A single mother and her son are stalked by a ghostly menace in Chicago. A monster, responsible for unspeakable acts, not limited to this world. Set in the aftermath of September 11th, the city of Chicago feels a sense of impending danger, fearing a similar tragedy could occur. A fast paced horror odyssey, which all begins on Halloween. Part of a series of interconnected horror novels that can be read in any order. Each book serves as a stand alone story, yet builds a greater picture behind a sinister mystery in Chicago.
You'll flip open your copy of Call of the Cradle, dim the lights, and brace yourself for a true horror experience whilst eagerly flicking through the pages. Unfortunately, the book plays out very much like Rugrats as the book focuses on Pete who is a very capable newborn.
There isn't an amazing twist and the wackiness of Call of the Crocodile and Call of the Arcade is nowhere to be seen. Conspiracies are briefly mentioned but it's a line of dialogue before moving on to something else.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed how innocent and fun the book was but it lacked the Gardner magic that Call of the Crocodile and Call of the Arcade were made of. The book very much focused on establishing a world where the characters from the Horror's Call coexist whilst not really doing a lot else. It's a shame because if you've read the other books then you'll already know this.
Call of the Cradle is probably the weakest in the series so far and although the book itself isn't bad, it's not that good when compared to previous entries.
One thing that I did enjoy, however, was a cameo from a certain someone.
One of the more hilarious books I've read purely because of the main protag being a fucking baby, and all of the shenanigans it gets into including but not limited to literally crawling through the dark needle-covered streets of Chicago.
