Lasting Lessons is Whitey’s sixth collection of essays. In his first book, Staying Put in Lane County—published in 2015—he recounted his activities and musings during the 2014 calendar year when he purposely never left his home county. That was followed by Words from the 2004-2008; Words from the 2009-2011; and Sixty-Four Trips Around the Sun. His fifth book, The Trees of Eugene, was a collection of tree-related essays written over a period of almost three decades. In Lasting Lessons, Whitey is bouncing back and forth, once again, between his experiences in the forests of the West Cascades and those he’s had in the city of Eugene—with several brief detours to Europe, where he lived and worked in the 1970s. Along the way, the reader is treated to Whitey’s inimitable and lively prose, whether he’s describing a close encounter with a flock of golden-crowned kinglets or a very brief but charming conversation with a little girl at the Soviet Embassy in Bern, Switzerland.
