awning that stretched over the sidewalk. Those shuttered gilded doors were recessed several feet. Empty poster frames lined the inward-slanting walls, most of their small round bulbs smashed out over the years. A tight seal of trash had formed in front of the doors, as if the rats had learned how to construct a beaver-style dam out of candy wrappers, dogwood blossoms, and soda bottles. A single sheet of “paper hung on each of the double glass doors, marking the building for demolition.”

--While I loved all the atmospheric descriptions, I wanted shorter sections and more dialogue or action in the beginning.

“I pictured him as a bright red, singing, dancing Caribbean crab. Normally, that image would make me smile enough to fake my way through any mind-numbing conversation with Kiana about their fairy tale future”

Elyse’s twin sister was contracted to the other pack’s alpha, Sebastian. Despite being the spare, Elyse actually didn’t envy or covet her sister’s pairing. How cool is that?

❤️‍🩹 The Romance ❤️‍🩹

“it was stupid, really, why anyone would feel the urge to lick another person’s circulatory system…”

pages and pages and pages of….no dialogue

Ok, I get narrations, narratives, putting the reader IN the story…on scene. But to go 5-10 pages of absolutely no dialogue between characters is a ridiculous, terrible writing style and makes a “somebody please put me out of my misery” type boring af read. For goodness sake, this story didn’t half a## pick up until about 80% of the way through. I found myself doing the dreaded skimming of page after page waiting for something to happen! Like gee wiz, what are we waiting for? Armageddon??? We’re just coming out of a global pandemic-are you trying to make me call a mental health hotline???

Honestly, I’ve read some pretty poorly written stories in my life and I think this book could have totally avoiding been put in that pile…had the author simply gotten the action and dialogue OUT of her head and put it on paper. (Or like Pryor’s dad said “get to the part about the dirt!!) This was so absolutely frustrating to me that I had to go and Google the cons of authors penning stories lacking dialogue and the best I found was something referring to a book called “Rifleman Dodd’” or something like that on www.helpwritersbecomeauthors.com;

“The obvious lesson here is: include dialogue. This absolutely doesn’t mean that description, internal narrative, and action scenes aren’t interesting. However, a good story will include a balance of everything, and dialogue goes a long way toward breaking up potentially tedious scenes and keeping readers focused. You can think of dialogue as salt. It perks up the readerly taste buds and makes everything else taste better.”

Gosh, I have a strong dislike for giving bad reviews, but seeing as nothing happened in this book….I’m really NOT criticizing anything. One this is for sure, with Father Time stalking, threats of Covid outbreaks again..I have no time to waste by reading anymore in this series….I have no idea how long I’m going to live. And I’d like to spend the rest of my time on this earth trying to enjoy and live my best life.

Throne of wolves, book one

Surprisingly well developed plot, characters and world view. Smoothly written and correctly edited. This is book one in a series and involves wolf shifters who live hidden from humans in the middle of New York City. Elyse is the daughter of the Bronx alpha, but her twin Kiana, was selected and trained as alpha heir. Elyse always yearned for the love her family failed to show her, and began sneaking out to watch human movies as a 16 year old. She met a rag tag group of human friends that often provided her with her only support. Her father, sister and the evil pack beta all seemed to blame her for "killing" her mother at child birth. An arranged alliance via mating is established between the Bronx heir and Manhattan pack's heir, Sebastian. But when the time comes, much to her dismay, Sebastian choses Elyse, claiming she is his fated mate. And so the intense and often violent conflict begins, with many secrets, mysteries and goddess interventions unfolding. I just read the other reviews here. I'm actually surprised at most of them. I normally read books with a grammar police red pen and found few errors in my edition, July 2025. I sort of understand reviewers' complaints about the movie references, because I'm not that familiar with them either. But, Elyse's entire world view was based on these movie principles melded into her antiquated wolf shifter social structure, so they were important to her character development. I also agree that Elyse was mean to Sebastian, but this series seems deeper than your average instalove shifter indie. Why can't she feel the fated bond? Damien anyone?

Am I my sister's keeper

This was a good start to a new series. It has everything: Family Drama, Betrayal, Fated Mates, Rejection and Action.

What do you do when you're own sister treats you poorly and tries to steal your birthright? You fight to reclaim what's yours.

Elyse's power hungry twin Kiana is set to marry the alpha heir of the most dominant pack but when the day comes the alpha heir rejects Kiana because Elyse is his Fated Mate.

Throughout this story Sebastian was trying to win Elyse over. Elyse was being unnecessarily difficult towards Sebastian, when all he wanted to do was love her.

Now Elyse is public enemy number one and her sister Kiana h*tes her guts. Kiana wants Sebastian and the power that comes with being Mated to him but Sebastian proved that he has no desire for her.

Loyalties are tested and secrets are revealed about Elyse and Kiana. Secrets that Kiana never wanted Elyse to discover.

Now that Elyse knows the truth what will she do next?

A good premise with all the angst of a rejected mate story only with the female doing the rejecting. There were a lot of movie references which was cute at first but then just became too frequent and confused the story in some chapters. Book 2 is much better. Elyse and Kiana may be twins but in every other way they are worlds apart. Elyse is a dreamer, sneaking off to hang with humans and indulge in movies every weekend. While Kiana has become the hard ass alpha determined to hold onto her throne even if it means mating with the alpha heir from another burrow. But fate has other plans for them both and the two sisters might have to put aside their differences if they are to stand against what is coming.

Loved this series so much. Writing this after having finished the series. Werewolves or shapeshifters, whatever you want to call them this is a story about them. I would love a better description of how the shiftskins work though.
I really loved the characters, their complexities, their personalities. The entire world building was incredible. I could envision what each character looked like. They were quirky, snarky, funny, romantic & some even cruel. All were well written.
I will definitely be looking for more by this author.
Books 1 & 2 are narrated by a the same person and the third by another. At first it bothered me. Not because the second narrator was bad or did anything wrong. It just wasn’t the same tones and inflections. Both narrator’s were amazing though.

Absolutely Loved it

First and foremost, I loved that the story was set in New York, specifically in the tri-state area. As a Bronx resident, I truly appreciated the numerous references to familiar places.

The storyline captivated me. The main character endured mistreatment throughout her life, and when she finally experienced something positive, she struggled with feelings of unworthiness.

Then came a plot twist that was entirely unexpected yet deeply satisfying. When the truth was revealed, I felt a rush of excitement. Everything she believed about herself was turned on its head; she was so much more than she realized.

I eagerly anticipate diving into book two!

WOW!

I gotta say, I wasn’t expecting to complete be sucked into this one. Elyse… I have so much to say…. I love her, I’m disappointed in her, I’m cheering for her. Kiara- I cannot stand. Damian needs to die. Sebastian is worth fighting for even if he has some outlooks of life he needs to relook at lol. There’s so many surprises and twists in here. It was accidental that I stumbled upon this book but boy oh boy I’m hooked. I’ll be impatiently waiting the series because I see it’s gunna be epic!! Well done!

The story was fun and interesting, however, the writing is not coherent. It is difficult to understand what is going on, because not is written clearly. I had to reread many parts just to figure out what was happening. I liked the story, but the writing is a major down fall.

Also, it drags on sometimes on a few scenes, that don’t really need to be there, and the times it jumps from one scene to another without much detail of what happened in between is irritating.

I don’t think I’ll be reading the second book.

Great new series

The zforbidden Wolf is the first book in a new series that held me captivated from the first paragraph. It was a new world take to the shifter genre then Mrs Claire previously published but no less a great storyline. The characters interactions told a great tale and all the emotions readers enjoy made this book a perfect package. Excited to see where the story goes from here.

Ok, for the record I hate cliffhangers (knowing it is at the end of story.

With that being said, the female main character is finding her strength, her roles who she really is. There is betrayal on a few fronts. The main character sounds hot and interesting. He is selfless in dealing with his squeeze. Again you'll see his growth too.

All in all it is a good read.

Truth

Truth is a jagged knife. It's cut is painful. It's also a carterization tool. It stops bleeding and allows healing to occur. Elyse had been infected by lies from birth. Kiana was infected worse. She believed the lies. Sebastian brought all of this to light with a single truth. Elyse was his fated mate. Now all the corruption and infection is being brought to light. The source of the infection is a single wolf, Damien.

Forgiveness

Spoiler

I really liked the love interest. I could have loved the MC, but she engaged in a common mistake. Forgiving anything. I would never forgive verbally and physically abusive people who tries to kill me. Ones that never showed an ounce of love or care. She literally just want to let them go to allow them to try to kill her again.

DNF: @37%, I scrolled to wedding scene and skimmed that. I read maybe 3 pages of this book before I skimmed and then quit skimming and scrolled through. There is a lot of movie references in this book, like a lot. Also a lot of what felt fluff.

this was….different

So many PNR/shifter romances are a bit too formulaic but not this one.

Elyse is friggin hilarious. I love the snark and banter and while some plot points are predictable, overall this is a fresh take on a played out genre. I’m really enjoying it!

Eh, I don't know. Held my interest enough to finish it. There are so many typos. The movie references were getting old. Several references to street names in NYC that I couldn't follow. But the story was decent. I might read the second book? I'm not sure with all the typos.

I liked it

It's a little different, less about insta-love and more about the characters. I didn't care for how everything played out, and I'm left with more questions than answers. Most of the questions begin with "why." I think I like enough to read book2.
