This author has also released books under the name Chrissie Manby.

Encouraged my by English teacher, Mrs. Pocock, I published my first short story in Just Seventeen when I was fourteen years old. The story was called ‘Whatever happened to the wonderful boy I fell in love with’ and I published it under the pseudonym ‘Carolyn Lane’ because it largely consisted of a transcript of an argument I’d had with my boyfriend. I bought a black denim jacket from C & A with the proceeds.

I continued to contribute short stories to Just Seventeen to help pay my way through university. I studied Experimental Psychology at St Edmund Hall in Oxford. Alas, I devoted rather too much time to my social life and staggered away with an unimpressive 2:2. In retrospect, that 2:2 saved my life. It meant that none of the graduate training schemes I had hoped to join would have me. I wouldn’t become an accountant after all. I moved to London and took a series of temp jobs to support myself. It was while I was working at Prelude Audio Books, a company which took erotic ‘classics’ and put them on tape, that I met my first real novelist: David Garnett.

David is a very well respected science fiction writer, who once dabbled with writing erotica under the name Angelique. Prelude was recording the Angelique novels. One afternoon, David spent a couple of hours sitting on my desk, waiting for my boss to come back from a very long publishing lunch to discuss some unpaid royalties. I told David I’d always wanted to be a writer. He dared me to write a novella like Angelique’s. A few weeks later, I handed him my first full-length manuscript. David cast his experienced eye over my scribblings, helped me tweak it and then passed it on to his editor at Little Brown. Incredibly, she made an offer on it. My dream of becoming a proper writer was reborn.

That first book was called ‘Inspiration’. It centred on the sexual shenanigans of a group of artists in St Ives. Wary of embarrassing my parents, I published ‘Inspiration’ as Stephanie Ash. Four more Stephanie Ash novellas followed, helping me to pay my rent and attract the attention of a literary agent. In 1997, I published my first Chris Manby novel, ‘Flatmates’…

Thirteen novels on the single life as Chris Manby later, I’ve just published ‘Getting Over Mr. Right’ as ‘Chrissie Manby’ (apparently too many people are under the impression that I am a bloke!).

I live in London and when I’m not writing (in fact, even when I’m supposed to be writing) I spend an awful lot of time on Twitter. Follow me on @chrissiemanby.

Oh dear.

I received this book for free with a magazine a few years ago and never got around to reading it however I recently finished a 700+ page book and felt the need to read something small, easy and quick and thought that this would be the answer.

First thing that struck me with this book was the stereotypically characters:

There's the silly heiress who spends money on ridiculous clothes and bags and updates her facebook status to gain attention. The girl also tries on wedding dresses in France because there is a photo of her 'boyfriend' with a Tiffany bag on the internet. Don't even get me started on the kidnapping plan.

There's the stupid best friend who encourages all the outrageous schemes.

There's the 'eco-warriors' who are stereotypical hippies who don't wash and live in a gross house.

Etc. etc.

The characters don't develop naturally. One page Birdie is self centred and the next she is all concerned with the environment.

Something else that irritated me was how the author had lazily made connections for the characters, for example, the gardener is fired by Birdie and then the Clemency (the PA) goes to a party of an old school friend who happens to be one of the eco-warriors and while at this party she offers the job to Nate, who happened to have done a demonstration at the Granddad's development. Birdie just happened to be double jointed so could slip her foot out of the ankle tag etc.

One good thing about this book? It was short.

Cher from Clueless meets Paris Hilton. As other reviews have said, it was quite jarring how fast she switched from socialite to eco warrior! Other than that, I enjoyed the read.

I read a book called "Crazy in Love", its written by "Chris Manby". The book is a funny and interesting book. There is a girl called Birdie Sederburg, she's a fashion lady and always looking forward for love. Once she got a crush on a man called Dean Stevenson. Birdie saw Dean on a traffic road way, he was blond, had blue eyes and a flashed muscled Abs he was her type, so she had a huge crush on him. Then the crazy Birdie crashed him on the back of his car so she can take his number, but actually he was really angry but he accepted her apology. She asked him for his number but he didn’t gave her. Moving forwardly, She saw him again and the same story happened she crushed him at the back and asked him again about his number but he told her I want your license number. She gave that attractive look with her eyes and told him: "I owe you and I should take you to dinner". He couldn’t say no and he went with her. She kept sending him flowers to his office and Dean's boss knew that her father has a big company and she could ask her father a favor for Dean's career. Dean's boss kept telling Dean that he should stay with her. So Dean listened to his boss and kept using Birdie just for his career and she knew that but she was waiting for him to fall in love with her. So how far would you go for love?
This book teaches you how to stay cool about love even though your relationship is complicated and let you stick to your lover.

well what a load of rubbish! I actually hated the main character and while I'm well aware of redemption stories I don't think someone can go from airhead heiress to eco warrior in less than a paragraph no matter how many crickets they eat! Also most of the characters were so one dimensional it was laughable!

The first part of the book is quite interesting, but the end is not so interesting at all. I had feeling like author just got feedback from publisher, that the limut of pages is achived and she need to fit the end of the story within couple last chapters

2nd time ive read and again another brilliant book by chris manby.
Its easy to read, not a heavy story and your reading everyones point of view.
The only downside is i found the ending rushed and feel that a follow up could be done.
Give it a couple of years and i will re-read it.

I have really taken to listening to audiobooks in the car. I find they pass the time really well. What would normally be a boring and dull journey can now be interesting and quick. I love that I can put the CD in and just drift off into the world of a book, still concentrating on the driving of course!

The book opened with the high pitched, kind of winey voice, of Birdie Sederburg, which was read by Jennifer Woodward who did a very good job of changing and making her voice versatile for all the different characters. Birdie starts talking about how she and Dean first met, "I literally bumped into him". Birdie is the definition of the stereotypical "Oh My God!" American spoilt brat. She is what in Britain would be called an It Girl. She is the heiress of a multi-billion dollar golf franchise.

Julius Sederburg was the rich and wealthy creator of the Sederburg golf resorts. He had worked from a very young age to build up his business and had taken pride in his achievements. However, through this success, he had also raised a very self-centred and ignorant granddaughter, who does not have any consideration of appreciation for anyone or anything that does not affect her little bubble of a world. Nate is an eco-warrior who wants to do the right thing for the environment and its inhabitants. He decides to do this by interrupting the breaking soil ceremony at the latest golf resort. Julius slams Nate's opinion and has him removed from the scene. Nate decides to make his voice heard more he is going to work for Birdie to see if his environment campaign can be heard.

The book is quite slow to start with and it takes a number of chapters for something to actually happen. Birdie decides to create her own plan in order to win Dean's heart once and for all. I know this is the intention of the author and it completely worked, but what an absolute and utter idiot Birdie is. She creates a ridiculous plan to achieve Dean and she goes about the most idiotic way about it. The whole time I was listening to the story I couldn't quite believe that Birdie had taken on this choice and was continuing to develop her plan. She had incorporated the help of her assistant and her best friend. They were going along with the plan, trying to make her aware of how dangerous and stupid she was.

The plan is in place to win back Dean, however, all goes wrong. I did get a little confused as to what had exactly happened at the fashion show which Birdie attends. There was a lot of commotion and a lot of disruption at the fashion show that I was unsure about what had happened. It took me a number of chapters to decide who had done what exactly and why. This was soon clarified and Birdie suddenly became aware of what a stupid and naive mistake she had made.

A range of common sense and some actual thought on how to recover from the disastrous situation Birdie finds herself in, Birdie is able to start to recover and find her way back to normal life. There is the question of whether her philosophy and perspective on life have been changed thanks to her decisions? Birdie does realise what she wants in life, who she wants and how she is going to get that. The first person she needs to deal with is Grandaddy, Julius Sederburg!

I had read a number of other reviews about this book and they had not been positive. However, I did enjoy the book once it had started to pick up pace. Approximately, the first 25 chapters are very mundane and similar. A lot of talk about the high life and what the life of a bimbo heiress is like. The action and interesting part of the book could have happened a lot earlier. I was surprised though with the outcome of the story. When it was made clear why Birdie ended up in the situation she did, that was unexpected.

Overall I probably wouldn't recommend this book to another but I did enjoy it, eventually. The author does portray the character of Birdie and Julius well but they are both characters which didn't need as much dialogue and description. There could have been a lot less than the 64 chapters which were in the story.

This is a story about a spoiled and self-centered heiress named Birdie Sederburg, who does everything to get what she wants, including Dean Stevenson. Dean is a surfer hunk and an actor who couldn’t care less for Birdie. Birdie has gone to great lengths just to get Dean’s attention and eventually be her boyfriend, i.e. bumping his car and sending him extravagant gifts. Dean, however, just agrees to date her because his manager tells him that it would give his show better ratings. And when Birdie finds out that Dean is dating his co-star she did ridiculous stuff to win him back, even paying some weirdo from the internet to stage-kidnap her. From there, her journey to self-realization started, with the help of his almost-kidnapper, Nate who was an eco-warrior and Birdie’s grandfather’s detractor.

My thoughts about the book:
1. The summary at the back of the book was pretty intriguing especially when it said that the main character got herself kidnapped thinking that her ex-boyfriend would come and rescue her and they would rekindle their lost love. Well, I thought that they actually love each other, but it turned out that it was only Birdie who was obsessing about Dean.

2. I was a little bit bored at the first few chapters (there were many chapters but they were only short). A lot of characters were introduced and they each had their own back stories. I didn’t see their relevance at the start since their follow-up stories were not immediately continued, especially Nate’s part. But at the latter part of the story I finally saw the connection between each character’s back stories.

3. Birdie’s naivety was so absurd but hilarious. Typically, stories about self-centered and spoiled rich kids would be irksome, but it was written in a way that you would want to read more and know the reason behind her childish attitude.

4. I just think that the moment when Birdie and Nate confessed their love for each other during their rescue was a bit too sudden. They just knew each other three or four days ago. They might have shared a few views in life, but I think it was too soon to declare their love for each other.

This book was not too deep nor too shallow, good for light reading.

Despite getting better as it went on, I found it really difficult to enjoy this book, and found myself ploughing through it just to get it over with.
The story follows Birdie, an heiress to the fortune of her grandfather, who is spoilt and has little regard for others. When she is dumped by an up and coming TV star, Birdie trys many thing to get him back, including paying to get herself kidnapped. But when this all goes wrong and she is kidnapped for real, she goes through a quick learning curve which leads to her escape, and finding herself.
So here are the 2 main problems with this novel. First, the characters were so shallow and underdeveloped I felt nothing for them at all. With Birdie I think this is the intention, but with others, such as Nate, Birdies fellow hostage, and Clemency her PA, I think the intention is for us to like them, but this didn't happen with me. I don't think they were developed enough, we don't find out about their history, and so to me they were just the same as the socialites in LA who we were supposed to dislike. So I didn't care what happened to them - if they escaped or died in captivity, it honestly didn't bother me. I had no feelings towards them at all, which I think a novel like this relies on.
I also found the plot very predictable. I knew that Birdie would find herself as this happens in nearly every kidnap story or film there is. I also guessed how her relationships would develop. I therefore had nothing to read on for, and meant that I experienced none of the humour this novel promised.
The story did get slightly more interesting during the aftermath of the kidnap, but it wasn't groundbreaking and so overall I failed to enjoy this and don't think I will look out for other things by this author in a hurry.

Reviewed on : 19 December 2010

I have read some of Chris Manby books and they are good. But I can't say the same for this. I had a hard time finishing this book.

First of all, the font was quite tiny making it hard to read. I wonder why she want to have this book printed in such a tiny font. To save paper and the environment so that it's coincide with a part of this book?

Secondly, the first half of the book of the book are dedicated to describing what a pampered and empty live that Birdie and her friends were having. Nothing better to do than updating their Facebook with every tiny things that they do and also creating false news for the Paparazzi to write.

The second half of the book was about how she want converted from her selfish ways to seeing the light of her empty existence and turn into a pro-environment supporter. Pretty much unbelievable.

For me it rate 1 star. Maybe I am getting to be too demanding in my reading?

Chris Manby delivers another warm, easy read. Crazy In Love fell a little short for me, and I think it's because of the extreme hilarities of the characters. The protagonist is a spoilt little rich girl with a penchant for car-crash outfits who has a sudden and expected change of heart.

I don't want to be too harsh on the book, as it is meant to be big and a little theatrical, but it just didn't feel even remotely realistic to me. I didn't sympathise with any of the characters, and there was no crushing on the leading man. (A very big tell in my opinion.)

BUT - it was vaguely enjoyable, and since it is set in sunny LA, I recommend this as pool-side reading. You don't need to concentrate on much, you can pretty much guess the entire plot with a brief skim of the blurb on the back, and it's outcomes.

This book mixes different worlds and surprisingly turns out well. You start off liking Dean Stevenson and loathing Birdie Sederburg and then when things start becoming clearer, you realize that they are not what they seem. The same goes for everyone else in the book as well, from Birdie's grandfather Julius, to her best friend Chipper, assistant Clemency, and the eco warrior Nate. In fact the only character I liked from beginning to the end was Nate.

All in all, you've got a melange of actors, celebrities who are famous for being (in)famous, and eco-warriors, and somehow it works extremely well.

Okay... Picked this book up randomly and never expected it to be so good. Extremely engaging humor, the book disgusts you in its early stages. The characters you hate at the start of the book start growing on you as you go on with the book.
Nate was my fav character in the book. Totally related to him. Efficient, funny and intelligent with a love for nature- the perfect guy :*
Birdie Chipper,- Grow on you as you keep on reading.
Dean- okay character, no opinions on him.
Clemency- Liked the character.
Beautiful book all in all. Predictable at parts, but extremely enjoyable!

I quite enjoyed this book, especially as the central character Birdie, reminded me so much of a certain Paris Hilton. However, what I wasn't expecting was the importance of ecological care of our planet that it raises, mostly thanks to Nate and his efforts to help in said department. It was nice to see Birdie, spoilt, rich beyond imagination and having never worked a day in her life, impacted so much upon meeting Nate and the things they experience. It just goes to show that just one person can influence and change another...

Despite finding it a little boring and slow at the beginning I gradually grew to love this book. The annoying Birdie and the naive Chipper even grew on me. There were a few character whom I still couldn't really feel empathy for like Clemency but most of the characters are at least tolerable.
It's a nice read for someone who wants more of a change in their characters and likes a lot of character development.
My advice for anyone who is about this start is to hang in there, it does get better and the gals do become less annoying.

Millionairess "Birdie" is a typical Hollywood socialite - think Paris Hilton. She lives for shopping, money and all things materialistic. She's also mean, mean, mean!

After falling for fellow Hollywood star Dean, the entire relationship is based on publicity stunts. He is in it for the headlines and not a lot else. Birdie, in desperation plots a kidnapping - of HERSELF in order to win Deans heart for real.

This is a really silly book - but strangely enjoyable and feed-good. If you're looking for a light bit of fluff, look no further! Chris Manby writes such guilty pleasures.

Overall I enjoyed this book, I finished it in a day and it was a short and sweet read. The satire humour is what made me like this book, it wasn’t taking itself seriously from page one, however sometimes I feel the author relied on second hand embarrassment as a form of humour which is a form of comedy I don’t like. The character developments were too swift and gave me a little whiplash but overall my issues with the book are far outweighed by my appreciation for it, hence the 4 stars. A nice read for a rainy day.

"Crazy In Love" is a funny, great and exciting book. You'll meet the problems with the fame, and you'll quickly be carried into the books history. It's good because it describes the famous life as something exciting, and then it makes you think that the book is exciting!
It's a good book, that you'll probably read more than one time.

2 for enjoyment (!) and 1 for plot.

I didn't have high hopes for this book, but I actually quite enjoyed it. To my surprise I actually liked Birdie at the end (though her sudden switch in character after a few nights with Nate wasn't altogether convincing). Overall, though, it was a really fun read. Might read again, but only if I'd forgotten the storyline.

I can't really class this book as one that you can actually 'read' although I did laugh a few times, I feel it lacked character.
I like the sudden twist on a twist with the three way kidnap, but that is about it!
It was nice to take a break from the proper novels I normally read but I'm afraid I will not be reading anything more in the near future by Chris Manby.

To be honest, this book did not appeal to me when I started reading it. But since I got it for free with a magazine, I thought I'd give it a go. The beginning of the book was so bad that I was considering not to continue with the book, but then I thought I may regret it. But when I was half way through the book, I actually started to like it.
