The Unperfects

Rate this book
Find out just how unperfect life can be in #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken’s steamy new adult romance, The Unperfects. I saw her. Liked her instantly. May have slept with her twice only to… well, never mind. It gets confusing after that point. You see, there are two of them. Identical twins. All I wanted was a vacation from the bullshit but what I got was evil twin number one and innocent twin number two. They say things come in threes, so help me God, if there’s another. I’m healing from past trauma but may have created more for my future. Anyone got any sage? A candle? At this point, I’d take Barney. Send help. Love, Quinn

ARC kindly received for an honest review.

This one is hard for me to review because I really love RVD books for the most part, but lately it's felt more and more like what I'm reading is just a ramble of words that's confusing and without proper editing. In saying that though, something about this still hooked me, and I was curious enough to push through and see where things went.

I liked Quinn and I liked Chloe (for the most part, she did some things I did not agree with). I enjoyed the cameo's from other RVD worlds and there were some really fun moments in this. I did not like Sophie at all, and in the end things felt unresolved with how they left in terms of her.

I read this book in only a day and I enjoyed it, but I miss the old RVD writing compared to this.

This book is difficult for me to review. I’ve been a big fan of RVD for awhile now, but her last few books have been a bit off for me - this one included. Maybe I’m too old and her characters are too young. I just feel like a bunch of the writing is just a rambling of thoughts all at high speed. Word vomit. I could skim pages and not miss anything important.

I read book one in this series and rated it four stars. That was a stretch for me. Quinn, the best friend from The Perfects, is the main character in this book. I really liked him in book one and was glad he was getting his story and happy ending. It’s a definite insta-love between Quinn and Chloe. Not a fan of that trope, though.

I did like the chronic illness representation and how the author tried to adequately portray it.

Sophie is a terrible person. Who does that to their twin sister?

This is a relatively short book, under 250 pages, and it starts out at warp speed. Maybe if it was a bit longer, things could have been fleshed out more.

The cover is beautiful!

Thank you to the author for a #gifted copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Was anyone else’s stomach in knots while reading this book? I swear I felt sick to my stomach practically the entire time. I wanted to stop reading and yet I couldn’t. I needed to know that things were going to work out!

I was completely shocked at what transpired with these twins. Didn’t take a solid breath til I closed my kindle. Went in blind and I’m glad I did. Chloe and Quinn sure did have mountains to climb before they were able to breathe easy and fully enjoy each other. Whew! Past hurts and broken trusts make life way too difficult.

Also the portrayal of this specific chronic illness was spot on. I have a friend who suffers and I remember her telling me a the various symptoms.

Side note: seeing some beloved past characters made me smile. I love when they pop in from time to time.

I’m not quite sure I know where to begin. My emotions are all over the place. Quinn and Chloe were perfectly unperfect. The story itself deals with sensitive subject matter; I thought it was handled with heartbreaking truth, and Van Dyken mastered the art of how to balance a not always pleasant reality with laughter; it truly is good for the soul.

Chloe stole my heart immediately, as I’m sure she will for many others, especially those with chronic illnesses. I can generally find something to relate to in a lot of fictional characters, but in this instance, it wasn’t for the usual reasons. This time it had more to do with feeling "seen," thoughts, fears, and others' actions that are so similar to my own life.

I don’t want it to sound as though the sum of all of Chloe’s character is chronic illness; I assure you, that’s the furthest thing from true. She’s quick-witted, sweet, and so incredibly strong. Quinn was all heart, and that loving heart of his had been put through the ringer. I adored him so much more for the uniqueness of his character. He was incredibly sweet, with moments of awkward rambling and major "hot nerd" vibes, but it was his unconditional love and loyalty that made me love him the most.

There was an instant connection between them, and the best part about it was that it started with the absolute best meet cute in the history of meet cutes. It was awkward, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more epic dynamic of witty dialogue before. It created such a unique dynamic between the two of them. I think because it started in a "physically" awkward situation, but the immediate connection began with their equally witty minds, and from there it became a bone-deep type of connection.

My feels are going to be haywire for days after this rollercoaster. Every page carried an underlying dose of heavy heartache, but RVD made damn sure that wouldn’t be the emotion you walked away with. A brand new story with tons of heart, laughter, homicidal levels of anger, and mounds of compassion, then when you add the overflowing of emotions that come with some of the most beloved RVD characters, I’m not sure I could have asked for a more impeccably unperfect top read of 2023. After all, we’re all a little unperfect, although after spending my morning with Chloe and Quinn,
"The Mafia. Football. Rockstars..."
I feel nothing short of perfect.
Sometimes the universe (AKA an author and her assistant) knows exactly what you need. A mesmerizingly chaotic escape from reality.

The Unperfects was an all-consuming, unique blend of soul-searing chemistry, a swoony hero, a strong AF heroine, angst and laughter, Olympic-level sarcasm and witty banter, and steam. Through the tears, laughter, and a visit from my favorite mafia men, not only did my mind get the reprieve it was craving, but my heart feels a million times lighter as well.

Side note.
As someone who lives with chronic illnesses that have no cure and will continue to get worse, I can say with a deep understanding that if I didn’t take it one moment at a time and a whole slew of more often than not inappropriately dark jokes, I would end up in a dark place that would only make those I love worry more than they do. I appreciate the very real way RVD touches on chronic illnesses. This isn’t the first, and I’m sure it won’t be the last, and I’m truly grateful for that. She offers people who have all sorts of chronic illnesses an opportunity to feel seen, to not feel alone, and to know that someone out there has many of the same thoughts and emotions that you do, ones that those around you don’t understand. On the other side, I hope there are people who hold on tight to this knowledge and insights into the mind of someone with chronic illness. Understanding and compassion go a long way. In a world full of Sophies, be a Jill.

unperfectsI don't even really know where to begin with The Unperfects. It was just a lot. Over the top drama and some just crazy things going on. I am not as up on her previous books set in Seaside so not all the cameos landed for me. But, I think a lot of other readers would appreciate them.

Quinn and Chloe...I don't even know what to say. They have a really cute meet-cute. After that, things get soap opera dramatic. Its crazy. They both have a LOT of baggage. Chloe is a great heroine-she is funny and endearing. The chronic illness rep is really great in the story. Quinn is a great hero as well-charming and just a touch nerdy at times. So hot. Now, Sophie, Chloe's twin...she is a horrible person. Like, just awful. I wanted to feel for her, but she is just not okay! She made me so mad. I had to skip to the end to make sure things were going to work out because I was just not sure it was going to have an HEA (and you all know, for me, its HEA or GTFO).

After it is all said and done, I enjoyed The Unperfects. It was a bit overwhelming at times and occasionally confusing. But, it was also adorable and heartwarming. I think this is a book that will be a complete hit or a total miss with readers-you will either love it or DNF. I didn't love all of it, but I didn't give up, so maybe others will agree with me and fall in the middle somewhere.

  POV: 1st
  Tears: a few
  Trope: evil twin, new adult
  Triggers:
  Series/Standalone: stand alone
  Cliffhanger:
  HEA:

other angsty, new adult romances like Stay With Me by Fiorino, Fallen Crest by Tijan, The Mad Tatter by JM Darhower...then you will probably like The Unperfects!

Rachel has out done herself again. This wild ride of banter mixed with moments that will have your eyes water from all the feels will hook you in from the very beginning. Quinn goes to seaside to relax and get away from things going on at home. But when he goes bungee jumping things take a turn. He literally falls in Chloe’s lap while she’s canoeing. Quinn’s banter is more than just hilarious and the fact that Chloe goes with it all and even joins in the banter has me loving her character as well. Insert her twin Sophie who has her own issues and jealousy towards Chloe and you have the perfect mixture for drama and chaos. Her feelings towards Chloe and the fact that she has Lupus is not how a sister should feel, but add in that they’re twins I can understand to a certain point. But the betrayals and backstabbing she does to Chloe are unforgivable in my opinion. Even through all of that Quinn and Chloe pull through and find their HEA. Add in the cameos of rockstars, actors, football players and the mafia and you have laughs galore. I can’t express how much I loved this book, the feels, the laughs and all. Definitely a must read you won’t want to put down or miss. Thank you for the hangover Rachel, can’t wait for whatever you have up your sleeve next.

Rachel Van Dyken (RVD) jumps into this story feet first. The Unperfects starts like a hurricane. It is fast paced with crazy twists and insta-love, with a side of "What did I just read?" There are a lot of references to characters from previous books and series. A huge scene at the end spans at least 15 books and eight series! Fans of RVD will love the references.

Nothing has to be perfect in this life, I think we just combine the perfect moments, and later when things turn unperfected, we remember the gifts we were given...

Overall The Unperfects was a fun, college/NA read. There was a lot of banter and many long tangents. Once you get through the first few chapters you will be hooked. There is also a serious side to The Unperfects that deals with chronic illness. It certainly gave me something to think about. It would be helpful to read The Perfects first but not a requirement.

You make your own journey even with the difficulties you suffer around you...

Rachel Van Dyken (RVD) is a favorite author for me. She writes a wide variety of tropes. I enjoy her work. She puts her heart and soul into every book that she writes. Looking forward to her next adventure. You never know what she will come up with next!

Just wow! This book was perfect. The instant chemistry, the plot, the twist, lies, betrayal, this book has it all.

Chloe’s life is full of trials. She has a chronic illness that can manifest at any time. Trying to live her life to the fullest, she never expected a beautiful man to literally fall from the sky. But will her sisters betrayal cost her everything?

Quinn is trying to survive. After losing the girl he thought he loved to his best friend, he’s taking a gap year. Living it up in Seaside was just what he needed. When he crashed in Chloe, she was everything he never knew he needed. What he don’t expect was her twin sister. Can Quinn see past Chloe’s lie?

5 fantastic stars! This book was well written and I loved seeing some of my absolute favorite RVD characters.

What the heck did I just read .. I'm looking at you RVD.

This is a fast paced storyline and I feel like I've done the equivalent of a marathon trying to keep up with the characters and all the feelings they provoked in me. I loved Chloe even though she made mistakes I am truly not sure what I would have done in her shoes. The banter between Quinn and Chloe and also with his friends had me laughing out loud. The cameos from previous characters made me giddy. I was happy to catch up with them all. I wasn't ready for the book to end and know when I've had time to think about it all I am still not truly sure who is who at the end and I loved that it had me questioning right until the last word.

This was a great, intense read.
Chloe is awesome! She is fun, trying to live her best life, has a good heart, and unfortunately is ill.
Quinn has been burned in the past, is caring, a good friend, and has a fun sense of humor.
I feel so bad for Chloe. Yes because of her condition, but mostly for having such an awful twin! Sophie is horrible and I can’t believe family could do that to each other.
Quinn gets treated unfairly. He finds things out in a bad way.
I also enjoyed the other side characters. They were all fun and entertaining. They also really come together when a friend is in need of help. I never read the books with those characters, but now I need to.
I did think these two fell pretty fast. It was a funny meet cute, but things escalated quickly and I think they could have slowed their roll a bit.
Overall, great read.

ahhh this story hits all the feels and delivers amazing swoonworthy moments!

once i started this book i didnt want to stop it hooked me from the first word, i think i spent most of this book with my anxiey ready to burst haha

Quinn and Chloe have it far from easy, the hurdles and bitterness they have to navigate mixed in with pain from the past and issues caused from this all add to make this a super angsty read that you cant look away from, with steamy moments, lots of laugh out loud moments, and moments that will make you all giddy its hard not to love it!

I knew going into this book that Quinn was going to be all over the place. For being so young he has experienced things that people never do in life. He has an old soul. I’ve been waiting for his story since we met him in The Perfects (Ambrose & Mary Belle). Quinn was alone for a long time, his family was never around and didn’t really speak with him. This was until he rekindled things with his best friend Ambrose and his girlfriend Mary Belle. Now the 2 of them were all he had, but still felt alone since he was always the third wheel. So after graduating he decided to take a gap year and figure himself and his life out. He would go to Seaside and just relax and do things he would never do, like bungee jump. Did I tell you he was scared of heights?

Chloe just wanted some time to herself, without her family making her feel like she was a burden or a problem. So she took the canoe out for peaceful day. It was anything but peaceful, when someone fell right in between her thighs. All she knew was his bungee cord had snapped and down he came. He was the most beautiful man she had ever seen and even with all the pain he was in, he still made her laugh in 2 seconds. There was something different about him, she knew instantly that she wanted to see him again. He was a light in her darkness.

Quinn never expected to find his person the way he did but life happens in the strangest ways. But after the first day they spent together he can tell she was keeping things from him, but even with the secrets he could not stay away. He would do anything for her, even if she did have the devil for a twin sister. He knew she was his forever, but when the lies come out, could he stay by her side, or will the cuts be too deep. Finding your other half falling to your death is rare, but forgiving them and trusting them again is another story.

It was not what I expected but loved the story line and even with everything going on, it made you laugh. Ohhhh and the Epilogue...I LOVED IT

Received ARC for my honest review and opinion.

This is the 2nd book in the series, Perfects is book #1. You don't need to read book 1. Each character is explained in this book #2.

Quinn - In the 1st book, Perfects we know Quinn is from a very wealthy family. He gets more money / gifts than actual love it seems from his family. Throw money at whatever problem and it will fix itself. Quinn finished high school and is now on a gap year, trying to figure out what he wants to do - which college he wants to go to. But, for now, he's in Seaside, on a vacation of sorts.

Chloe is in the right place at the right time and saves Quinn from falling / injury. Chloe seems like she would be a fun person. She is shy, until she gets to know you more then she will open up. Chloe has a chronic illness, she will faint / feel woozy at a drop of a hat. Telling people about it is her downfall. She doesn't want people to feel sorry for her, and she's unsure if she should tell Quinn or not. Chloe's downfall also is she has an identical twin sister, Sophie, of course is the opposite of Chloe.

I did think there were more 'characters' from various past books involved in this book that should have been. I love reading RVD books, but, you have Quinn talking with this person and this person and this person, it's like why are they involved in the story?

I did receive a free ARC copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.

I enjoyed the story in The Unperfects. It was a pretty light, easy read with characters I really liked. I’d been hoping to get more of Quinn’s story after being introduced to him in a previous book and I’m so glad we got to know him a little more in this one! Quinn seems like the type of guy you’d always want to have in your corner- he’ll make you laugh, hold you when you cry, always a good friend and is fiercely loyal. He’s everything Chloe has always wanted and the two hit it off immediately. Chloe is endearing and hard not to love I think, even if she can’t see that in herself. I’m not the biggest fan of the insta-love type stories, but this one intrigued me because of how well the characters are written. RVD makes it believable that two characters like this could have such a funny, perfect meet cute and as they say, the rest be history. I’m curious to know how some parts of this story will play out. I wonder if we’ll get character cameos of these characters in future books or another book about any of these characters. I would definitely read it if so. Speaking of character cameos, this book was full of Easter eggs with previous RVD characters I’ve known and loved so that was a really fun part of this story. Overall, I enjoyed this read and can’t wait to read whatever RVD puts out next! Thank you for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

The Unperfects was so good. This story had it all. It was funny, sweet, emotional, and romantic. I loved the banter and lol moments in this story. I was hooked from the start and could not wait to finish this book. I knew it was going to be a rollercoaster of emotions and I definitely felt a few. I loved Quinn before and in this story, he really stoled my heart. Rachel Van Dyken always does an awesome job writing her characters. Both Quinn and Chloe were amazing. They were so complex and felt very real. Both of them messed up in this story but at the end of the day managed to overcome those mistakes. Sophie was also an awesome character. Her actions and thoughts made her the villain of the story but she was also very easy to understand and love just a little bit. I loved all the cameos of the other characters and the ending was so good.

I loved Quinn in The Perfects and am so happy he has his own story now!

There’s a reason soap operas have been around for decades - there’s an audience for over the top dramatics and the same audience will love this story. You have the evil twin plot line with Sophie, Chloe’s sister, who will stop at nothing to hurt Chloe like she has been emotionally hurt. You have the love interest, Quinn, who immediately falls head over heels for Chloe. It’s a lot but entertaining nonetheless.

What did I love? The banter. RVD writes the best banter. I always laugh out loud in her books - she has a way of inserting the perfect comedic lines at the perfect time.

What did I not love? Instalove. I am not an instalove fan. I can take the over the top dramatic, crazy plot twists (it’s fiction, after all) but for some reason my mind struggles to accept Instalove stories.

All in all, good short read that kept me entertained!

The Unperfects is Rachel Van Dyken’s newest standalone. I do highly recommend reading The Perfects beforehand so you know Quinn’s full story.

When Chloe decided to go canoeing, she had no idea that a handsome, funny, and charming man would fall from the sky and land right between her thighs. She definitely isn’t complaining about it. Quinn made her feel alive, wanted, and normal. He didn’t realize after their first date about how much that meant to her.

Quinn was in Seaside, Oregon on vacation during his gap year. He was also there to heal his heart. He wasn’t looking for a woman who was his brightness in the dark. She was beautiful, witty, and fun. And after having sex, it was even more of everything including the confusion of his emotions and Chloe’s ups and downs.

I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say it involves secrets, heartache, and anger. It also involves love, loyalty, and friendships. It’s not my favorite RVD books but I was still hooked. I wanted to give out hugs and slaps. I did laugh too. I was all over the place with this one.

Different

I was not expecting Quinn's story to turn out like it did. While trying to mend his broken heart, he literally falls out of the sky only to land in Chloe's lap. He falls for her right away, not knowing her secret. When he meets her identical twin Sophie, he feels apprehension. He just doesn't know yet all of the drama that comes with her. Some major stuff happens and when Quinn finds out the truth, he feels sucked punched. Chloe is perfect to help Quinn but Sophie keeps making things difficult for her. When tragedy strikes, Quinn realizes the depth of his true feelings for Chloe. He just hopes it's not too late. I like the characters in the book, I just want to know what finally happens to Sophie.

An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review.

I will forever love RVDs books as each is unique and different from the next.

In The Unperfects we follow Quinn and Chloe, they have an insta love, chaotic meet cute and full speed ahead romance.

The book is what is advertised so you can't deny that for a moment.

I have a lot of mixed emotions about the story as a whole, as personally I'm not a huge fan of insta love and throw in the "evil" twin dynamic that went on, it was a perfectly good over the top, dramatic romance. Soemthimg I'm not too familiar with from RVD!

All I'll say is if what I've written speaks to you, then this book will be for you! It's not my favourite but I know there will be readers out there who will devour it!

“I like sweet things that know how to be naughty. Nothing has to be perfect in this life, I think we just combine the perfect moments, and later when things turn unperfected, we remember the gifts we were given, otherwise, how do you even survive?”

There are a lot of references to characters from previous books and series The banter between Quinn and Chloe and also with his friends had me laughing out loud and boy did Chloe and Quinn sure did have so many obstacles before they were able to breathe easy and fully enjoy each other. Definitely a must read you won’t want to put down or miss Thanks Rachel I'm now in Book hangover.

Quinn falls into Chloe’s lap… literally. His bungee cord snapped and Chloe happened to be in a canoe right underneath him. Their attraction and connection is immediate. Quinn is taking a gap year, moving past being hurt. And Chloe has her own secrets, and her twin sister is not helping.

Chloe’s twin, Sophie is vindictive and she has now set her sights on Quinn. And this is a game that Quinn didn’t agree too and it may just throw him over the edge.

This was a little too fast paced for me, and it took a turn that I didn’t really care for. I was still waiting for the ending to be a different twist. I did like Quinn and his protective, nurturing, steadfastness. But a man can only take so much. Can Quinn decide which twin is which and which one he wants to be with? You’ll have to one-click to find out.

I don't hate it but I am not in love with it. Lately, Rachel Van Dyken and I have not been hitting our groove. I am not sure what is happening but her latest stories have been missing that magic that used to captivate me. Or maybe I am just getting old, could be both? Who knows.

The trope is insta-love which isn't my favorite but sometimes you just need that head-over-heels escape. Quinn definitely deserved his HEA but I am on the fence if Chloe was worthy. Sophie was the absolute worst, but Rachel did a knock out job of representing chronic illness. And Rachel also sprinkled in cameos of some of my other favorite RVD works, which was my favorite part. They added some fun, playfulness to the story.

I love the amount of people who rallied around and helped Quinn as he not only healed his heart, but as he navigated finding his place in the world!

Quinn and his lady love’s story is hilarious but the cutest, most random meet cute that you can’t deny fate exists! Things progress quickly but when life has constantly handed you the most brutal heartbreaks they can’t help but hold on tight!

I loved the many stellar cameos because Quinn needed all the help he could get when it came to finally finding his forever! This was such a quick and easy read. Yes there was some brutal moments because nothing stings worse than the betrayal of a sibling but the love between our hero and heroine was so strong and so Beau couldn’t help but just devour their story in one sitting!

“I never stood up for myself and I lost him because of my silence.”

In true RVD style…this book is like no other….there are so many moving pieces…your emotions will be flying (you’ll appreciate that more later)…there is a beautiful delicate balance and rawness on some heartbreaking subjects.

“I fled my own house of isolation and loneliness, and was dropped into chaos, but sometimes the universe knows exactly what you need.”

Get ready for humor, heartbreak, discovery, anticipation, betrayal, friendship, chemistry, fear and healing. You’ll love the little reunion of past characters which is always a treat in Seaside.

“We hit something hard, and it hurts, but the hurt is what makes us feel, and when we feel we learn, at least some of us, but the point is, the ending doesn’t always have to be the same.”

It all started when Quinn fell from the sky and landed between Chloe's thighs....

Quinn and Chloe have a whirlwind romance, but Chloe's twin sister likes to steal what is Chloe's. She pretends to be Chloe and sleeps with Quinn. Chloe wants to tell, but if she does, her sister will expose another secret she keeps. So Chloe decides to keep quiet - what could go wrong?

This new adult book was a good read. The characters are all very likeable and relatable. There are crossover characters from RVD's other books, too. This book does deal with chronic illness, so be careful if that triggers you.

Overall, enjoyable and easy to read! One click it today!

This one was an okay read for me. It was a good time filler.

I enjoyed the play on emotions with this one. The vindictive twin was easy to dislike while Chloe and Quinn have wonderful chemistry that you just root for them. I felt bad that Sophie put Quinn in the situation/position she did, but then again, her choices and Chloe's and Quinn's reactions following her actions are what aid this story along to the conclusion.

While I did like this story, it wasn't quite at the tippy top of my faves from this author, who usually sits in my top 5. And while I felt this one was maybe rushed along, it was still an enjoyable read and may be one that readers of romance love. So I will definitely recommend reading this one.

Chloe is a young and beautiful young women but she has a chronic illness.
Quinn has not had the best of luck in love and hopes that has changed after meeting Chloe.
This story is set in the wonderful small town of Seaside Oregon, which I have come to love from some of Rachel’s other books. This was a great story that deals with some tough issues. However, it also had fun moments, things that made me laugh, intimate and loving moments. I loved most of the characters, there was one I didn’t particularly care for. It had an original storyline, and I absolutely Loved the ending!! I would definitely recommend The UNPERFECTS!!

What the heck did I just read!?!

Lol. RVD, I don't know whether to bow or check your pulse. The Unperfects is a whole lot to unpack. A whole Lot - yes, with a capital L.

Crazy. You will go crazy. You will be narrowing your eyes and quirking your head throughout this book. Chloe is a special girl but Quinn is pretty amazing too. With their individual histories this is going to get messy, but combined this is a tornado at a concert portapotty station. Shi-tuff flying everywhere. Duck and pray. Duck and pray because when the wind stops you won't recognize anything anymore.

P.S. I love this crazy vacation. Also I need to vacation here! Enjoy the cameos and chaos! I know I did!

‘The Mafia. Football. Rockstars. Vodka. The floor is Lava.’

I mean RVD said it all in one line! Do I need to say more?? lol

The Unperfects is a perfect escape back to Seaside with all & I mean ALL of our faves!

Chloe & Quinn have an interesting meet cute😉 And life kinda throws everything at them at warp speed but they are there for each other when it matters💕

PS…I loved it & the rich business men who crashed their party🖤

🖤fave quote📖✍🏻

“I like sweet things that know how to be naughty. Nothing has to be perfect in this life, I think we just combine the perfect moments, and later when things turn unperfected, we remember the gifts we were given, otherwise, how do you even survive?”
