Better to die on our own terms than to live in bond.

We have made our choices. We die together and free. We die without fear or regret.

My. This was … another punch in the gut. But the pain was exquisite.

This 3rd volume in the Wonder Woman: Historia trilogy about how Diana was born gives us the reckoning. After the act of a young Amazon in the 2nd volume, the male gods know. And they will not suffer the insubordination of women. But when necessary, Amazons will fight and die. However, not all people are the same and some might not be capable of losing everyone they love. This, however, can be condemning. If it is, in the end, or if it’s a blessing in disguise is up for the reader to decide.

As in the previous 2 volumes, the artwork was simply stunning. I‘d say, with confidence, that this is my favorite artwork in ANY comicbook. Hands down.

The beauty is indisputable. But I can tell you that the writing is marvelous as well. Poignant and impactful indeed.

In fact, I love this trilogy so much that I will get the books in print for my shelf. They are absolutely worth it.

All three volumes together make up one hell of a good, serious, solid story. The artwork is some of the best, as is the subject material.

Want to know the beginnings and the full tragedy of the Amazons in DC, as well as the birth of Diana?

It's all here. The tragedies run deep, as is the need to fight, to fight against fate, injustice, and of course, Zeus.

The war is in full swing in this volume, and it is everything I hoped it would be.

This series was so Amazing. Definitely top 10 runs to come out in 2022. After the unforgivable act committed in issue 2, Zeus is pissed and has begun sending wave after wave of warriors to wipe out these amazons. They put up a good fight and it is tragic and sad as hell. Nicola Scott does a wonderful job with the art depicting the horror that is war. Man, this takes you on an emotional roller coaster. If you haven’t read this, I highly recommend you do.

It’s a brilliant, moving, inspirational, and an aesthetically absolutely gorgeous and stunning finale to the series. I loved every page and frame of it . It’s feminist rereading and rewriting of Greek myths reminds me of Christa Wolf’s Kassandra , but with a hopeful twist at the end of story.

I can barely fathom the greatness of what the creative team accomplishes here. Kelly Sue DeConnick has such a sharp, timely take on Wonder Woman and Greek myth lore. She takes full advantage of the fact that the same myths have concurrent iterations without dismissing the partiality of every existing version. This is unapologetically the epic story of the amazons' version. Every minor change regarding what we've known to be their origin feels truer because of that. I especially appreciate the intricate tribes of the amazons, Hippolyta's role in them, and the origin of "Paradise" Island.

Also, among the many writers who have made an effort to portray the gods in Wonder Woman stories-many have made them fully present characters, like Pérez, or hidden, but ever-present observers, like more recent Rucka-, DeConnick certainly strikes a much coveted but hardly achieved balance between humanity and theatricality. Her gods are conscious of their self-centered games; still, we feel their pain and loss like we would with any family of characters with a complicated background. Damn, I even felt for Zeus' loss in here. Feeling bad for Zeus in a Wonder Woman comic! Who would've thought?

Finally, I am so freaking glad Nicola Scott got to bring to life two of the most seminal works in Wonder Woman's comic book history in recent years, this and Year One. Her vision and care to each panel bring diversity, historic accuracy, richness, inventiveness, and, above all, much-needed cohesion to the amazons and their world in a way we had never seen before. She is, for me, the definitive Wonder Woman artist, and I pray she gets many more Wonder Woman stories to tell, in this series too.

This is the best volume of this series so far and one of the best Wonder Woman stories ever published. Make sure you don't miss it.

So beautiful and also so, so sad. A bit like me most days. This trilogy of stories about the origins of the Amazons was incredible. The different artists who worked on each comic should be commended on their exquisite detail in every image.
If you love women, the real housewives, Kylie Minogue, men wearing not much clothing and some of the best character designs I’ve seen since an Alan Moore comic, you must read this comic.

Just wow.
Not many Black Label titles were great, sure some were good, some were awfully bad but some were brilliant. And Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons is one of them. Not only you can enjoy marvelous, beautiful artwork, but the story is really good. Loved serious parts, love those which were supposed to be amusing, loved it all. And that says something when I am the person who usually doesn’t enjoy comic books with so many women in them.

This was a superb conclusion to the series. Feminist clash of the titans style. But with utterly gorgeous art work. The twists and turns on myths and stories and tying it into the comics was fantastic. So much tragedy. And also a little hope. Really wonderful series. Definitely one to re-read.

This series is a MASTERPIECE! Just three volumes, but probably one of the best I’ve ever read. W don’t know yet the plans for James Gunn’s live-action adaptation of “Paradise Lost”, but if he also takes inspiration from this series, I’m here for it!

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons Book 3 is an excellent conclusion to a stunning series. All three books carry a story about women empowerment and freedom, and they bring to light the realities of many women throughout history and the injustices they faced. Book 3 is powerful and poetic as it offers an honest and sorrowful ending.

In Book 1, the goddesses of Olympus created the Amazons to fight for and protect the women of Earth. And even though Zeus forbade them from interfering, they did it anyway. Book 3 is essentially a big middle finger to Zeus and it is incredible to witness.

Something that stood out to me is how clever and calculated Hera is. With her thousand thousand eyes, she is constantly aware of all of the injustices against women and she knows how this will end, and yet she never gives up hope. She knows what she must do to help the Amazons, even if her actions seem cruel at first. Ultimately, Hera’s motive is to fight for and protect women, too.

Hippolyta and the other Amazon Queens give their all as they fight for their lives and freedom in Book 3, and in doing so we learn what it means to be an Amazon. Among the sorrow, there is bravery, love and sisterhood. Among the betrayal, there is still hope.

This series is a masterpiece and Kelly Sue DeConnick’s writing is a force to be reckoned with. I love how each book has a different artist, and Nicola Scott created some elegant and iconic art in this third installment.

As I said in my previous reviews of Books 1 and 2, this story feels like something I’ve always wanted. Now I know it’s something I’ve always needed, too. The feminist and witchy vibes are incredible, the social commentary is on point, and the art is always breathtaking. This is one of the best comics I’ve ever read and I’m proud to call it one of my favourite books.

I bought Volume 3 as soon as it hit the shelves. As a matter of fact, I was chomping at the bit to read how the story would continue (calling shops to find out who had it). It took me this long to read and finish Volume 3. Why? Because it was ultimately going to be unsatisfactory.

I gave this three stars for the artwork. It would’ve been two stars for the story.

Why is it unsatisfying? It was rushed. I think I would’ve preferred it if the story stopped before they got to Thymiscara. Diana’s introduction into the story is super rushed and shoe horned in. We don’t need her in this story. The characters they introduced - the Queens of the six Amazon tribes should have been more fleshed out versus rushing to get to Diana and wrap this up. Hippolyta could’ve used some space. The possible friction between groups of women would’ve been a good story thread. Any movement has different goals. The friction alone between mortal and goddess born women would’ve been cool.

This is supposed to be about the Amazons but not really. Let’s focus on Hippolyta and jump to Diana cause no one else exists. They didn’t even do anything with Tarpeia’s character going against the group and speeding their “demise”.

So yeah, the characters were thin. I wanted deeper tension and machinations. This is the second DC Black label series I’ve read and there’s big ambitions but weak stories that are rushed.

The artwork was good. But Volume 2 and 3 had a more realistic style. I loved Phil Jimenez’s style in Volume 1. He hit it out of the park and the mini series did not recover. I wish he could’ve done the art on all three volumes.

Good effort but it didn’t live up to expectations.

A phenomenal retelling of the Amazons' origins, that throws in little changes that keeps you guessing while also fitting in with the mythos. I especially love the inclusion of Hippolyta having an adopted daughter and losing her in the war between The Amazons and the male gods. It really adds another layer to Diana's origin in my opinion. The artwork was absolutely breathtaking, by one of my favorite artists in Nicola Scott. I was just stunned by each page in this. I really hope there is another volume of Historia, maybe since the origin of the Amazons is done we could focus on another Wonder Woman related character. There is just so much you can do with this concept and I love it for that.

This is Not the Kindle edition as the entry notes, but rather the in hand beautifully crafted large graphic novel. A true and blessed treasure. Something is wrong with Goodreads, as I cannot change format.
Magnificent Art. A truly phenomenal story. This story expands positively changes the history of the amazons. This telling enriches the women of the Isle of Themyscira. Queen Hippolyta becomes a much more rich and wizened character from this telling. Diana's finds herself the bearer of multiple Goddesses blessings and attention. A grand conclusion to this masterwork!

An excellent and epic conclusion to this Black Label series. Not only does it add so much depth to the lore behind the Amazons, but it create such a triumphant origin to Wonder Woman.

The art once again is immaculate. A perfect blend between Phil Jimenez’s and Gene Ha’s styles, Nicola Scott mixes in beautiful spreads and set pieces as well as adds fine details in the anatomy of the characters.

There is little more I can say that I haven’t said already, but having now completed the series I can honestly say this has been the best Black Label series and possible DC series I have ever read.

Hmmm. Comics may just not be my thing. The art is great, but the text scant. The art doesn't flesh out the story in a way it deserves. IMHO, these short snippets should all be illustrated by the same artist to have consistency in how the characters are portrayed and should be longer and more detailed. The characters should be more fully developed; it seems the series leans heavily on the reader's knowledge of mythology. I read #1-#3 (all that is now available) in quick succession, but I'm not sure I will continue the series if further episodes are released.

Collectively, this series deliberately uses three different artists to sketch together the story of the whole. This in itself feels compact, although not always as tightly even as perhaps the author would want (to a reader - it’s very clear that she feels the internal cohesion intensely). I have mixed feelings. It’s good, but perhaps not as brilliant as it could be. Or is it brilliant, with moments not as good as they could shine. Anyway, I liked it, but felt it wasn’t quite the story I wanted, in the end.

This series was exceptional. It's been quite a while since I had read the earlier issues, so it took me a bit to get back into the story, but it was definitely worth it. This series is SO good, in both art quality and story. I'm definitely going to reread this series as a whole, because I'm pretty sure reading all three issues in succession is going to be even better.

This series was incredible! A great history of Hippolyta and The Amazons with stunning artwork. Their history is not all flowing robes and races on the beach. It is full of difficult choices, war and sacrifices. "We are born to die. But also to live and learn and hurt and grow, and all through it, to love. To love our lives, our fellows, and when we are very brave...ourselves."

I like the idea of the comic but sadly the story is a bit stretched and it doesn't bring enough depth in the characters and I don't like the ending at all...
The ending is bad for women but it could have been so much more.
