Gorąco polecamy państwu tę znakomitą książkę wspaniałe treści do pracy nad sobą, do refleksji, do medytacji i modlitwy.
Fulton John Sheen was an American bishop of the Catholic Church known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in Illinois, in 1919, Sheen quickly became a renowned theologian, earning the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosophy in 1923. He went on to teach theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and served as a parish priest before he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1951. He held this position until 1966 when he was made bishop of the Diocese of Rochester in New York. He resigned as bishop of Rochester in 1969 as his 75th birthday approached and was made archbishop of the titular see of Newport, Wales. For 20 years as "Father Sheen", later monsignor, he hosted the night-time radio program The Catholic Hour on NBC (1930–1950) before he moved to television and presented Life Is Worth Living (1952–1957). Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated The Fulton Sheen Program (1961–1968) with a format that was very similar to that of the earlier Life Is Worth Living show. For that work, Sheen twice won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality, and was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Starting in 2009, his shows were being re-broadcast on the EWTN and the Trinity Broadcasting Network's Church Channel cable networks. His contribution to televised preaching resulted in Sheen often being called one of the first televangelists. The cause for his canonization was officially opened in 2002. In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stating that he lived a life of "heroic virtues," a major step towards beatification, and he is now referred to as venerable. On July 5, 2019, Pope Francis approved a reputed miracle that occurred through the intercession of Sheen, clearing the way for his beatification. Sheen was scheduled to be beatified in Peoria on December 21, 2019, but his beatification was postponed after Bishop Salvatore Matano of Rochester expressed concern that Sheen's handling of a 1963 sexual misconduct case against a priest might be cited unfavorably in a forthcoming report from the New York Attorney General. The Diocese of Peoria countered that Sheen's handling of the case had already been "thoroughly examined" and "exonerated" and that Sheen had "never put children in harm's way".
I first read this beautiful book back in 2016. It contains 59 chapters originally published in 1955. I wanted to read it again, daily one chapter at a time. After my coffee in the morning, almost every day, I sat down to enjoy Bishop Sheen's wisdom and wit. I found this method to give me the courage to enjoy the day that followed. For example, just a couple of my favorite quotes follow:
"If a moral person sat down to decide the one secular profession he or she would approach with the greatest reluctance, because of the responsibility it involved, that profession would be the publishing of a newspaper." (Chapter 38) I found that I could apply that to TV news networks, radio talk shows, internet news, Twitter, and Facebook, some of which is probably fake news.
"How our outlook on the world would change if the makers of public opinion, instead of seeing the dark side of the evil alone, would see the bright side of the good; if they would single out politicians, businessmen, labor leaders, parents and others who mirror forth great virtues and moral integrity, then the evil of the world would be more quickly overcome." (Chapter 48)
I have come to realize reading this book that nothing has changed in 62 years.
Wonderful, beautiful book full of words of wisdom on how to live a life filled with inner peace and thus creating a world filled with peace. It is amazing how Sheen writes in 1949 describing the state of modern man and the world and how that world is virtually no different than the 21st century, only the bad has got worse and his predictions have prophetically come true. I started off underling quotes and phrases that impressed upon me but very shortly gave that up realizing I'd need to underline the whole text! My ancient copy is falling to pieces and held together with a rubber band but it is a keeper. A must read for all Christians.
This is on my top five favorite all-time spirituality books, and Sheen is now one of my top five favorite spirituality writers. I can't believe how powerfully and elegantly he writes. This is one of those books where you only read a little a night in order to fully absorb the incredible depth of the book. This is an absolute classic!
It is frequently commented that Bp. Sheen's assessment of the world and its direction is uncannily accurate and prescient. If this book came out three years ago (or three days ago) instead of 63 years ago, the reader would be hard-pressed to know it. It is common to think of the 1950's as an idyllic time, full of Ozzie's and Harriet's, but Sheen perceived the societal degradation already well under way. Only God knows what he would make of today's culture, but I suspect he would be very sad, but not very surprised as he foresaw the problems and trajectory.
Wonderfully insightful, the short chapters (about three pages each) make a wonderful daily snack to chew on. Eminently quotable, you will find many instances to highlight, jot down, or share his words of wisdom. Like all of his writing, I cannot recommend this volume too highly.
This was actually the second time that I had read Bishop Sheen's 'Way to Inner Peace.' This was one of those books that I read on a daily basis - 59 topics- one topic each day. The topics are the kinds that anyone would want to read: Selflessness; The Obtrusiveness of Evil; Patience; Humility; and 55 others. The reader may want to just continue reading. Or, as I did, the reader may want to read one topic per day for the best part of a year. THEN I read the book again. And honestly, I will probably read the book again at some point in the future.
Bishop Sheen's book is more than 70 years old, but his wisdom lives on and on.
The Way to Inner Peace by Fulton J. Sheen is a concise spiritual guide asserting that true contentment is achieved through internal moral and spiritual realignment, not external success. Its core message centers on combating the ego (pride and self-centeredness), which Sheen identifies as the main source of anxiety. He presents key themes like humility (honest self-assessment), active happiness (dispelling sadness by focusing on being loved by God), and virtue in daily life (faithfulness in small, mundane interactions) as the path to serenity. Though written in 1955, the book's critique of materialism and self-absorption makes it highly relevant to contemporary life.
Such wisdom, and so simple and easy to read. “The most intolerable punishment of the human soul is to live with itself and think of itself alone” “Despair is the last extreme if self love” “Friends are made by words, love is preserved in silence” “A fool’s voice is known by many words” “Pride is the child of ignorance, humility is the offspring of knowledge” “A love transforms work to such a degree that it almost ceases to be work where there is love” “Responsibility is the mark of freedom”
So glad someone suggested this tiny book for our Lenten book club. Sheen was way ahead of his time, writing theology for the common man and not just the super-elite educated. He speaks a language that is simple and readily available to us, in the same way CS Lewis did in the generation before him. Through a variety of different angles, Sheen makes the case that the true path to inner peace is an honest humility, a word so skewed by our popular culture, that most (including myself) have no idea what humility really is. But this must have been true in his generation too, because Sheen goes to great lengths to define it. Humility, true humility, is not caring what the world thinks about you, but only having an honest and true vision of yourself as you must appear beside the only comparison that matters: God. How do you stand up to God? Know that and you will be humble. Know humility and you will find inner peace. Thank you Fulton Sheen! Pray for me!
Nothing I can say adds to the excellence of this little book. Filled with so much wisdom, I have almost every page dog-eared. Originally published in 1955, it's as much needed today as it was then.
I didn't get all the way through this, but I thought it had great lessons. It's the kind of book to read a chapter every so often, reflect and try and work in your life!
Wisdom from Sheen on how to cultivate inner peace. I recommend reading one chapter daily over the course of a month or two. Good for devotion. Be sure to reflect on it.
