Eventually my family moved to West Texas where I grew up in the oil fields and ranches of the Colorado River valley northwest of San Angelo. After graduating from North Texas State University and spending a year in graduate school (focusing on 19th century European literature), I moved to Austin in 1970 where my wife, Joyce, and I still live.
Although I wanted to try my hand at writing fiction after graduate school, Joyce and I had two small children, and the often-rocky road to publishing and establishing a writing career seemed a risky proposition that I couldn’t afford to take at that point. I took an editing job with a small regional press and spent the next decade knocking around in a variety of jobs, including running my own small publishing company for a few years, and editing books in the humanities for the University of Texas Press.
Finally, in 1980, I decided I couldn’t wait any longer to try my hand at fiction. Knowing I couldn’t afford to write for nothing, I decided to increase my odds of getting published by researching what kinds of fiction had the best chance of finding a publisher. Mystery novels rose to the top of my research results. I don’t think I’d ever read a “mystery novel” at that time, but I immediately bought a representative collection of twenty-five popular, famous, and classic mystery novels, including British and European writers. After reading these, and many more, I realized that the “genre” encompassed a startling variety of work, everything from Mickey Spillane to Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Two years later I began my writing career by publishing two mystery novels in the same year. Thirty-odd years later I’ve just finished my 15th novel. Though I began writing in the mystery genre, I eventually went on to write fiction in other areas, mostly dealing with the criminal, national, and private intelligence professions.
When I’m not writing, I spend most of my time in my library. My other pleasure is gardening and landscape work, though where I live in the hilly streets of west Austin, “gardening” most often looks like wrestling with nature, rather than gently nurturing it. Still, though it’s a lot of work, it’s a great pleasure to watch things grow. Joyce and I now sit in the shade of trees that are forty feet tall that we planted when we first moved to this place nearly thirty years ago. That’s a good thing.

This story is interesting enough, for at least three reasons:
- it is a mixture between a thriller, a policier and psychological novel
- there are some strong characters, particularly Burden, whose words and ideas about life are quite interesting
- enjoying the reading and being anxious about the final are always signs of a good book.

Имаше някои залитания на автора, че не, такива неща не могат да станат в Америка, че американците едва ли не са божи кравички и не са способни на такова зло. Обаче, мексиканци, араби, мафиоти от други държави са все лоши и терористи. Ако успеете да преодолеете това и харесвате по-брутални сюжети, които ви карат да настръхвате, тази книга ще ви допадне.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. As usual in a David Lindsey book it keeps you engrossed. I don't understand why he has never had the success of authors like Harlan Cobben; his thrillers are just as good, if not better.

O carte ușoară pe care am citit-o repede.
Povestea în sine interesanta, scrisa binișor, doar ca pe alocuri m-a enervat, pt ca nu a existat momentul acela de tensiune, punctul culminant care sa îmi facă inima sa o ia la galop. E cumva liniara. Știi datele problemei și aștepți sa vezi finalul.
Personajele destul de șterse, niciunuia nu i s-a dat mai mult decât altuia.
Nu m-a dat pe spate însă nu a fost o lectura rea.
Din punctul meu de vedere e undeva între 3 și 4 steluțe. Ii dau 3. 🫡

An interesting fast paced plot with disturbing implications. The characters seemed real and their interactions came across as genuine. A satisfiying ending that was neither too blunt or too drawn out.

Titus Cain, a highly successful Texas tech businessman is suddenly faced with a new very unpleasant reality: he is the victim of a new form of high stakes financial kidnapping by an extremely ruthless Mexican terrorist who threatens kill Titus' family and friends unless he gives him $64 million via legal transactions. Despite orders not to seek outside help of any kind, Cain hires an ex-CIA agent, Garcia Burden, a specialist in these types of situations who demands complete obedience from Cain. Things don't smoothly because of Cain's hard headedness and inability to control his temper. It is the latter that disrupts the careful planning going into resolving the situation and completely jeopardizes the whole thing.

This was a quick, easy, and very good read. Lots of suspense and thrill. Unpredictable. Characters well developed. The antagonist, an evil man capable of committing heinous crimes... which he did. The protagonist, a little bit of weakling at first, but later becomes strong. However, the ending was somewhat disappointing, thus the 4-star rating rather than a 5. I was expecting more at the end. A surprise, a turn of events, an impostor... something. But, no. It ended like it supposed to. Nevertheless, this was a well written story. I look forward to reading more by Lindsey in the near future.

Listened to this on a trip to Chicago with my husband yesterday.
He and I really enjoyed it as Lou Diamond Phillips is an amazing narrator and would change his voice to suit each character which really enriched our listening pleasure.

Benny Chalmers se holbă pe fereastra deschisă a camionetei sale. Purta o cămașă kaki cu mâneci lungi, murdară și pătată de sudoare, blugi soioși și o pereche de cizme obosite de cowboy, înalte până aproape de genunchi. Avea fața roșie din pricina celor patruzeci și unu de ani petrecuți în soarele ținutului de graniță, dar fruntea îi era albă ca a unui cadavru, pe porțiunea unde fusese protejată de șapca lui, marca Stetson.
Era ora trei și douăzeci după-amiază și Chalmers stătea în mijlocul a aproximativ opt hectare și jumătate de pământ arid, cunoscut ecologiștilor sub numele de câmpiile din Sudul Texasului, și tuturor celorlalți oameni sub numele de ținutul Brush. În jur, pe o rază de trei sute de kilometri, nu era mai nimic, cu excepția unor ferme izolate. Ele se aflau aproape de granița cu Mexicul la doar două sute de metri distanță.
Soarele ardea. Cât puteai vedea cu ochii, în orice direcție, era un peisaj arid, nesfârșit, de tufișuri de gheara mâței și tufe de cactuși, de înălțimea unui om.

Vitele erau ținute într-un mare labirint de țarcuri, făcut din țevi vechi și ruginite. O rampă lungă din fier și lemn era așezată între țarcuri și partea din spate a remorcii masivului camion Wilson, cu trei punți și douăsprezece roți.
Un elicopter tocmai ateriză într-o tornadă de praf, la o sută de metri în stânga lui Chalmers. Un santaj de proportii epice, condimentat cu doua crime brutale si cu posibile altele, contraatacat de o echipa de profesionisti bine pusi la punct si cu tehnologie de inalta clasa - iata reteta aproape perfecta pentru un thriller tensionant, bine structurat, si cu rasturnari de situatie, precum este si cartea de fata. Desi pe alocuri pare putin neverosimila, actiunea este cu atat mai credibila deoarece ne destainuie amanunte dintr-o cu totul alta lume, cea a marilor criminali, o lume de care noi, oamenii de rand, nu avem cum sa stim si poate ca e mult mai bine sa nici nu stim. Desfasurata pe parcursul a patru zile, romanul ne ofera de toate: descrieri bine realizate ale locurilor, personaje credibile, unele chiar cinice (avand in vedere totusi, ca sunt niste agenti ultra secreti si profesionisti), si, precum am mai spus, intriga tensionanta indeajuns cat sa faca cititorul curios de ce se intampla mai departe. Exista un mic minus, dar nu il spun, altfel ar fi spoiler (e interpretabil, oricum), las cititorul sa traga concluziile. Eu recomand aceasta carte.

i mentioned i read this author years ago, this book was much better than animosity. i may re-read mercy and a cold something or other. he has a talent with adjectives. the first ones i read years ago actually made me feel like i was in houston, even though i'd only been to the airport. again, he's an adjective pro. and i don't normally read mystery/intrigue. but i very much enjoyed this book and will see if he has more after this publis date of 2003.

Very interesting premise, how does one proceed when asked to do something illegal that no one will ever know about, but that has severe consequences for your reputation and for the people closest to you. Luckily, the main character, Titus Cain, happens to remember someone who can help him out of his crazy predicament. There are some very gruesome killings and things get pretty intense for the characters as they deal with Luquin.

New twist for me on international intrigue. And kidnapping - Titus was not kinapped in the obvious way, but held for a huge ransom. He then went against all advice and hired an "underground agency" to help him.

The is a suspenseful, can't put down read. I have read other David Lindsey books, all of which are well written and surprising, this one is by back the most intriguing. I highly recommend to anyone that likes twists and turns in the suspense novels they read.

I wasn't sure I would finish this book after 50 pages. After that, I could not put it down. Great read.

Loved that it was set in Austin. Totally believable that this type of thing could happen. Didn't like the wife. She is late to the party but still wants to run the show.

Very good book. Read this in 2004.

Very much a page turner. I hope that the author has a very vivid imagination and this sort of thing is not really hugely prevalent in today's world.
