It's interesting that for both the original author and the mangaka, the nue arc is their favorite, and - according to the author's note - it's what shapes the series as a whole and lends its overall tone. Interesting because so far...the nue arc is my least favorite...
I get it, though. There's a brutality to this particular story that makes the beauty in it all the more surprising. Not a single person in that household was redeemable...well, other than the girl who got murdered by her own husband. Who is also the great love of her life, and someone by whose hand she was willing to perish, even though all the fault lay with his own horrifically abusive brother.
It's not romantic. It's not idealized. But it is somehow a stunning portrait of how broken people can come to care for each other. Which, yes, sort of summarizes this series.
I absolutely love how much more Shiroshi's fondness for Seiji shines through when you can see all his expressions. He very much treats Seiji as a beloved pet through this volume, including multiple instances of literally patting Seiji on the head...with some particularly adorable ones where the much taller Seiji has to bend down to let him.
Seiji, in the nue arc, also shows his value as the "assistant" no one but him seems to think he actually is. Beyond his supernatural power of being able to see the true forms of people's sins, he's a lot more perceptive than he seems to be. While Shiroshi and Odoro were bogged down in their assumptions about human selfishness and infidelity and jealousy, it was Seiji who saw the gentleness and love that unpacked all the more complex mysteries behind the two murders.
Odoro sneers at and scorns Shiroshi for caring about humans - and for being half-human himself - but as Seiji points out, that's actually a limitation that makes him weaker than Odoro. Shiroshi isn't half of two things, and therefore something incomplete...he's both, which makes him extraordinary.
I fully get why Shiroshi likes Seiji so much. He is an utter mess who is also a really kind, sensitive, good-hearted guy who's trying to do his best. With Shiroshi's help...and the removal of the massive debt hanging over his head...he might actually get there.
Very excited to see the rest of this story slowly come out in manga form, but first I need to get back to reading the novels! I do appreciate how clear it is that Todo was clearly a major fan of the story before adapting it. It really shows...and actually is succeeding at making me like Odoro a bit more, since that's Todo's favorite character, and he stands out a ton on the page as a result.
i truly can't get enough of this manga!! also this second mystery is >>>>>
"not once have i ever felt shame ashamed that human blood flowed through my veins. but i cant deny that i am neither human nor ayakashi. i can't do anything when slandered as an incomplete being."
"until recently, i thought the people who i saw as youkai were all like the serial killers in movies. that they were a completely different kind of entity from me. but...in reality, they were...just weak people. even if they committed a crime that would have them dropped into hell, even if they reaped what they sowed, each of them had been living their lives to the utmost. so even after they committed their crime, they were desperate to keep living."
Altro buon volume.
The second volume of manga finishes off everything that was in the first light novel. It was interesting and definitely worth continuing the series, but I think I want to go with the novels instead.
The Nue arc was completed and had a satisfying (if sad) payoff. It was interesting to see exactly how the competition plays out between the two 'Princes of Hell' and what happens if the incorrect judgement is passed. (Ouch, Rindou!) I guess the human parts of Shiroshi are a help to him after all. Then, we got a little peek into Seiji's history and Beniko tried (and failed) to tell a joke. She might be my favorite character.
So good! Sent chills down my spine! Love the art ant and the mystery! Kept me guessing! The characters are great. Lots of depth and interest to them. The competition between the two detectives to solve the case was great and ended surprisingly. I definitely can't wait for more of this series.
Boże… kocham tą serię… idealnie wyważa ilość tragizmu i humoru… końcówka Arc Nue bardzo mnie zabolała (w pożywnymi sposób). Flashback z perspektywy osoby, której nigdy nie poznaliśmy, ale non stop „was haunting the narrative” był idealnym posunięciem ze strony autora.
I am definitely intrigued by the story, this volume ends the story on a bitter sweet note, and it feels like if you've read to this point and discontinue the series, it is okay.
